Santa Claus doesn't live in a fairy tale. His village sits right on the Arctic Circle near Rovaniemi, and entry to the grounds is free as of the official website (09/2026). The big man's office, the main post office, and the reindeer farm operate almost year-round, while the snow slides are open only from December through March. The busiest weeks fall in December. Santa Claus Village (Santa Claus Village) sits on the Arctic Circle a few kilometers from Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. It's not an attraction with a ticket booth at the entrance, but a living settlement of wooden houses where life doesn't stop in winter or summer. Here you'll find Santa's own office, the main post office, a reindeer farm, workshops, and dozens of souvenir shops.

The grounds are open year-round, and you can walk around without a ticket (as of the village, 09/2026). You pay for entry to individual parks, for the official photo with Santa, for rides, and for food. Summer is quieter here, but many winter activities are closed, so a visit in December and January has a completely different feel.

How the village on the Arctic Circle came to be

In 1950, Eleanor Roosevelt, the widow of the US president, was planning a trip to Lapland (as of the village's official website, 09/2026). According to local legend, Santa Claus's birthplace lies near Rovaniemi, so the Finns built a small cabin for the distinguished guest. That's where Santa met her.

After Eleanor's visit, curious travelers started coming here. At first just a few, then dozens, and today it's one of the most recognizable destinations in Finland. The tiny settlement grew into an entertainment center that stays open year-round.

Finns believe the real Joulupukki lives with his wife Muori near the Korvatunturi fell. It is a remote place hundreds of kilometers from any city, and you cannot get there. To talk to the wizard, he comes to his residence by reindeer sleigh, and here anyone can see him.

Santa Claus Office and main post office

The main spot in the village is the Santa Claus Office. Entry is free, but there is still a ticket desk: personal photography is not allowed inside, and official photos or videos are taken by staff. You buy the finished materials on the way out; check the price on site, as it varies by season.

Next door is the Santa Claus' Main Post Office. This is the wizard's only official post office, and it is part of Finland's Posti network (as of Posti, 09/2026). Here you buy a postcard, write a greeting to your loved ones, and send it right from this spot. The letter gets stamped with the Santa office seal, and the postcards go all over the world.

The workshop next door sells souvenirs, and some of them can be shipped to your address later. This is convenient if you do not want to carry fragile items halfway across the country.

Opening hours, admission, and photos with Santa Claus

The village schedule is seasonal, so it is worth checking the official pages before your trip. The summary as of 09/2026 looks like this:

Santa's office hours are confirmed on his website (as of 09/2026). During peak season, from November 30 to January 3, the wizard welcomes guests from eight in the morning to eight in the evening, seven days a week. In spring, the workday is noticeably shorter. Entry to the office is free; you pay only for photos and videos.

The line to see Santa in December can take over an hour, so arrive at opening time or pick a weekday.

Arctic Circle, certificate, and distance post

The actual Arctic Circle runs right through the village. On the square it is marked with a white line and the words Arctic Circle: once you step across it, you are formally in the Arctic. For making the crossing you get a commemorative certificate, issued at the Arctic Circle Tourist Information point in the Santa's Gift House building (as of the village, 09/2026). They can also help you book excursions around the region.

Nearby there is a post with signs pointing to major world cities and the distances to them. It is a favorite photo spot, and there is almost always someone standing there with a camera.

Snowman World and the ice hotel

The winter world in the village does not operate year-round. Snowman World park opens on December 6, 2026 and closes its season on March 17, 2027 (as of Snowman World, 09/2026). Inside there are ice slides, a skating rink and a snow maze, and the Snow Restaurant and ice bar operate on the grounds.

• The catch: the park is open only from December to March; in summer there are no slides or ice bar here.

For an ice hotel where you can spend the night, look not in the village itself but near the city. The Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos complex welcomes guests from December 15 to March 31 (as of the hotel, 09/2026). The rooms are carved out of ice, and the temperature stays around zero or below, so you sleep in a warm sleeping bag. Book a night in an ice room in advance.

This kind of overnight stay is not for everyone: if you get cold easily, stick to a tour and the ice bar.

Reindeer farm and SantaPark

At the village reindeer farm you will see the very reindeer that pull Santa's sleigh. You can also take a sleigh ride and feed the animals here. For children it is an event in itself, and adults enjoy the unhurried pace of the ride through the forest.

The second big park is SantaPark, an underground complex built into the rock. It is open from October 31, 2026 to January 23, 2027 (as of SantaPark, 09/2026). An adult ticket costs from 42 €, a child aged 3 to 12 from 37 €, and children under three enter free (as of 09/2026, SantaPark).

Inside you enter an elf cave, an elf school and a magic train. Children take a course in magical sciences and receive a diploma, and in Mrs. Gingerbread's confectionery they learn to bake gingerbread cookies. For families with children this is the fullest day in the village.

• The catch: SantaPark is open only from October 31 to January 23; outside the season you cannot get into the rock.

Where to stay nearby

Lodging in the village itself is limited, so most visitors stay in Rovaniemi. The city center is close by, and you can easily get back to your hotel after the evening lights.
