Douro Valley in autumn: quintas, tastings and river walks

Douro Valley in autumn: quintas, tastings and river walks

The Douro Valley starts an hour and a half from Porto. Locals describe the climate here without sugarcoating it: cold and damp in winter, unbearably hot in summer. That's why the best months to visit are September and October.

This is when the grape harvest takes place in the valley. The slopes above the river change color from green to rust. Ahead are tastings at the quintas, dinner in Régua, a boat trip from Pinhão, and the honest catches of each place. You'll see where you need to book in advance and where you can just show up without a reservation.

When to go to the Douro Valley

💡 In short:

  • Best time to visit: September and October, when the grape harvest is underway and the slopes change color.
  • The drive from Porto takes about an hour and a half, most convenient in a rental car.
  • Book tastings and cellar tours in advance: some quintas only accept visitors by appointment.
  • Prices and opening hours: 09/2026, verified on the official Quinta do Vallado website.
River and terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley

In September, some estates let you take part in grape treading in stone basins (lagares). The grapes are crushed by bare feet for several hours. Some winemakers still prepare a small share of the harvest this way, so ask about participating when you book.

By late October, the vineyards and cellars get quieter. Winemakers again have time to talk during their lunch break, and you can tour the estate without rushing. If you want to guarantee a spot on a cellar tour, sign up in advance or book a tour.

The road along the Douro and boat trips

The most beautiful stretch of the valley lies between Régua and Pinhão. The road runs right along the river, and the tight turns above the water are best left for the return trip after lunch. The road here is narrow.

Boats leave from the pier in Pinhão several times a day. A Douro boat trip takes about two hours and includes a wine tasting (as of 09/2026, Cruzeiros Douro). From the town you continue on to the quintas.

Quinta de la Rosa: views and a small wine shop

Quinta de la Rosa sits on the same right bank as Pinhão, so you don't need to cross the bridge. It has a few guest rooms, a small wine shop, and the Cozinha da Clara restaurant. The view of the Douro is already good from here, and it gets even better further up the river.

Quinta do Crasto: a pool above the valley

Further past Gouvinhas, on a hill, sits Quinta do Crasto. The pool at the edge of the slope overlooks the entire valley, and that view alone is worth staying here overnight.

  • The catch: available rooms are confirmed only by prior request, they don't expect walk-in guests here.

Quinta Nova: restaurant open to everyone

If you had no luck at Quinta do Crasto, drive on to Quinta Nova. The setting here is just as impressive, and the restaurant also serves guests who are not staying at the hotel, so you can come just for dinner.

  • Who it's for: dinner with a Douro view without booking a room.

Quinta do Vallado: architecture and wine tourism

If you are interested in architecture, Quinta do Vallado deserves a separate stop. You can stay overnight in the old guest wing or in the new slate building designed by Francisco Vieira de Campos. Either way, you need to book in advance.

Guests, however, get the full program: jeep, boat and bike trips, fishing, cooking classes, picnics and private tours. For everyone else, a cellar tour with tasting runs twice a day (as of 09/2026, official website).

  • The catch: the restaurant does not accept outside guests, dinner is available only to hotel guests.

Castas e Pratos: dinner in Regua

For dinner in Regua, the best choice is Castas e Pratos near the train station: the cuisine is modern, and the wine list features only Portuguese wines. The selection is extensive, so take your time.

The kitchen is open from 12:30 to 14:45 and from 19:00 to 22:00, seven days a week (as of 09/2026, restaurant). If you arrive early, wait in the wine bar on the ground floor.

  • The catch: the place is closed between lunch and dinner.

Quinta da Pacheca: a night among the vineyards

Cross to the left bank, toward Lamego: turn right just after the bridge, and a few kilometers later a plane tree avenue begins on the left, leading to Quinta da Pacheca. The guest rooms are well situated, and the restaurant offers a view of the Douro.

The food, wine and service here are beyond reproach, and wine tourists are welcomed without a reservation. You can stop by for a tasting on the way, even if you have not booked a room.

  • Who it's for: an overnight stay at a quinta and dinner with a river view without booking.

How to get there from Porto

There are inexpensive direct flights to Porto from German airports. In central Porto you can walk everywhere, and you will drive to the Douro Valley: the trip takes about an hour and a half. It is most convenient to pick up the car right at the airport, where you can also compare car rental options in Porto.

Where to stay in the Douro Valley

The quintas have few rooms, so book your accommodation well in advance. If the estates are fully booked, look at hotels in Regua and Pinhao: hotels in the Douro Valley on Trip.com.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit the Douro Valley?

September and October are considered the best months. The grape harvest is underway, the heat has eased, and the slopes above the river are covered in autumn colors. In September, some estates are still pressing grapes, and by late October things get quieter. In winter it's damp and cold here, and the summer heat isn't great for walking through the vineyards.

Do you need a car in the Douro Valley?

The quintas are scattered along both banks, so seeing them without a car is inconvenient. You can get from Porto to Régua and Pinhão without one, but once you're there you'll lose a lot of time getting around.

How do you take part in grape pressing?

Pressing happens in September, when the harvest comes in. Not every quinta lets guests into the lagares, so ask when booking and confirm the dates. At some estates, pressing takes place only on specific days and depends on the weather.

Do you need to book tastings in advance?

Some quintas accept visitors by appointment only. At Quinta do Vallado, the cellar tour with tasting runs twice a day. Quinta da Pacheca welcomes wine tourists without a reservation, but in season it's better to call ahead.

Where should you have dinner in the Douro Valley?

In Régua, it's Castas e Pratos next to the station. The Quinta Nova restaurant is also open to those not staying at the hotel. The restaurant at Quinta da Pacheca has a view of the river, and they take walk-in guests here.

In short: what's worth booking

If you're going for the weekend, stay at Quinta da Pacheca and have dinner there with a view of the Douro. If architecture and a full program matter to you, book Quinta do Vallado. If you only need dinner, head to Castas e Pratos in Régua. For grape pressing, come in September and ask about taking part in advance.
