Heviz and the thermal lake

Heviz is a small town at the southwestern tip of Balaton, eight kilometers from Keszthely. Everything here is built around a single lake, which gave the resort its name. The lake is of volcanic origin, and its age has passed the thousand-year mark, and you should see it at least once.

Local legends about miraculous healings are tied to the lake. The water stays at a comfortable bathing temperature almost all year round, so the bathhouse welcomes guests in any weather. The chemical composition of the water and the peat bottom enhance the healing effect.

The water in the lake never stagnates. A light steam haze appears over the edge in late autumn, in the height of spring, and in hard frosts; locals call it "the lake is smoking." Indian lilies bloom above the water, brought here specially long ago. Heviz has long been known beyond Hungary, and people come here for treatment from all over Europe.

Indications for treatment

The resort's treatment profile is broad. According to the official Heviz website, the musculoskeletal system responds best to treatment here. The local waters help you recover during post-traumatic and post-operative periods.

The mineral springs are used for gastrointestinal conditions and metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and gout. Bathing in the thermal water relieves pain in the spine and muscles and has a toning effect. For some gynecological issues, such as cycle irregularities or adhesions, water-based treatment also helps. Bathing in thermal water is not for everyone. You should avoid treatment if you have open wounds, circulatory problems caused by heart failure, anemia, hemophilia, leukemia, or thrombosis until symptoms resolve.

Pregnant women need to be more careful: the water puts strain on the heart and circulation. Long water procedures in Heviz are also not recommended for children. Before your trip, discuss treatment with your doctor; the resort does not replace a specialist consultation.

Natural features of the lake

Heviz lies in a temperate climate zone, so it has warm summers, early springs, and mild winters. The climate plays a major role, but the healing effect comes from a combination of factors: water temperature, its chemical composition, and the air above the lake.

The lake is fed by three springs, all located in an underground cave. The water fully renews every 72 hours (as of 09/2026, Heviz website data), and the springs' flow rate reaches 410 liters per second (bathhouse operator).

The bottom is covered with a thick layer of therapeutic peat of plant origin. The water from the three springs gradually mixes in the cave, so the temperature stays nearly the same across the entire surface of the lake, and you will be comfortable bathing anywhere.

Healing properties of the lake

One of the main components of the thermal water, sulfur, is part of cartilage tissue. Cartilage sulfur deficiency is often the cause of osteoarthritis. During bathing, sulfur enters the body through the skin, but doctors advise also completing a drinking course.

Calcium and magnesium provide an anti-inflammatory effect and reduce pain. Carbonates work on the skin and give a cosmetic result. The lake surface emits hydrogen sulfide and radon vapors, so Heviz works like a large natural inhaler, and the dense forest around protects the bathhouse from the wind.
