When to buy a plane ticket abroad: timing and cheap days in 2026
The price of an international ticket depends on the date more than on the airline. The same route costs differently in July and in October, and the difference is measured in hundreds of euros. Part of that difference is within your control.
According to ADAC's analysis, international tickets departing from Germany and bought on Sunday cost on average 20% less than those bought on Thursday or Friday (ADAC data, published 02.10.2023). The analysis was based on bookings from January through August, as well as ARC and OAG databases.
Below are booking windows by region, cheap and expensive months, and the usual advice that makes you pay more.

Booking windows: what drives the price
💡 In short:
- The booking window depends on the region: windows by destination are given in the table below.
- Tuesday and Wednesday are usually cheaper than weekends, but the difference varies from season to season.
- Low season saves you a third or more, and holidays always get more expensive.
- Windows and seasonality: 15.09.2026, verified against ADAC's analysis.
Incognito mode and deleting cookies do not change the price. Booking services look at demand and remaining seats, not at your browser history.
The second common mistake is the "right day to buy." The Sunday advantage in ADAC's analysis is an average and is not guaranteed on every route. The difference between departure days is more reliable: shift your flight to midweek, and savings appear more often because fewer business passengers fly on those days.
© PierreSelim · CC BY-SAPhoto: PierreSelim, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia CommonsA separate finding from the same analysis: departures after 3:00 PM are canceled about twice as often as morning ones (ADAC results, 02.10.2023). If you have a meeting or a short connection on arrival day, take a morning flight.
Consumer protection centers warn that prices for flights, hotels, and cars are not stable (Verbraucherzentrale, verified 15.09.2026). Airlines manage revenue dynamically, so the same date costs differently on different days.
Major airline sales happen all year round, but you should not rely on them alone. Sale dates are not published in advance. Plan your baseline option using the windows in the table below, and treat a sale as a bonus.
Compare two or three date options within a week. Often the savings from shifting the date are greater than the savings from switching airlines.
The ranges below give you a planning reference, not a guarantee. During school holidays and in high season, prices go beyond any range.
Region | Booking window | Cheap month | Expensive month |
|---|---|---|---|
Canada | from three weeks to five months | October | July |
Mexico | from two weeks to six months | September | August and December |
Caribbean | from one month to eleven months | January, September, October | December |
South America | from five weeks to eleven months | September, October, February | December |
South Pacific | from one month to eight months | January, April, May | November and December |
Asia | from one month to seven months | January and November | June |
Europe | from five to eight months | October through March | May, June, July |
Middle East | from three to six months | October, November, February | December |
Africa | from three to six months | October, November, February | December |
Canada: cheapest in the fall
Between Europe and Canada, tickets get cheaper in spring and fall. In summer and during the Christmas weeks, prices rise: demand grows on both sides of the Atlantic.

For a single trip, the difference is more modest, and changing plans for it is not always sensible.
- Booking window: from three weeks to five months before departure
- Cheap month: October
- Expensive month: July
Set your dates for Tuesday and Wednesday and check both directions, outbound and return. The savings from moving the date are more noticeable on a family trip: every percentage point of discount multiplies by the number of tickets.
Mexico: tickets get cheaper in September
Prices for flights to Mexico stay steady all year. A slight drop happens in September, January, and February, and flying is most expensive in August and before Christmas.
© Daniel Schwen · CC BY-SAPhoto: Daniel Schwen, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsIf you want to spend New Year's on the coast, book about six months ahead: in December there are few seats left and the price stays high.
- Booking window: from two weeks to six months
- Cheap month: September
- Expensive month: August and December
Carriers regularly run sales on Mexican routes, so price alerts will come in handy. If you are flying in December, a six-month window is not overkill: by November there are almost no cheap fares left for holiday dates.
Caribbean: flexible dates and low season
The Caribbean forgives almost any dates if you are not tied to holidays. Good options appear all year round, and the most expensive month here is December.

For Christmas, book about five months ahead. In summer, one to two months is enough, and you will still catch a price drop.
- Booking window: from one month to eleven months
- Cheap month: January, September, October
- Expensive month: December
If you are willing to fly in the rainy season, the savings become noticeable. Good options appear in almost every month, so do not lock yourself into one date.
South America: shoulder season saves money
Flying to South and Central America is more expensive in summer and in December, especially around the holidays. The lowest prices for long-haul flights come in September, October, and February.

- Booking window: from five weeks to eleven months
- Cheap month: September, October, February
- Expensive month: December
Tickets to this region often show up in sales, so check alerts once a week. Compare two departure cities: from a neighboring airport a long-haul flight is sometimes tens of euros cheaper.
South Pacific: book early
Flights to Polynesia and the Pacific islands are expensive almost always. There are few direct flights, and most often the trip involves a layover in the US or in Asia.

- Booking window: from one month to eight months
- Cheap month: January, April, May
- Expensive month: November and December
Set up a price alert, and you will not miss a rare drop.
Asia: January and November are cheaper
Tickets to Asia are usually expensive, but sales do happen. At least one month ahead, ideally three to five months before departure.

- Booking window: from one month to seven months
- Cheap month: January and November
- Expensive month: June
Set price alerts: without them, you risk noticing a drop too late. Some sales cover dates in the next season, so check the exchange and refund terms in advance.
Europe: fall versus the summer peak
Summer is the most expensive season for flights to Europe. High season starts as early as May and ends in August, and prices in those months stay at their maximum.

- Booking window: from five to eight months
- Cheap month: October through March
- Expensive month: May, June, July
Flights to Europe operate all year round, so you will find good prices even in the final weeks. Compare departures from two or three nearby airports: sometimes the difference in travel time is smaller than the savings. If you are tied to school holidays, book as soon as sales open for your dates.
Middle East: three months before departure
For flights to the Middle East, the working window is three to six months before the trip. Demand is higher in winter and summer, and you have more freedom in spring and fall.

- Booking window: from three to six months
- Cheap month: October, November, February
- Expensive month: December
Check direct flights and options with a layover in Istanbul or Dubai.
Africa: book earlier than everyone else
Tickets to Africa are expensive almost all year, so it is worth booking as early as possible.

- Booking window: from three to six months
- Cheap month: October, November, February
- Expensive month: December
If you are flying on safari, match your dates to the season and check flight loads in advance. October, November, and February are usually the calmest months, and prices are lower then.
⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
How many months ahead should you buy an international ticket?
There is no single answer: the booking window depends on the region. In low season you can manage with one to two months, and for holiday dates book six months ahead or earlier. Much depends on the destination: there are many flights to Europe and few to the Pacific islands. Check the window for your region in the table above.
Are Tuesday and Wednesday really cheap days to fly?
Often yes, but the rule is not universal. Different studies give different answers: some find midweek cheaper, others Friday. It is more reliable to open the price calendar for your route and compare neighboring dates. That way you see the real picture for your airport.
Does incognito mode help lower the price?
No. Booking services rely on demand, remaining seats, and fare rules. Your browser history is not part of the calculation. Savings come from flexible dates, early booking, and price drop alerts. You can verify this in one evening on your own route.
Is it worth waiting for a last-minute sale?
Usually not. In the final weeks before departure, prices tend to rise: cheap fares are already sold out. Waiting makes sense in low season and on routes with a large number of flights. If your dates are fixed, buy early and do not count on a miracle.
How do you track ticket prices?
Set up an alert for your dates and check your email once a week. Keep two or three backup options for dates and departure airports. The price calendar in Google Flights shows how the cost changes by day. If a price fits your budget, buy immediately.
In short: what is worth booking
Shifting to midweek and buying within the window from the table covers most of the overpayment. After that, everything depends on the destination.
- If your vacation dates are fixed: book six months ahead.
- If your dates are flexible: look at Tuesday, Wednesday, and low season.
- If there is only one route: compare neighboring departure airports.
