Barone Fortress was built in 1646 to protect Šibenik from the Ottoman fleet. The project was commissioned by German baron Christoph Martin von Degenfeld, whose name it still bears. The 1.38 million euro reconstruction was supported by the European Union (as of 09/2026, Wikipedia).

How to get to the fortress
Fortress address: Put Vuka Mandušića 28, one entrance, on the northwest side (as of 09/2026, visit plan). From the Šibenik waterfront, it is about a 15-minute walk uphill (per the map).
There is parking for about 40 cars near the fortress, but large buses cannot get there. For guests with reduced mobility, there is a ramp on the east side, and the augmented reality points are accessible on all levels.

When to visit
There is almost no shade inside, so in summer it is better to come in the afternoon or closer to sunset. The sunset over the archipelago is another reason to stay until evening.
In the warm season, the fortress turns into a concert venue. It hosts the Barone Jazz Festival, and the Barone Summer Cinema shows films under the open sky. The cafe with a view of the city is open the entire time the fortress is open.
