Golden autumn in Latvia: where to go in October 2026
Autumn colors in Latvia last only three to four weeks. Forests, parks, and bogs flare yellow and red during this time. A route planned in advance helps you catch the peak without rushing.
We have gathered Latvia's strongest autumn spots by region: trails in Gauja National Park, the Ķemeri bog, the Venta Rapid in Kuldīga, harvest fairs, spas, and glamping. For each spot you will find a ticket, travel time, or a practical tip. Where numbers change every season, there is a link to the official source.

When to go for golden autumn
💡 In short:
- The season shifts by a week or two every year, so keep backup dates.
- Bring waterproof shoes and a warm layer: mornings on the trails are cold, and rain is common during the day.
- Season dates: late September to mid-to-late October (as of 09/2026, Latvian tourism office).
The peak of golden autumn in Latvia falls in the first two weeks of October. During this time, maples, oaks, and beeches in Gauja and Latgale blaze orange and red, and bogs sit in fog in the morning. Daytime temperatures reach 12-14 degrees, and it gets noticeably colder and rainier toward the end of October.
The season is short, so do not put off your trip until November. One stormy week strips half the leaves from the trees. If you are going for landscapes, take the first half of the month and leave yourself one spare week.
Before heading out, check the regional tourist information center's website. Municipalities launch seasonal routes and orienteering games on the trails in autumn. This is a free way to see places that do not make it into standard guides.
Gauja National Park and Sigulda
When golden foliage arrives in the Gauja valley, the slopes above the river turn orange. The trails around Sigulda are covered with fallen leaves, and autumn is visible at every step here. Thousands of people come to Sigulda in October, so buy tickets for morning trains in advance.

The core of the route is the Turaida Museum Reserve: a castle on a hill, a Lutheran church, and Dainu kalns hill nearby. From the tower's observation deck you can see the entire Gauja valley in autumn colors. Entry is paid; check current prices and opening hours on the museum's official website (as of 09/2026).

The path goes past the Krimulda Manor and Gutmanis Cave. The trail gets slippery in the rain, so bring trekking shoes. On the way back you can return along the other bank and come out at the cable car.
Cable car over the Gauja
The Sigulda-Krimulda cable car carries a cabin across the Gauja valley. In a few minutes you rise above the multicolored treetops and see the whole river. The cabin is small, and there can be a queue in high season. Come at opening time, and the ride will take 15 minutes with no waiting.

The suburban train from Riga takes just under an hour; check the train schedule and tickets the day before. Traveling on your own saves time and frees you from parking at the reserve entrance.
Tērvete Nature Park
The pine and oak forests around Tērvete turn into a golden kingdom in autumn. The trails lead through the Fairy Tale Forest with wooden sculptures and a miniature village. For families, this is one of the most convenient autumn parks in Latvia: the routes are short and the signs are clear.

From the hill, the autumn colors are visible for many kilometers around. The park is open year-round, entry to the grounds is free, and some sculptures and attractions are paid. From Riga to Tērvete is about 80 km on the map; it is easier to go by car or by bus to Dobele.
Ķemeri Great Bog
In autumn, the Ķemeri Great Bog becomes a place of amber moss and lakes among the mire. Early in the morning, fog spreads over the bog, and the calls of cranes can be heard. A wooden boardwalk and viewing platforms let you walk through the bog with dry feet and safely watch birds before they migrate.

From there you can see the whole mire from above, and a leisurely walk takes about two hours. The best time for photos is the first hour after sunrise. You can get there by train to Ķemeri station and then on foot; check the exact schedule on the Vivi train timetable.
Abava Valley and Kuldīga
The Abava Valley is called Latvia's Switzerland because of its hills. In autumn, people come here to see the vineyards, waterfalls, and caves of the Abava and Imula rivers. The small towns of Sabile and Kandava, surrounded by golden foliage, look like film sets. If you are coming for landscapes and wine, plan half a day for the valley.

The Venta embankment glows framed by golden leaves. Europe's widest waterfall, Ventas Rumba, is especially beautiful in autumn: about 249 m wide and 1.8-2 m high (as of 09/2026, Kuldīga tourist office).
A walk across the old bridge and along Ventas Rumba takes an hour. Afterward, stop at a café on the square for hot tea. From Riga to Kuldīga is about 150 km on the map; there is no train there, so you can get there by bus or car.
Lake Engure and the Vidzeme coast
At Lake Engure in autumn, wild horses and cows graze. Waterfowl gather above the water before flying south. In the evening, pink sunsets are visible from the shore, when the sky and water merge in color. This is a quiet place for a slow walk without crowds.

In autumn there are waves and storms, and the sight is truly powerful. After the walk, you can warm up with cocoa at the nearest tavern. The drive from Riga takes several hours, so plan an overnight stay in Kurzeme.
The Vidzeme coast is a separate route. The rocky shore with hundreds of boulders will take you half a day. The gray-blue water and multicolored trees nearby, the wind and the sound of the waves quickly push city thoughts out of your head. Walk along the shore slowly; the rocks are slippery after rain.
Rāzna national park and Latgale
Autumn in Latgale is special. Rāzna National Park showcases the natural and cultural riches of the lake region: when the trees light up, the landscapes become especially beautiful. The shores of Lake Rāzna, Mākoņkalns hill, and the islets of Lake Ežezers offer autumn calm without queues.
© Karlis Ustups · CC BY-SAPhoto: Karlis Ustups, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsIt is also worth visiting the Pilskalnes Siguldiņa nature reserve. The trails run through ravines and forests carved by glacial meltwater. The autumn silence and palette of colors here are especially rich. Bring a thermos: there are few cafés on the route, and you will be walking through the ravines for several hours.
Other autumn spots in Latvia
Besides the places mentioned, there are other spots. The Ogre River embankment offers views of the river bends; in autumn, the banks blaze with the color of leaves. The health trail in Rauna runs along the river past outcrops of white sandstone and forest: a convenient route for a couple of hours. In Koknese, multicolored foliage surrounds the walls of the old castle and creates a romantic mood. And the panoramas of Alūksne with Pilssala island and Tempļa kalns hill are good all year round.
© Karlis Ustups · CC BY-SAPhoto: Karlis Ustups, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsAn idea for a day: choose one river or one castle and do not try to cover everything at once. An autumn day is short, and there is little light after 4:00 PM. If you are filming, arrive by midday and keep a tripod handy.
Fall events and festivals
In fall, Latvia hosts fairs, festivals, and concerts that have become annual traditions. They give you a chance to feel the local atmosphere and try seasonal products. Below are the key events worth building into your trip.
Event | When | Where |
|---|---|---|
Miķeļdiena, harvest festival | late September | Riga and other cities |
Poetry Days | early September | Riga and the regions |
Riga IFF, film festival | October 15-25, 2026 (as of 09/2026, public broadcaster LSM) | Riga, Sigulda, Daugavpils |
Restaurant Week | late October - early November (as of 09/2026, Latvia tourism office) | Riga |
White Night | October | Riga |
In late September, Latvia celebrates Miķeļdiena, the harvest festival. These are lively fair days: squares fill with cranberries, apples, honey, fall flowers, and handmade crafts. The Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum traditionally hosts a fair with Latvian crafts and folk group performances.
Beyond the fairs, fall is also the season for opera, theater premieres, and concerts. The Riga International Film Festival (Riga IFF) takes place in October and brings premieres and auteur cinema. In 2026, the 13th edition runs for 11 days, from October 15 to 25 (as of 09/2026, LSM). Screenings are held at Splendid Palace, Forum Cinemas, the National Library of Latvia, and also in Sigulda.
Poetry Days, held in honor of poet Rainis's birthday in early September, create a special atmosphere in Riga and other cities: readings take place in parks, on the streets, and in cafes. If you are in Riga, also check out White Night, the traditional contemporary culture forum.
It is best to book concert tickets and city tours in advance: tours and tickets on GetYourGuide. During festival days, hotels in central Riga get more expensive, so book a month ahead.
Spas, manor houses, and glamping
Dark evenings and cool weather invite warmth and coziness. After a day of walking, it is nice to return somewhere you can unwind. Latvia's spa centers are especially good in fall: they become little islands where you can shelter from the rain and wind. A hotel with a spa is a great option for a fall getaway for two: rooms, treatments, dinner, and unhurried time together.
Jūrmala, the oldest and most popular seaside resort, is a classic choice for a fall vacation. Here you can walk along the shore and then head to the sauna and pool. Many spa hotels in Jūrmala offer a wide range of treatments and close proximity to the sea. You can compare options and prices in advance: hotels in Jūrmala on Trip.com.
Jūrmala stretches along the sea for several kilometers. The main pedestrian artery is Jomas Street, with its cafes and shops. In the evening it is quiet and uncrowded here, with shop windows glowing.
Sigulda, Ventspils, and Liepāja also have good spa hotels set among scenic views, and the nighttime silence reveals a starry sky. If you are looking for seclusion, choose manor houses in Vidzeme and nature retreat complexes. On the shores of Latgale's lakes there are villas and forest spas. On the Kurzeme coast, glamping sites and houses with hot tubs and saunas are popular: warm water, a sea view, and the scent of fall all around.
Fall menus and Restaurant Week
After a day spent in fall nature, it is worth stopping by a cozy cafe or restaurant. Candles, calm, and seasonal flavors reign there. At this time of year, they serve dishes made from local ingredients: pumpkin soup, wild mushroom sauces, homemade rye bread, fresh apple flatbread, and herbal drinks.

The Restaurant Week gastronomic festival takes place not only in spring but also in fall. It gives you a chance to try refined dishes at affordable prices. In 2026, Riga Restaurant Week runs in late October and early November (as of 09/2026, Latvia tourism office website). Book your table in advance: popular spots fill up several days ahead.
Local markets and home-style shops are full of temptations this season: freshly squeezed juice, colorful candies, jams, pickles, dried and smoked products. It is the taste of a home table, easy to take with you.
How to get there and get around
Riga is the base for a fall trip. Suburban trains run to Sigulda and Jurmala, and trains and buses go to Liepaja and Daugavpils. There is no train to Kuldiga, so you get there by bus or car. Check schedules and tickets on train and bus schedules. If you are going for one or two days, the train is cheaper and faster than a car stuck in traffic.
For several parks and the Kurzeme bluffs, a car is more convenient. You choose your own timing and do not depend on a schedule. You can compare rental terms here: compare car rental prices. Get a car with full insurance: some coastal roads are unpaved.
If you are going to Latgale or the Kurzeme bluffs, plan to stay overnight in the region. Travel between regions takes hours, and fall daylight is short at the end of the day. Just in case, keep rain gear and spare water in the car.
⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
How long does golden autumn last in Latvia?
Golden autumn in Latvia lasts about three to four weeks. The season runs from late September to mid or late October, depending on the weather (as of 09/2026, official tourism portal of Latvia).
Where can I see the brightest fall colors?
The most striking landscapes are in Gauja National Park near Sigulda, the Kemeri bog, and the hills of the Abava Valley. In Latgale, it is the shores of Lake Razna. For city life and markets, choose Riga; for the sea, choose Jurmala and the bluffs near Jurkalne. On the Vidzeme coast, rocky beaches with boulders are especially beautiful in fall.
Is fall in Latvia expensive?
Nature sites and trails are often free or cost a few euros, and accommodation is the biggest budget item. Jurmala spa hotels are cheaper in October than in summer, and occupancy is lower. Compare options on Trip.com and book in advance, and a fall weekend will cost less.
How do I get to Sigulda and Jurmala from Riga?
Vivi suburban trains run to both towns. The trip to Sigulda takes under an hour, and to Jurmala noticeably less. Buy tickets in the app or at the station, and check schedules on the Vivi carrier website. A car is only necessary if you want to go far from the railway.
What should I pack for fall?
Bring waterproof shoes, a warm layer, and a rain jacket: mornings on the trails are cold, and rain is frequent in fall. Hiking shoes are useful for bogs and bluffs. Keep hot tea in a thermos, as many routes have no cafes. A waterproof cover for your backpack is also a good idea.
In short: what to book
- If you have a couple of days in Riga: choose Jurmala and Sigulda, both reachable by train.
- If you have a car: add the Abava Valley, Kuldiga, and the bluffs near Jurkalne.
- If you have a week: add Latgale and Razna National Park with an overnight stay.
- If you are going for food: catch Riga Restaurant Week.
Golden autumn is short, so pick your dates first, then your destinations. For Sigulda and Jurmala, a base in Riga is enough; for Kurzeme and Latgale, you need to stay overnight in the region. See accommodation options in Jurmala on Trip.com.
