10 Hotels in Rovaniemi: igloos, in-room sauna and hunting for the aurora

The Northern Lights don't run on a schedule. But the hotel for seeing them is booked well in advance: the best glass igloos in Rovaniemi sell out several months before the season starts.

Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle and is officially considered the hometown of Santa Claus. There are more than ten places to stay here: from designer cabins with panoramic glass walls to budget wooden huts right next to Santa Claus Village.

Below are ten hotels with honest pros and cons, four city neighborhoods, transportation, and tips on how to chase the aurora without a guide. Hotel locations and the Northern Lights season: verified on 09/15/2026 on the official Rovaniemi tourism office website.

What you need to know before traveling to Rovaniemi

💡 In short:

  • Rovaniemi sits almost exactly on the Arctic Circle line; it's the gateway to Finnish Lapland.
  • Plan for at least three nights, and if you're specifically chasing the aurora, book five.
  • The Northern Lights season runs from late August to early April.
  • Prices, Northern Lights season, and transportation: 09/2026, verified on the official Visit Rovaniemi website.

How many days you need in Rovaniemi

Three nights cover the basics: Santa Claus Village, husky sledding, sauna. But the Northern Lights are not a guarantee, they're a lottery, so aurora hunters book five nights or more. Each additional night increases your chance of clear skies.

Those who don't like crowds

Winter in Rovaniemi is seriously cold with lots of snow; at night the temperature drops well below freezing. Bring several layers, wool works better than cotton. In December there are only a couple of hours of daylight, but it's exactly in the twilight that the city looks best in photos.

Northern Lights season

According to the tourism office, the aurora in Rovaniemi can be seen from late August to early April, when nights are dark and activity is higher (Visit Rovaniemi). From the city center the lights are rarely visible: street lights get in the way. Outside the city limits, where it's darker, the chances are noticeably higher. It's best to get ten to fifteen kilometers away from the lights (on the map), and countryside resorts are located exactly in such places. Before heading out, check the activity forecast: apps like My Aurora Forecast show probability by the hour.

How to get to Rovaniemi

The fastest way is by plane with a connection in Helsinki: Rovaniemi Airport is about ten kilometers from the center (on the map), roughly a fifteen-minute drive. If you have more time, the Santa Claus Express night train runs from Helsinki to Rovaniemi with sleeping-car berths (VR). Taxis and hotel shuttles run from the airport to the city. Local bus number 8 runs between the center and Santa Claus Village year-round, and express buses are added from November through March (Santa Claus Village).

Do you need a car in Rovaniemi

Not for the city itself: the center is compact, and most hotels pick guests up for excursions. You need a car if you want to chase the northern lights on your own or stay outside the city. If you plan to drive a lot, check car rental prices in Rovaniemi.

Four areas: where exactly to stay

The area matters more than the hotel class. The same budget gets you either a forest view or walkable access to restaurants.

Santa Claus Village

Santa's Village sits right on the Arctic Circle, eight kilometers from the center (on the map). This is where you'll find Santa's post office, souvenir shops, and reindeer. Who it's for: families with kids and anyone who wants the Christmas atmosphere year-round. You can stay right in the village: Santa's Igloos Arctic Circle, Nova Skyland Hotel, and Santa Claus Holiday Village are all within walking distance of Santa's post office.

Rovaniemi city center

A compact center with restaurants, bars, and shops, all within walking distance. Who it's for: those visiting for a couple of days, traveling solo, or not wanting to depend on a car. Arctic Light Hotel, Arctic City Hotel, and Haawe Boutique Apart Hotel are in the center.

Ounasvaara

A hill across the river from the center: ski slopes, forest trails, and hotels with valley views. Who it's for: skiers and those who love quiet. On and near the hill: Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara and Arctic TreeHouse Hotel.

Outside the city

Resorts outside the city offer the darkest nights and the fewest neighbors. Who it's for: northern lights hunters and couples who want peace and quiet. It's inconvenient here without a car or shuttle. Out-of-town options in this selection: Apukka Resort and Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos.

What to do in winter in Rovaniemi

The hotel is your base, but people come here for the activities, and almost all of them need to be booked in advance.

  • Husky sledding. Short one-hour rides and longer routes with a tea break by the fire. Pickup is available right from hotels in the center.
  • Reindeer safaris. Slower and calmer than dog sledding, great for families with kids.
  • Snowmobiles. Routes go across frozen lakes and forest roads, a license is usually not required.
  • Ice bar. Visit Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos even without staying overnight: ice corridors, sculptures, and a glass you can smash against the wall.
  • Sauna. A Finnish classic after the cold: some hotels have a sauna right in the room.
  • Skiing at Ounasvaara. Slopes and lit trails ten minutes from the center (on the map).
  • Santa's Village. Santa's post office, souvenir shops, and family restaurants are open year-round.
  • Northern lights hunting with a guide. An evening trip with a photographer who knows spots away from city lights.

In December and January demand peaks, so it's best to book activities together with your hotel.

1. Arctic TreeHouse Hotel

Designer cabins on stilts in a pine forest, each with panoramic north-facing windows. You can see the sky right from the bed, so you can wait for the northern lights without going outside. The rooms are spaced so you barely see your neighbors.

Arctic TreeHouse cabins among pines by the road
  • Who it's for: couples and those who value quiet and a view.
  • Not for: families with small children who need a pool and entertainment.
  • Location: away from the center, inconvenient without a car or shuttle.
  • Price: high price level, the most expensive option in this selection; suites and views are described on the official website (checked 09/15/2026). Arctic TreeHouse Hotel prices on Trip.com

2. Apukka Resort

A resort outside the city that brings together glass igloos, Aurora cabins, lakeside apartments, and a separate villa for larger groups under one brand. Almost all winter activities happen on site: husky sledding, snowmobiles, sauna, and evening aurora hunting.

  • Who it's for: those who want activities and the aurora without daily transfers.
  • Not for: those who want the city right outside their window: in the evening there is only forest and lake here.
  • Location: outside the city, a shuttle runs to the center and Santa Claus Village (bus and shuttle schedule).
  • Food: the Kota restaurant, shaped like a wooden teepee, serves a three-course set menu on a fixed schedule, verified on 15.09.2026 on the official website; the second restaurant, Aitta, accepts walk-ins.
  • Price: Apukka cabins and igloos on Trip.com
  • The catch: cabins and igloos are packed close together, so there is little privacy. Thick curtains on the windows solve the problem.

3. Arctic snowhotel & glass igloos

An ice hotel and igloos with 360-degree views on a lakeshore, far from city lights (official website). People come here even without staying overnight: inside the ice bar you can try local liqueurs and smash your glass against the wall. The ice rooms themselves operate seasonally, while the glass igloos run longer.

  • Who it's for: those who want one unusual experience of sleeping on ice.
  • Location: about half an hour by car from the center (according to the map).
  • Price: rooms at Arctic SnowHotel on Trip.com

  • Who it's for: couples who want an igloo without the price tag of a luxury resort.
  • Location: next to Santa Claus Village, within walking distance of Santa's post office.

  • Location: center, restaurants and shops within walking distance.
  • Price: rooms at Arctic Light Hotel

  • The catch: the place is extremely popular, so it gets noisy and crowded during the day.
  • Price: Santa Claus Holiday Village cottages

8. Arctic City Hotel

The most convenient address if you arrive by car: the hotel has parking and EV charging, a rare option for central Rovaniemi.

  • Who it's for: travelers combining city time with aurora trips in their own car.

  • Location: center, within walking distance of the railway station.

Hotels for watching the northern lights

Four addresses in Rovaniemi cover the aurora topic better than the rest. These are Arctic TreeHouse Hotel, Apukka Resort, Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos, and Santa's Igloos Arctic Circle. Details on each are collected in the cards above.

Tips for a winter trip

  • Track the aurora forecast. The My Aurora Forecast and Aurora Alerts apps show activity in real time.
  • Check the weather every day. In Lapland conditions change quickly, and the local Finnish weather station is more accurate than your app.
  • Get an eSIM with data. Constantly checking the forecast and maps is easier without roaming: eSIM for Finland connects before you fly.
  • Dress in layers. Thermal underwear, fleece, membrane. This way you won't freeze while waiting in line for a sled ride.
  • Book in advance. Igloos and glass cabins in December sell out months ahead.
  • Watch road conditions. In winter it's slippery here and daylight hours are short, so it's better to plan your route in advance.
  • Keep the short daylight hours in mind. In December the sun barely rises, but twilight gives the best light for photos. In March there's noticeably more light.
  • Don't count on a guarantee. The aurora in Rovaniemi is not an obligation. The more nights, the higher the chance.
  • Bring a card. Finland is almost entirely cashless, cash is rarely needed, and the currency here is the euro.
  • Don't worry about the language. Finns speak English well, but a couple of Finnish words are always appreciated by your conversation partner.
  • Pack your camera gear. The aurora is shot with a tripod, a wide-angle lens, and spare batteries, which drain quickly in the cold. A headlamp will also come in handy.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Can you see the northern lights from central Rovaniemi?

Sometimes yes, but rarely: street lights eat up the contrast. Countryside resorts give you noticeably better chances.

How many nights should you book for aurora hunting?

Three nights is the minimum for a basic program, five or more for aurora hunting. Clouds often linger in Lapland, so two nights are almost always not enough.

Do you need a car to stay in Rovaniemi in winter?

Not necessarily. A car is only useful for independent aurora trips or a countryside resort without a shuttle.

Do hotels in Rovaniemi have a sauna?

Yes, and in some it's included in the room. For example, Nova Skyland Hotel suites come with their own sauna. Other hotels have different arrangements, so check when booking.

When should you go to catch the aurora without freezing?

Late August, September, and March give you a balance: nights are dark and frosts are milder than in January. December and February are colder and darker, but that's classic winter Lapland with maximum snow.

Can you visit Rovaniemi with kids?

Yes, there are many families here in winter. Santa Claus Village, husky sled rides, and reindeer farms are designed for children, and budget cabins like Santa Claus Holiday Village solve the question of staying overnight inside the village.

How much does a night in a glass igloo cost?

The price level is high, and the range is wide. Cabins near Santa's Village cost several times less than an igloo at a countryside resort, and the gap grows in December and January. Exact prices depend on the date, so compare options for your dates and book in advance.
