Long-haul flights arrive at Zurich Airport (ZRH), Geneva (Genève, GVA), and Basel-Mulhouse (BSL). The largest of them, Zurich, serves as the hub for Swiss airlines. S-Bahn trains leave from here to the city center every few minutes.
Flying pays off when you start far from the Alps. From Madrid, Lisbon, or Stockholm, a plane saves a whole day. Munich, Vienna, or Frankfurt are a different story: here the train is often faster if you count the trip to the airport and waiting at the gate.

Train: direct routes to the city center

TGV Lyria runs from Paris. A direct train to Zurich takes 4 hours 3 minutes, with up to six departures a day, and from Basel SBB to Paris the journey takes 3 hours 3 minutes (as of 09/2026, SBB). The first train leaves in the morning and the last in the evening, so you can plan your travel day freely.
From Vienna to Zurich there is a direct Railjet, about 8 hours on the way (as of 09/2026, ÖBB). From Berlin and Hamburg, direct ICE trains reach Basel SBB, where you transfer to Swiss trains. That way you can get to Bern, Geneva, or Interlaken in one day.

The route through Germany is convenient for Basel, Bern, and Zurich. Going through France makes more sense for Geneva and Lausanne. Trains run frequently, so you are hardly tied to a specific departure time.

Bus: FlixBus and overnight trips
The bus is cheaper than the other options. FlixBus connects Switzerland with Germany, Austria, and France: around 400,000 connections per day and 3,000 cities in the network (as of 09/2026, FlixBus). From Berlin, Munich, or Vienna, the bus takes longer than the train, but the ticket costs noticeably less.
