New Year's fireworks in Madeira: where to watch the show in Funchal

Midnight on December 31: the sky over Funchal explodes with light. For eight minutes, thousands of charges burst over the bay, and the island spends about a million euros on the show every year. This is Madeira's New Year's fireworks display, recognized in 2006 as the largest pyrotechnic show in the world (as of 09/2026, Visit Madeira).

The main thing here is not the scale, but the view. The bay of Funchal is enclosed by mountains, so the fireworks are visible from almost anywhere in the city. Charges are launched from dozens of sites around the bay, and the best spots should be claimed in advance.

We have not attended this celebration in person, so all figures and times were checked against official sources: the Visit Madeira tourist office and Funchal municipality announcements.

Funchal fireworks: scale, date and price

💡 In short:

  • The show starts at midnight on December 31 and lasts about eight minutes (as of 09/2026, Visit Madeira).
  • Charges are launched from 59 sites in Funchal Bay and on Porto Santo (as of 09/2026, Madeira Weekly).
  • You can watch for free: from the waterfront, from city viewpoints, or from a boat in the bay.
  • Prices and opening hours: 09/2026, verified on the official tourist office website.

Preparation for the show goes on all year. The island authorities approve the launch plan annually, and in 2026 it includes 59 points. Of these, 27 operate in Funchal Bay itself, 25 are positioned between the Cais 8 pier and Praia Almirante Reis beach, 5 are placed in open sea, and 2 are located on Porto Santo (as of 09/2026, Madeira Weekly).

The bursts sound especially powerful because of the terrain. The bay is enclosed by slopes, and the sound reflects off the mountains, so guests hear shots from all sides. This natural amphitheater is what made the Funchal fireworks famous.

The 2006 Guinness record was later beaten by other countries. Today, Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE is also trying to claim the title of the world's largest show. The light show over the bay still remains the island's calling card, and people travel here from all over Europe for it (as of 09/2026, Visit Madeira).

New Year's Eve program

The celebration starts long before midnight. The exact schedule is published by Visit Madeira shortly before the date, but the structure of the evening repeats year after year (as of 09/2026, Visit Madeira).

In past seasons, the day looked like this. At 11:00 on Avenida Arriaga, the folk group MonteVerde performed, and at 15:00 Borracheiros played at the same location. On the concert stage, Quarteto Pedro Marques started at 16:00, and the band 4Soul came on at 19:00. At Praça do Povo, Pedro Garcia Trio sang at 21:00, the street show Light Walkers ran at 21:45, the Tina Turner tribute Simple the Best started at 22:00, and DJ SIL performed at 00:20.

The climax begins twenty minutes before midnight. On the Funchal pier, a countdown is underway: numbers are projected onto the ground, lasers shoot into the sky, and the light forms dancing figures (as of 09/2026, Visit Madeira). At exactly 00:00, the volleys spread across the entire bay.

History: from bonfires to a record

The tradition of New Year's lights is older than the fireworks themselves. In the seventeenth century, Madeira residents burned bonfires to light up their homes and fill them with color. Later, in the eighteenth century, English families living on the island began launching large charges in honor of the New Year.

The tradition was revived by banker João José Rodrigues Leitão. Over time, wealthy island families began competing to launch rockets. That is how the show that is now considered Madeira's main tourist attraction was born.

Over the years, the celebration expanded beyond Funchal. Charges are now also launched on Porto Santo, and the show itself is broadcast live. For locals, it is also a reason to gather with the whole family on the waterfront.

Best viewpoints in Funchal

The best view is from the water and from above, but the city itself also has plenty of good spots. Below are the locations most often recommended to tourists and locals.

The Avenida do Mar waterfront remains the simplest option. Tourists and locals in festive outfits stand here side by side. In the city, good views open up near Parque de Santa Catarina, from Fortaleza do Pico above the bay, from the Miradouro da Quinta das Cruzes lookout, and from Monte, where the entire bay is visible in clear weather.

On a clear night, part of the show is visible from Garajau in the east and from the Cabo Girão Skywalk platform in the west. Keep in mind: these are distant viewpoints, and some of the volleys will be blocked by the slopes (as of 09/2026, Visit Madeira).

Arrive at your spot by seven in the evening. That way you can secure a good spot along the waterfront while the streets are still open and the city lights are just coming on. If you are driving, leave your car below the center and walk up: by midnight, access roads to the viewpoints are closed.

Fireworks from the water

The best view of the amphitheater is from the bay itself. On New Year's Eve, private yachts, catamarans, and sometimes even pirate ships anchor in the harbor, so spots on board are usually booked in advance.

From the water, you can see the entire arc of the bay at once. But remember: it gets chilly on the water at night, so bring a warm jacket, and it is best to head out an hour before midnight, before the boats block the marina entrance.

Christmas on Madeira

A trip to Madeira is worth it even without New Year's Eve. From the first of December, the squares, streets, and buildings of Funchal are dressed in festive lights: light tunnels glow above the city, and huge Christmas trees and nativity scenes are set up in the squares.

The mild climate makes the island pleasant even in the middle of winter. While Germany is stuck in gray weather, the slopes over the Atlantic stay green and tropical plants bloom in the city. Outside Funchal, evergreen forests and wild coastlines with marked hiking trails await you.

The lights are on every evening, only the routes and themes of the installations change. It is best to walk through them after sunset, when all levels of lights are switched on (as of 09/2026, Visit Madeira).

The city center is compact, so most of the decorations can be seen on foot. Even if you arrive without a car, you will see almost everything: the lights stretch from the waterfront to the squares, with cafes and concert stages in between.

Lights, fairs and opening hours

The festive program runs throughout December, and some fairs stay open into January. Exact hours are published by the Visit Madeira tourist office; below are the figures from the latest season (as of: 09/2026, Visit Madeira).

The Christmas market on Avenida Arriaga consists of small wooden stalls and offers regional products: local gastronomy, plants, fruit, Madeira wine and sugarcane honey. Here you can try traditional carnes vinha d'alhos sandwiches, poncha and island liqueurs.

The market is open almost every day, but it is closed on December 25 and January 1, and before New Year it keeps its doors open until four in the morning. Go on a weekday morning: by evening there is a line at the stalls.

Concerts run alongside the market. Philharmonic orchestras, folk groups and small ensembles perform on Avenida Arriaga from December 1 to January 9, and admission is free (as of: 09/2026, Visit Madeira).

What else to see during the holidays

The ethnographic village on Largo da Restauração showcases traditions, crafts, folklore and two nativity scenes made from natural materials. Nearby you can try the island wheat soup with bolo do caco flatbread.

For gifts, stop by the embroidery and crafts exhibition organized by the IVBAM institute. It sells handmade embroidery and artisan products, and during the holidays visitors are treated to Christmas sweets with Madeira wine.

Epiphany closes the season. On January 5 at seven in the evening, hymns are sung on Praça do Povo, and on January 6 the arrival of the Three Kings is celebrated. By tradition, the table features a Bolo-Rei cake with a bean and a small gift inside: whoever gets the bean buys the cake the following year (as of: 09/2026, Visit Madeira).

How to get to Madeira

Direct flights to Madeira operate from Germany. Lufthansa and Condor fly from Frankfurt, and the flight takes about four hours. If you also want to see Lisbon, book a TAP ticket with a stop in the Portuguese capital.

In winter, tickets from Germany usually cost a few hundred euros; check the carrier's website for the exact price. From Funchal airport to resort hotels, the most convenient option is a transfer.

The island has a good bus network, and you can reach most areas from Funchal. For flexibility, rent a car: Madeira's mountain roads are an attraction in themselves.

Where to stay on Madeira

On New Year's Eve, almost all Funchal hotels are booked well in advance, and prices in the center are higher than usual. If you want peace and quiet, look at options outside the city.

  • Fajã dos Padres: self-catering cottages in a garden beneath the cliffs, twenty minutes from central Funchal. Accessible only by cable car or boat. From 80 € per night with breakfast (as of: 09/2026, fajadospadres.com).
  • Quinta do Furão: a hotel on the north coast right above the cliff, with indoor and outdoor pools and a sauna. A double room with breakfast costs around 200 € (as of: 09/2026, quintadofurao.com).

Both options are away from the center, so for New Year's Eve it is more convenient to book accommodation in Funchal itself. See hotels in Funchal on Trip.com.

Where to eat in Funchal

  • Restaurant Santo Antonio: the restaurant is in Câmara de Lobos, not in Funchal itself. They make espetadas, meat skewers on a laurel branch, and serve fresh fish. Address: Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco 656, Câmara de Lobos (as of: 09/2026, restaurantesantoantonio.com).
  • Santiago Beach Bar: a cafe at the eastern edge of the bay, below Forte de São Tiago. From here you can watch Funchal's last fishermen mending their nets.
  • Restaurant Cidade Velha: a terrace overlooking the sea in the old town. It's not the cheapest option, but the food is first class. Address: Rua Portão de São Tiago 21 (as of: 09/2026, restaurantecidadevelha.com).
  • Design Center Nini Andrade Silva: a designer showroom with a restaurant and rooftop bar, built on a historic fortress. A good spot for sunset (as of: 09/2026, ninidesigncentre.com).
