Colombo airport: visa, customs and first overnight in Negombo

The plane touches down and you step out into tropical humidity. Bandaranaike International Airport (code CMB) sits in Katunayake, north of Colombo. It's bigger than it looks in photos: long corridors, several immigration counters, a dense crowd near the exit.

The first two hours determine how much you'll spend on day one. A taxi "from the street" at the exit costs noticeably more than the official one, and you still have to find an ATM in town. Here's the order: visa, customs, transfer, money, and your first night's stay.

Arrival: ETA and passport control

💡 In short:

  • Apply for your ETA online before departure: starting 05/25/2026, the tourist visa is free for 30 days for citizens of 40 countries (as of 09/2026, immigration service website).
  • Keep your visa confirmation, passport, and first night's address handy so you don't have to dig for them in line.
  • Visa and entry rules: 09/2026, verified on the official agency website.

Bandaranaike Airport handles almost all of the island's international traffic. Passport control moves quickly if your documents are ready in advance.

Be careful with browser searches. The top results are often intermediary sites: they charge money for a free visa and ask for extra documents. Apply for your ETA only on the eta.gov.lk domain, which is the official immigration service website.

In the arrivals hall, you'll be asked for the address of your first night, so save your booking in advance. If your flight arrives after midnight, add a late check-in note to your booking: the front desk may already be closed.

Duty free and customs: tobacco and limits

Duty free shops also operate in the arrivals area, but the selection is narrower than in departures. The main restriction concerns tobacco: foreign tobacco products cannot be brought in, so you won't find cigarettes in the arrivals duty free (as of 09/2026, traveler page of the Customs service).

Check duty-free limits before your flight: rules change, and you won't have time to look them up at the counter. Keep receipts for purchases in your carry-on, and bring alcohol and gifts within the limits.

Important: keep medications in your carry-on along with the prescription. This way you'll get through inspection faster if an officer asks to see the packaging.

Airport transfer: hotel, taxi, tuk-tuk

At the exit, taxi and tuk-tuk drivers will approach you. The difference between the official counter and a "street" offer is not in your favor: the counter has a fixed fare, while with a driver you're negotiating on the spot with no reference point.

The official taxi service is operated by Airport and Aviation Services, with counters in the arrivals hall and at the terminal exit. Tell the driver your hotel, ask to see the zone rate, and request a receipt. Keep it until you reach the hotel: the receipt will help you resolve a dispute at the counter if the price changes along the way.

Hotel shuttle. The calmest option for your first day. The driver waits for you with a sign, the car has air conditioning, and your luggage goes in the trunk. After a long flight, you don't have to haggle or search for a car.

  • Who it's for: you're arriving at night or visiting Asia for the first time.
  • The catch: more expensive than an official taxi for the same trip.

Tuk-tuk. Tuk-tuks don't enter the airport grounds; you'll need to find them outside the gates. A short ride to Negombo with a driver works out cheaper than a taxi. Don't ask the driver to "show you hotels": you'll pay the commission for your stay yourself, on top of the fare.

Private shuttles. Online services with fixed prices charge noticeably more than a hotel or official taxi for the same trip. If you find such a rate, compare it with the airport counter rate.

Train and bus to Colombo

The cheapest way to leave the airport: a shuttle bus to Colombo Central Bus Station. From the bus station, you can catch a service to your destination city or walk ten minutes to Colombo Fort Railway Station and switch to a train.

Buses on the island drive fast and unpredictably, so long-distance trips are better planned by rail. Trains are slower, but the schedule is more predictable and a ticket costs less than a taxi. Check train and bus schedules on Trip.com.

For Negombo, you don't need a transfer in Colombo: for a short distance, take a tuk-tuk or a pre-booked transfer, and you'll get straight to your hotel.

Car rental: when you don't need it

Rental desks are right in the terminal: from Sixt and Europcar to cheaper local companies. We don't recommend getting a car on your first trip. In Sri Lanka, traffic drives on the left, and renting with a driver is inexpensive, so your own car adds hassle rather than freedom.

If you do rent a car, compare offers in advance: compare car rental prices. Confirm your license, insurance, and deposit with the rental company when booking, not at the pickup counter.

Money and connectivity: where to withdraw rupees

Withdraw rupees at the airport. Major cities have ATMs, but you shouldn't spend your first day looking for them. On a route into the hills, the nearest ATM may be an hour away.

In practice, this means: withdraw enough for the first few days of your trip, and keep small bills for tuk-tuks. Split large notes into different pockets so you don't pull out all your cash at the market.

Sort out connectivity in advance: an eSIM (find one) activates right after landing, without hunting for a phone shop at the airport.

First stop: Negombo instead of Colombo

Colombo is big and not cheap, and after a long flight you want the ocean, not traffic jams. For a short trip, it's easier to leave the city for the end. Negombo is 10 km from the airport (on the map), and you'll see the sea before your first night.

The town grew up around a lagoon and a fishing harbor, so it has a relaxed pace and plenty of guesthouses near the water. You can walk along the lagoon without a guide or a ticket, and it will fill your whole evening.

At the fish market by the lagoon, vendors sell the catch from local boats. Go there in the morning, while the stalls are full and the fish is on ice.

The Dutch Canal (Hamilton Canal) runs through Negombo, connecting the town to the lagoon. Quiet streets line the canal, a pleasant walk after a flight.

Negombo has hotels and hostels for every budget: Negombo hotels on Trip.com.

  • Who it's for: you arrive in the evening and want to see the ocean on day one.
  • Not for: you want the southern coast beaches right after landing.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka in 2026?

Yes, a tourist ETA is mandatory. Apply for it before departure only on the official website eta.gov.lk.

How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Negombo?

The official airport taxi operates on a fixed zone fare; the rate will be shown to you at the counter in the arrivals hall. A tuk-tuk outside the gates costs less than a taxi, and a hotel shuttle costs more. Compare the hotel rate with the counter rate before leaving the terminal.

Can I buy cigarettes in duty free on arrival?

No, importing foreign tobacco products is prohibited. Check the list of prohibited items in advance on the Sri Lanka Customs service page.

Where can I withdraw money right after landing?

In the arrivals hall of Bandaranaike Airport. Withdraw enough for the first few days of your trip.

Should I go to Colombo on the first day?

For a short trip, no. Negombo is closer and gives you the ocean right away. Colombo is better left for the last day before your flight.

In short: what to book

The order after landing is simple: visa online, money at the airport, first night in Negombo. If you arrive at night, there's one calm option: a hotel shuttle, because the driver waits for you at the exit with a sign. If budget matters more than comfort, take a tuk-tuk outside the airport gates: to Negombo it's cheaper than a taxi. Renting a car for the whole route only makes sense if you're traveling the entire island.

For your first night, it's more convenient to choose a hotel near the beach: see options for your first night.
