Genoa travel guide: transport, hotels, focaccia and main attractions

Read more →Genoa often ends up in a travel plan as a one-day stop. You are traveling through northern Italy, you look at the map and see a large port on the sea, right where the Riviera begins. Sometimes Genoa turns out to be a place to change trains or the start of a trip along the coast, and there is very little time left for the city. Then the practical questions come up: is one day enough, what should you see first, and do you need a guided tour? These are the questions people usually bring to this section.
There are not many articles in the section yet, and we say so plainly. The first is a one-day route through Genoa. It starts at the Aquarium and ends at Staglieno Cemetery. The route shows what order to walk in and how to divide your time so that the day does not turn into a rush. The text is meant for a self-guided walk, without a guide.
The second article is about guided tours. It is a selection of routes through the center of Genoa and along the Riviera, for those who would rather go with a guide than on their own. It shows which formats exist at all and how a city walk differs from a trip out to the coast. We describe what each route includes and who it suits, without superlatives. The selection helps you decide whether you need a tour or whether your own plan is enough.
We build every article the same way. It opens with a short summary: the main things you need to know before the trip. Practical blocks follow: the order of the stops, ways of getting around, and what makes sense to buy or check in advance. For every figure we give the source and the date it was checked, and we compare prices and opening hours with the official websites. We write about the downsides as calmly as about the upsides: where lines form, what is far from the center, what you can skip.
The section suits those who have already decided to go to Genoa and are planning a specific day or a short stop. It is also useful if you are choosing between a self-guided walk and a guided tour. If you are looking for a detailed breakdown of neighborhoods to stay in, hotel selections or articles on transportation, they are not here yet. For a long trip along the coast, the section will give you only a starting point for now. We do not want to promise more than there is.
We suggest starting with the one-day route. It gives you an overall picture of the city: what is close together and what you will need to ride to. After that, open the selection of tours and compare it with your own plan. That makes it easier to see which parts of the day you will cover yourself and where a guide will save time. If you have more than one day, the same route can be split into parts, with a trip to the Riviera added.
Genoa belongs to the "Italy" section, which is part of "Europe" within "Destinations". "Bologna", "Venice" and "Verona" sit on the same level. They are convenient to read together if you are putting together a trip through the north of the country with several cities. Look for general questions about the country in the "Italy" section. The other Italian cities we write about are gathered there too.
The section will grow. We do not announce in advance which topics will appear first, so as not to make promises with no article behind them. We reread and update the texts already published: we compare them with the official websites of museums, transport operators and city services. When the data changes, we correct the text and set a new check date.
Before your trip, still check opening hours and prices with the sights themselves: they change by season and on public holidays. Our job is simpler. We gather what you need to know in advance, in a clear order, so that once you are there you spend your time on the city and not on searching for information. For a short stop in Genoa, the articles already published are enough.
