West Bali National Park (Taman Nasional Bali Barat) was created in 1941 to protect the Bali myna and the wild banteng. Today it is the island's largest protected area and the only one with national park status (park establishment). The place is far from known to all tourists: people come here for birds, trekking, and the underwater world.

The park stretches along the northwest coast and includes the Prapat Agung peninsula with Menjangan Island. The area reaches about 190 km² on land, with another 34 km² of coastal waters with coral reefs (park data). The landscape changes over short distances: dry savanna, thorny scrub, tropical forest, mangroves, and coral flats.

Six villages are located in the interior of the park, belonging to the Jembrana and Buleleng regencies. Part of the territory is closed to visitors; tourists mainly have access to the coastal strip and the peninsula. This regime helps preserve populations of rare animals.

Permits and guides are arranged at two offices. One is in Cekik near the Gilimanuk port, the second in the village of Labuan Lalang near Pemuteran (park offices). Overnight stays and trading are prohibited within the territory, and you can only be on the trails during daylight hours.

Nature: birds, monkeys, and corals

The park's main celebrity, the Bali myna, lives only in the northwest of Bali. The snow-white bird with a crest and a black tail tip has long become a symbol of the island. The park's breeding center houses up to 300 individuals, and young birds are released into the wild after adaptation (Bali myna breeding center). Seeing them in the wild is easiest early in the morning.

In total, the park is home to about 160 bird species. In the forests you will hear kingfishers, sunbirds, and black eagles, and in the mangrove channels you will come across monitor lizards, snakes, and crocodiles (park birds). A small pair of binoculars will noticeably improve your walk: many birds perch high up and do not let you get close.

There are also plenty of mammals here: muntjac deer, leopard cats, giant squirrels, macaques, and rare black monkeys. Most of them are shy and hide in the thickets, so you are more likely to spot an animal at dawn than at midday.

Underwater, the picture is even richer. Coral gardens are inhabited by seahorses, turtles, and reef sharks, and in total there are more than a hundred coral species here. No wonder diving off Menjangan is considered some of the best on Bali.

The landscape is rounded out by the extinct volcanoes Patas and Merbuk, visible from open parts of the park in clear weather.

What to see in the park

Only part of the territory is open to tourists. All hiking is done only with a guide (visiting rules). There are no shops, cafes, or stalls on the trails, so bring your own water and food.

The easiest option, the Tegal Bunder trail, starts in the village of Sumber and takes about two hours. The guide will show you orchids and teach you to distinguish bird calls. The Gunung Klatakan route leads through tropical lowlands to Mount Klatakan, 690 m high (park routes), you do not climb to the top, the view opens from a viewpoint. The Teluk Terima trail follows the river into the Ulu mountain area and lasts about three hours; here you will encounter black monkeys.

Activities: diving and Menjangan Island

The main spot for divers, Menjangan Island, lies off the western tip of the peninsula. The name translates from Indonesian as "deer," and that is an accurate description: deer really do swim across the strait between the islands. You can walk around it on foot in about an hour (diving off Menjangan). A small Balinese temple, Pura Gili Kencana, remains on the island.

You reach the island by boat from the village of Labuan Lalang. First you get a visit permit, then you board the boat with a guide and gear. People dive here both with scuba gear and with a mask and snorkel.

Besides diving, boats also leave the park for Gilimanuk Bay and Teluk Bay. Such a trip takes a couple of hours and suits those who do not want to scuba dive. Bring water and sun protection: there is almost no shade on open water.

How to get to Bali Barat

The park lies far from the island's southern resorts. From Denpasar airport the drive takes about four hours along the western highway, so leave early in the morning (how to get there). The trip is convenient to combine with an overnight stay in Pemuteran rather than rushing there and back in a single day.

Ferries arrive in Gilimanuk from eastern Java, and from the port a minibus to Cekik takes about fifteen minutes. Menjangan Island is reached by boat from the village of Labuan Lalang, roughly forty minutes each way. From the north coast, a coastal road from Lovina and Pemuteran leads to the park.

There is no public transport inside the park, so most visitors come by car or scooter and hire a guide at the entrance. If you are traveling without a car, allow a full day for the journey.

The fastest route: by car along the western highway to Gilimanuk, then a short drive to Cekik. You can also take a bus to Gilimanuk or approach from the north coast via Lovina and Pemuteran. From the airport it is easiest to book a transfer or rent a car in advance.
