The east of the island is warmer than the west. If you want the warmest possible water, look at Ayia Napa, Protaras, and Larnaca. Paphos and Limassol are cooler at the start of the month. But they tend to be less windy. Evenings in May are still cool, so a light jacket will come in handy.

You can swim in May, but with a caveat. At the start of the month the water stays around +20 °C, and the first dip is invigorating. By the third week of May the sea in the south warms up more, and even children get in the water. In the southeast, in Ayia Napa and Protaras, the water is on average warmer than in Paphos.

Most beaches are sandy, with a gentle slope into the sea. Equipped beaches have sun loungers, showers, and changing rooms, and you pay separately for a lounger and umbrella. Paphos is considered the birthplace of Aphrodite and suits a calm vacation. It's already warm here during the day, but the water may feel cool to people who like it warm. By the end of the month, the beaches get crowded.

Pissouri spreads out around Pissouri Bay, halfway between Limassol and Paphos. The village became a resort destination only recently. In May it's sunny here, but the sea is still cool.

On the coast below the hill there are just two uncrowded beaches with pebbles and sand. The clear azure water is good for diving. Catamaran trips and fishing help add variety to your vacation.
