Direct train Hamburg-Copenhagen: 2026 timetable and ticket tips
Hamburg and Copenhagen are connected by direct trains with no changes. Daytime services take between four and a half and five hours, and ten such trains leave Hamburg Hbf each day (as of 09/2026, DB connection search). You board in the morning and by lunchtime you are already walking along the Nyhavn waterfront.
The route runs through Schleswig-Holstein, across the Rendsburger Hochbrücke over the Kiel Canal, and then through the Danish islands. From the window you see water, bridges and long fields, and for a weekend trip or a starting point into Scandinavia this is one of the most convenient international lines out of Germany.
From June 14, 2026, Railjet trains from Prague via Dresden and Berlin also began running on the line. There are now more direct options, and no need to change in Berlin. Below are the timetable, a description of the rolling stock and what you should do when buying a ticket.

Explore the city on foot: distances in the center are short, and the metro and S-tog cover everything else.
The main stops for day one: Nyhavn with its colorful houses, Tivoli Gardens and the design quarters along the harbor. A Tivoli ticket is bought separately from the rides, check prices on the park's website, and on day two take in the museums and a walk along the waterfront.

If you are traveling with a suitcase, stay near the station, in the København H area, Vesterbro or on Bernstorffsgade. There you have a short walk to the train, good connections to public transport and plenty of restaurants around.

🛤 The Hamburg-Copenhagen route
The Puttgarden-Rødby ferry (Vogelfluglinie) still operates, but since 2019 it has not carried trains. So today the train goes overland: via Schleswig, Padborg, Kolding, Odense and Ringsted. The journey takes from four and a half to five hours depending on the service (as of 09/2026, DB timetable).
During the day, direct trains leave Hamburg Hbf frequently, and from June 2026 Railjet trains from Prague were added. The train passes the Danish island chain, and you see water or fields almost the whole time: the panoramic section begins right after Rendsburg.

Route map
Between stops the train crosses bridges over straits, so the view from the window never repeats, and returning the same way won't feel boring.

📝 Booking and travel tips
Sparpreis seats on international services are limited, so the price rises closer to the date. Buy your ticket in advance: you pay less, choose a convenient time and lower the cost of your trip.
Special fare conditions apply for children, dogs or bicycles, so check them before paying.
If you're coming from another city, book your ticket to Hamburg in the same order as the main ticket: that gives you better protection for connections and passenger rights. From Copenhagen it's easy to continue: across the Øresund Bridge to Malmö and Gothenburg, from there to Oslo, and within Denmark to Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
How long is the direct train from Hamburg to Copenhagen?
Between four and a half and five hours depending on the service (as of 09/2026, DB). The fastest train in the table takes 4:30, while the night service takes noticeably longer. You don't need a transfer on any of these trains; you get off right in the city center.
Do I need to reserve a seat?
Formally a seat reservation is not required, but on weekends, holidays and during school breaks we recommend booking one (as of 09/2026, DB service search). That way you sit together and don't have to look for a free seat in the aisle. Buy the ticket and reservation in one order, it's easier to change the service that way.
Can I bring a bicycle?
Yes, but bicycle spaces are limited and a reservation is almost always required. Check this before buying your ticket: on some services bicycles are not accepted. The new trains have dedicated luggage areas and accessible zones with low-floor entry.
How do I get from the station to my hotel?
København H station is in the center; you can walk to Nyhavn and Tivoli, and the metro and S-tog go to neighborhoods farther out.
What to see in Copenhagen over a weekend?
Day one: Nyhavn and a harbor walk. Day two: Tivoli and the design museums. The city is compact, so you don't need a car.
In short: what to book
If you're going to Copenhagen for the weekend, take a morning direct train and a hotel near the station. Daytime services take under five hours, and no transfer is needed. For Scandinavia, Copenhagen works well as a first stop: trains leave from there to Sweden and Norway.
