The most beautiful way into town is by rail. You board a train in Kandy and get off at Nanu Oya station, from there a tuk-tuk or taxi will take you to Nuwara Eliya. It is best to book seats in advance, especially in the dry season. From Colombo or the airport, it is more convenient to first get to Kandy and then head up into the mountains. The road from Kandy winds along switchbacks and takes about the same amount of time.
