Puerto Plata: where to stay and what to see on the north coast
Puerto Plata: a resort town on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
Three resort areas have grown up around the city. In Playa Dorada, visitors stay in beachfront hotels; Cabarete is all about the wind; and Sosúa draws people looking for quiet days by the water and evening bars. The strip of beaches runs along the coast for dozens of kilometers.
The only cable car in the Caribbean takes visitors to the top of Isabel de Torres, to the statue of Christ (according to the Dominican Republic tourism office). Below, you'll compare the areas, figure out the route from the airport, and learn when whales come to Samaná Bay.

Playa Dorada: hotels and a long beach
Playa Dorada sits 5 km from the center of Puerto Plata (on the map). The area is built up with large hotel complexes, and it also has a golf course and an equestrian club. The hotels are steps from the water: you walk out of your room and straight onto the sand.
Nearby begins Long Beach, the first in the chain of long beaches along the north coast. The sand stretches for dozens of kilometers, and in the morning you'll hardly see anyone. From the airport to the Playa Dorada hotels is about a 15-minute drive (according to transfer services).

Cabarete: wind and kitesurfing
Cabarete lies east of Puerto Plata, farther than Sosúa, and runs on wind. This is where people kitesurf and windsurf. The wind blows almost year-round, and the most consistent season runs from April to August (according to kitesurfing schools).

Sosúa: a quiet village by the sea
Sosúa sits 20 km from Puerto Plata (on the map) and is considered the calmest of the three areas. People come here to get away from noise and city crowds. You get an unhurried day by the water and an evening stroll along the main street.

The cable car to Isabel de Torres
The cable car (Teleférico) takes you to the top of Isabel de Torres. From above, you can see the whole city, the bay, and the Atlantic. At the top, you'll find the statue of Christ, a botanical garden, and short trails along the slope.

Arrive at opening time, before the clouds cover the summit. By midday, the view of the city often disappears, and you'll ride up into a whiteout.

Fortaleza San Felipe and the old town museums
Fortaleza San Felipe stands at the end of the Malecón boardwalk and once defended the coast from pirates. Inside, there's a museum, and the walls offer a view of the bay. An hour is enough to see it.
In the old town you'll find several museums. The amber museum and the Taíno Indian museum are worth a visit, and the rum factory shows how local rum is made. Families with kids over ten go here without worry, because the exhibits are short.

Excursions and a trip to Santo Domingo
Puerto Plata is a convenient base for day trips. In Santo Domingo, tourists go for colonial architecture and shopping: the city's malls cover any shopping list. The drive takes about three hours each way (on the map), so book a ready-made tour.
If you're short on time, pick a program without long transfers. Otherwise you'll spend half a day on a bus.
Whale watching in Samaná
In winter, humpback whales come to Samaná Bay, and boat tours are organized to see them. The official season opens on January 15 and closes at the end of March, with the peak in February (according to Samaná operators). At other times the whales leave, but yacht trips, catamaran cruises, and fishing remain.

How to get from the airport
The region receives flights at Gregorio Luperón Airport (POP). From there it's about 15 minutes to Playa Dorada, 20-25 minutes to Sosúa, and about 35 to Cabarete (according to transfer companies). A taxi on the spot costs more than a transfer you booked in advance.

Hotels are concentrated in Playa Dorada and along the shore in Sosúa. Playa Dorada is dominated by all-inclusive resorts, while Sosúa has more small hotels and apartments. If you're coming for kitesurfing, look for accommodation in Cabarete: you can walk to the water there.
