Bolzano Christmas market 2026: dates, opening hours and what to try

The Christmas market in Bolzano opens on November 26, 2026 at 5:00 PM. That evening, the large Christmas tree is lit on Waltherplatz, and the market runs until January 6 (as of 09/2026, official market website).

This is Italy's first Christmas market, opened in 1991. The square and neighboring alleys host 112 wooden stalls, and up to a million visitors come during the season (as of 09/2026, Christkindlmarkt Bozen page).

We've put together the dates and opening hours, the menu, the children's program, and a short walking route from the train station. We also looked separately at when the square is quiet and when you'll find yourself in a dense crowd.

Dates and opening hours

💡 In short:

  • Opening on November 26, 2026 at 5:00 PM, the market itself runs from November 27, 2026 to January 6, 2027.
  • Every day from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, entry to the square is free.

The season starts on the Thursday before Advent. That evening, the tree is lit on the square, after which the market stays open until January 6, 2027 (as of 09/2026, calendar on the official page).

The regular schedule is simple: stalls operate every day from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Holidays change the hours, so check the table before your trip.

The holiday exceptions are worth remembering in advance. On December 24, trading ends at 4:00 PM, on December 25 the market is closed all day, on December 31 the stalls wrap up at 6:00 PM, and on January 1 opening is only at 11:00 AM (as of 09/2026, italien.news).

In the morning, the square has few people, and you have time to look over the stalls. After sunset, all the lights come on, and the market looks more festive, but the line for mulled wine gets longer.

Where the market takes place

The market occupies Waltherplatz, Bolzano's main square, right by the cathedral (Bozner Dom). Artisan stalls stretch from the cathedral along Eisackstraße to Kapuzinerpark, and next to the church a Christmas park with handmade goods is set up.

Part of the market extends onto Bahnhofstraße and into the old town's alleys (as of 09/2026, venue description on the market website). Each stall belongs to a specific family or workshop, and it shows in the goods.

A typical European market looks similar, but something else keeps you here: the wooden huts stand around the cathedral, and the Dolomites rise above the rooftops. The square is small, so walking around doesn't turn into a marathon.

Bring cash and comfortable shoes. The stone pavement on Eisackstraße gets slippery after rain, and the sidewalks in the alleys are narrow.

What to try and what to buy

The menu here is typically South Tyrolean. Start with Zelten, a fruit bread with nuts and spices baked for Christmas. Warm Apfelstrudel comes second, and for a hot dish go for Knödel or Schlutzkrapfen with a spinach filling.

Glühwein keeps you warm, and for a non-alcoholic option there's hot apple juice. Drinks are served in reusable cups that you return afterward: this is how the market maintains its certified Green Event status (as of 09/2026, Italian guide italien.news).

Visitors at the wooden stalls of the winter market

Products and artisan goods are brought in from South Tyrol. Short delivery distances are part of the Green Event rules the market follows. Thanks to the short journey, Zelten and cheese arrive at the stalls fresh (as of 09/2026, Green Event section).

What to buy as a gift: carved nativity figurines, glass Christmas ornaments, ceramics, felt slippers, and thick Loden wool fabric. There are few mass-produced souvenirs, so you are sure to find gifts with a story behind them.

Program: music and children

Music plays almost every day. Brass bands perform from the balconies of historic buildings, and school and church choirs perform closer to the evening. On weekends, Alpine ensembles with zither and accordion join in.

A narrow-gauge miniature train and a historic carousel run for children. On selected days there are puppet shows, storytelling, and workshops where children decorate Christmas baked goods.

The program is announced before opening, and the full schedule is posted on information boards near Waltherplatz (as of 09/2026, program overview at italien.news). Check the schedule for a specific day once you are there.

Artisans demonstrate their work right at the stall: a woodcarver assembles nativity figurines, a glassblower blows Christmas ornaments. It is worth stopping to watch if you are looking for a gift rather than just strolling around.

How to get there and where to park

The easiest way is to arrive by train. Bolzano's main station is in the center, and you can walk to Waltherplatz in a few minutes (as of 09/2026, official train page). Check train tickets to Bolzano in advance: in December, weekend trains fill up.

If you drive, follow the electronic guidance system. Signs on approach roads show available parking spaces in real time (as of 09/2026, christkindlmarkt.it).

There is little parking in the old town, so the organizers themselves recommend public transport. If you do arrive by car, leave it on the outskirts and walk into the center.

When to go without the crowds

Plan your visit for a weekday morning. At 10:00 the stalls are already open and the square is still uncrowded: you can take your time looking at the goods and talking with the artisans.

In the evening and on weekends, Waltherplatz gets packed, especially near the main Christmas tree and at the entrance from Bahnhofstraße. The catch: the crowd follows you into the narrow lanes of the old town, and walking around the market becomes uncomfortable.

If you are going to the opening on November 26, arrive early. The ceremony starts at 17:00 and draws a large crowd (as of 09/2026, article about dates at italien.news).

What to see nearby

Near Waltherplatz, in the courtyard of Palais Campofranco, they set up the "Magischer Winterwald": a small winter forest of spruce trees with string lights and individual huts. It is quieter here than on the square, and you can have a glass of wine without waiting in line.

Two more spots for a break: the META Restaurant & Skybar terrace with a view of the square and the cathedral, and the WaltherPark shopping center with shops and parking (as of 09/2026, Bolzano overview at italien.news). In December, the Mercatino solidale charity market operates on Kornplatz.

In short: what to book

If you have one evening, come to Waltherplatz after dark: the lights come on, music plays, and the market reveals itself fully. If you are traveling with kids, pick a weekday before lunch: the little train and carousel run with no lines, and you have time to see everything.

For weekends, book a hotel in the old town in advance: in December, rooms near the square sell out quickly (hotel prices in Bolzano on Trip.com). The train solves the parking issue in the center, and December tickets are best bought a couple of weeks ahead (train schedules and tickets to Bolzano).
