Market at Cologne Cathedral

Cologne Cathedral with a Christmas tree

Roncalliplatz sits right at the foot of the cathedral, so the setting here is the most recognizable in the city. By visitor numbers, this is Cologne's largest market: around five million visitors per season (according to koeln.de). More than 140 stalls are set up on the square, and a glowing star canopy stretches over Roncalliplatz (as of: 09/2026, colognecathedral.de).

The location runs from November 16 to December 23, 2026. Hours: Sun-Wed 11-21, Thu-Fri 11-22, Sat 10-22. On November 22, Totensonntag, the market is closed. Entry is free, and free concerts take place on the stage in the evenings.

  • Who it's for: if you want to see the city's most festive scene in one evening.
  • Getting there: take the KVB metro to Dom/Hauptbahnhof, exit directly at the cathedral.
  • The catch: it gets very crowded on weekends, so go on a weekday morning.

Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt sits on the waterfront by the Schokoladenmuseum and opens earlier than the others, on November 13, 2026. The stalls are designed like sailboats, so the maritime theme comes through at every booth, and the promenade offers views of the Rhein and the city. This is the longest-running market in the center: it operates until January 3, 2027, Sun-Thu 11-21, Fri-Sat 11-22 (as of 09/2026, KölnTourismus). Admission is free.

The site is closed on December 24 and 25, and from December 26 it becomes Neujahrsmarkt. On November 15 the market opens only at 13:00, and on November 22 at 18:00.

  • How to get there: take the KVB metro to Severinstraße station, then it's about a 10-minute walk along the Rhein.

Markt der Engel at Neumarkt

Neumarkt is one metro stop from the cathedral. A continuous canopy of lights stretches across the entire market, and angel figures stand between the stalls. Compared with the square by the cathedral, it's noticeably calmer here, which is a plus if you don't like crowds. Markt der Engel runs from November 16 to December 23, 2026, Sun-Thu 11-21, Fri-Sat 11-22; it's closed on November 22, and on December 23 it closes at 21:00 (as of 09/2026, Köln-Interaktiv).

  • Who it's for: if you want a quiet stroll in the center without large crowds.
  • How to get there: take the KVB metro to Neumarkt station.

Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Altstadt

Heinzels Wintermärchen covers the largest area of all Cologne's markets and is split into two parts. Handwerkergasse operates on Alter Markt, where blacksmiths, woodcarvers, and bakers do their work in front of the public. The market's theme, Cologne's Heinzelmännchen, is woven into the stall designs. Alter Markt is open from November 23 to December 23, 2026, while Heumarkt, with its ice rink over 100 meters long, runs until January 10, 2027, daily 11-22 (as of 09/2026, organizer).

Admission to both areas is free; you only pay for ice skating. You can walk between Alter Markt and Heumarkt in a few minutes.

  • Who it's for: if you're traveling with kids or want to skate right in the city center.
  • How to get there: take the KVB metro to Heumarkt or Rathaus stations.
  • The catch: Alter Markt closes as early as December 23, so it's worth getting there before Christmas.

Nikolausdorf spreads out in front of Hahnentorburg on Rudolfplatz: small half-timbered houses, a stage, and a program for children. The market is open from November 16 to December 23, 2026, Sun-Thu 11-21, Fri-Sat 11-22, and is closed on November 22 (as of 09/2026, KölnTourismus). The Belgian Quarter starts nearby, so you can extend your walk through its streets and cafes.

  • How to get there: take the KVB metro to Rudolfplatz station.

Small markets in Cologne's neighborhoods

The central markets open in mid-November, while the neighborhood markets start later, some only in December. There are fewer tourists and more locals here, so mulled wine and food are usually cheaper. The organizer announces the dates and hours for each site.

The intimate market at Stadtgarten in the north of the center is aimed at neighbors and local regulars: long tables, local food, and music in the evenings. The organizer announces the exact dates for the 2026 season closer to December, so check the schedule before your visit.

The site at Chlodwigplatz in Südstadt runs from November 19 to December 23, 2026. It's one of the small markets in a densely populated neighborhood, where most visitors are residents of the surrounding streets.

Heavenue Cologne

Heavenue Cologne is open from November 16 to December 23, 2026. It's a Christmas market for the LGBT community with its own stage and program, held in the city center.

Santas Weihnachtsmarkt at MediaPark

Santa's Christmas market in Mediapark

Santas Weihnachtsmarkt im MediaPark runs from December 19 to 23, 2026. The venue is inside the media quarter, so it's convenient to stop by after work on a weekday evening.

Other markets in the districts

Besides these venues, other small markets operate in the districts during Advent. Schedules are published by district organizers, and some markets run for only a few days, so it's worth checking the dates in advance.

What else to see during Advent

Markets, concerts, and river cruises together make up the Advent program. Tickets for popular dates are worth buying in advance: in December, the best slots sell out weeks ahead.

Concerts and shows

During Advent, Cologne hosts Christmas concerts and shows, some of them at venues near the cathedral. The program for the 2026 season is published by ticket services and the tourist office, and the strongest dates usually fall on weekends.

KD runs a daytime Rhine cruise during Advent, the KD-Nachmittagsfahrt im Advent. From the water you get views of the embankment, the cathedral, and the markets. Schedules and prices depend on the specific cruise, so check them with the operator.

Gifts from Cologne

If you're looking for gifts, check out the stalls with handmade goods and Cologne souvenirs. Mugs and gingerbread are sold at every market, but for ceramics and textiles head to Handwerkergasse near Alter Markt. Markets in the region

If you have a car, there are Christmas markets outside the city at castles and estates. They're noticeably smaller than the Cologne ones, but they take place in historic courtyards and parks.

Markets at castles and fortresses in the area take place in inner courtyards and parks, often with craft rows and a knights' program. Dates vary by estate, so it's best to check the castle's website.

Around Cologne, markets operate in Bonn, Düsseldorf, and Aachen. They're easy to reach by train, so you can combine a visit with a weekend trip along the Rhine.

Practicalities: getting there, parking, accommodation

During Advent, central Cologne is busy, especially on weekends. It's better to leave your car at a Park-and-Ride and continue by metro, and a train from major cities will spare you the parking search entirely.

Parking with online availability

Parking garages operate in the center, and some of them show occupancy online. During Advent, spaces run out early, so check the data before you set off and allow extra time.

Getting around during Advent

The most convenient way to travel between markets is the KVB metro: the Dom/Hauptbahnhof, Neumarkt, and Rudolfplatz stops are connected by direct lines. From the cathedral to the Altstadt and Heumarkt, you can walk along the Rhine.

Where to stay

On Advent weekends, Cologne hotels see their biggest price spikes of the year. Accommodation near the cathedral and Neumarkt gets booked out several weeks in advance, so reserve early. You can compare options in the center here: Cologne hotels on Trip.com.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When do the Cologne Christmas markets open in 2026?

The Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt at the Schokoladenmuseum opens first, on November 13, 2026. The markets at the cathedral, on Neumarkt, and on Rudolfplatz start on November 16, while Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Altstadt starts only on November 23 (as of 09/2026, City of Cologne portal).

How long do the markets run?

Most locations close on December 23, 2026. The Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt runs the longest, until January 3, 2027, and the ice rink on Heumarkt until January 10, 2027. If you are visiting between Christmas and New Year, choose these two locations; the others are already closed.

How many Christmas markets are there in Cologne?

There are six large locations in the center: at the cathedral, on Neumarkt, on Rudolfplatz, and in Rheinauhafen. Heinzels Wintermärchen occupies two more: the market on Alter Markt and the ice rink on Heumarkt. Plus there are smaller markets in the neighborhoods, for example on Chlodwigplatz and in MediaPark. You can walk to all six central locations in one day.

Which market is the most beautiful?

It depends on what you prefer. The cathedral has the most striking decorations, Neumarkt has a glowing canopy of lights and fewer people, and Heinzels Wintermärchen offers an ice rink and Handwerkergasse with artisans. For families, Nikolausdorf on Rudolfplatz is the most convenient.

Are the markets open on Totensonntag?

No. On November 22, 2026, the markets at the cathedral, on Neumarkt, and on Rudolfplatz are closed. The Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt is open that day, but opens later than usual, only at 6:00 PM.

In short: what to book

If you have one day, start at the cathedral, walk to the Altstadt, and finish at the ice rink on Heumarkt. If you are traveling with children, choose Nikolausdorf, and for a quiet evening go to Neumarkt. Book accommodation in the center in advance, because prices peak on Advent weekends.
