Weather in Portugal in April: general overview

April in Portugal is a transition from a cool spring to the warm season. Days get longer, the sun appears more often, and temperatures rise week by week. The country's climate is uneven, so you will feel the difference between regions right away.

Ocean, rocky coast and Madeira terraces

On average, daytime temperatures across the country stay in the 16-22 °C range depending on the region. At night they drop to 10-14 °C, so a light jacket or sweater will come in handy for an evening walk.

Compared to winter, there is less rain. In the south, in the Algarve and Alentejo, April brings plenty of sunny and dry days. In the north and center, short showers are still possible, so keep a backup plan for the day.

By the end of the month it gets noticeably warmer than at the beginning, and you can already plan trips counting on good weather. One thing to keep in mind: April is not yet the season for long swims in the ocean, but it is great for walks and sightseeing.

Where it is warmest: weather by region

Portugal stretches from north to south, and in April this difference is felt most strongly. Below we break down the weather by region so you can choose a base for your scenario.

Algarve weather in April

The Algarve in April is one of the warmest regions in the country. During the day the air warms up to 20-22 °C, and on some days it reaches 25 °C. The sun shines for an average of 8-9 hours a day, and rain is rare here.

The sea water is still cool, around 17 °C. Long swims are not comfortable for everyone, but the beaches are almost empty, and convenient walking trails run along the cliffs.

The landscape in April is green and blooming. The cities of Faro and Lagos are already living their spring life, and accommodation prices stay moderate until Easter week begins. It is convenient to compare Algarve hotel prices in advance.

  • The catch: water around 17 °C, too cold for long swims.

Lisbon weather in April

In Lisbon, April brings mild weather for the city. During the day it is most often 18-20 °C, there is plenty of sun, but there is more rain here than in the Algarve. Evenings stay cool, and you will definitely need a light jacket.

The city comes alive, but there are no summer crowds yet. You can easily walk through the historic neighborhoods, see the main viewpoints, and sit in a cafe without long lines.

For getting around the city, bring comfortable shoes, because some streets go uphill. That way you will cover more ground and get less tired.

Porto and northern Portugal weather

The north, including Porto and the Douro Valley, is cooler and wetter in April. Daytime temperatures here are 16-18 °C, and the month averages 8-10 rainy days. Between showers, there are still long sunny windows, and that is enough time for a walk around the city.

Bring a waterproof jacket. In return, you will see the green, blooming Douro Valley and old towns like Guimarães and Braga without the crowds. Porto's wine cellars operate at a relaxed pace in April, and you can book a tasting the same day.

  • The catch: dampness and quickly changing weather, so it is best to keep plans flexible.

Weather in the center, Alentejo, Madeira, and the Azores

The center of the country, such as Coimbra and Serra da Estrela, matches the north in temperature. This is a good option for culture and low-altitude hikes where dampness does not get in the way.

Alentejo is as warm as the Algarve, but the air is drier and there is more sun. Set aside a day for Évora and for the local wineries, where terraces are already open in April.

Madeira in April stays around 20 °C and is suitable for hiking the levadas. Rain is possible but usually brief, so a route rarely gets canceled.

The Azores are the most changeable: 16-18 °C and frequent showers. In return, this is the start of whale-watching season. In good weather, you can reach the crater lakes and viewpoints above the calderas.

What to do in Portugal in April

April opens up almost every kind of trip. Warm weather and blooming nature let you combine city and nature in a single trip.

One trip is easy to build so that you cover both city and nature in a week. You explore Lisbon or Porto, then head to Alentejo or the coast for a couple of days.

  • Cities. In Lisbon and Porto, the heat does not get in the way of long walks. Museums and viewpoints operate without summer lines, and you can spend the evening in a fado bar.
  • Hiking. This is the best month for walking routes. Hike sections of the Rota Vicentina in Alentejo and on the Costa Vicentina, climb the levadas of Madeira, or reach the crater lakes of the Azores.
  • Wine and food. The Douro Valley comes alive: quintas reopen for tastings, and tables are set out on terraces. It is best to book a day or two ahead.
  • Beach and ocean. The water is still cool, but the beaches of the Algarve and Costa Vicentina are good for long walks and the first sunbathing. Surfers find waves on the west coast.
  • Holidays. If Easter falls in April, processions take place across the country. Check the schedule with the local tourist office.

Tours in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve are worth looking into in advance: find a tour on GetYourGuide.

What to pack for an April trip

April weather is changeable, so pack for several scenarios. During the day, a T-shirt and light trousers will be enough.

The main principle is layers. That way you can easily adjust to a day that starts cool, warms up in the afternoon, and turns fresh again in the evening.

  • A light jacket or sweater for evenings: at night the temperature drops to 10-14 °C (as of 09/2026, IPMA normals).
  • A raincoat or compact umbrella, especially for the north of the country.
  • Comfortable shoes for the city and hikes. For the north, add waterproof boots, as trails stay damp after rain.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: the April sun is already noticeable.

One tip: do not pack only summer clothes. A cool evening on the waterfront can easily ruin your mood if you were counting on heat.

Hotels, prices and car rental in April

April is low season, so prices for accommodation and tickets stay moderate. The main increase starts in May.

There are two exceptions. The first is Easter week: in religious centers prices jump and accommodation gets booked up in advance. The second is Lisbon and Porto, where prices are higher all year round.

Book in advance, especially if your dates fall on Easter. That way you get both choice and a better price.

Another plus of April is quiet roads. You can drive between cities without summer traffic jams, and on the coast it is easier to find a place to stop.

Car rental in April is also a good deal: you can get a car cheaper than in June. For a road trip around the country, this is a convenient option. Compare rates through car rental on DiscoverCars.
