Transfer from Koh Samui airport: taxi, minibus and minivan to the beaches
At Samui airport there are no metered taxis. All rides operate on fixed zones, and you pay at the transport counter, not to the driver at the car. The counter is right at the arrivals hall exit, next to the baggage carousel.
In winter, when a full Bangkok Airways flight disembarks at once, the line at the counter stretches out, and available cars are snapped up within minutes. We have put together every way to get from Samui airport to Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, and Mae Nam: taxi, shared minibus, private minivan, hotel transfer, and car rental.
You will see how much each ride costs, how long the drive to the beach takes, and which option to pick for your group.
Taxi from Samui airport: fixed rates
💡 In short:
- Taxis operate by zone, and a car to the island's resorts costs 400-850 baht, with the rate posted at the counter in the arrivals hall.
- A shared minibus is noticeably cheaper than a taxi: a seat to Chaweng costs in the low three-digit range in baht per person.
- Booking a transfer in advance eliminates the line at the counter and waiting on the spot.
- Rates and travel times: 07/2026, verified via The Thailand Guides.

You buy a voucher at the counter, hand it to the driver, and only then get in the car. Haggling is pointless: the price is tied to the zone where your hotel is located and is posted on a board next to the counter.
The counter operates around the clock, and several cars are on standby for every arrival. Cars are available at night too. The rate is the same as during the day. Driver tips are not included in the price, so a small amount for help with luggage is up to you. The exchange rate at the terminal is worse than in town, so it is worth preparing small bills in advance.
Zone | Per car, baht | Travel time |
|---|---|---|
Bophut and Fisherman's Village | 400-500 | 10-15 minutes |
Chaweng | 500-650 | 15-20 minutes |
Choeng Mon and the north of the island | 450-550 | 15-20 minutes |
Lamai | 600-750 | 20-30 minutes |
Nathon and the west | 500-650 | 20-25 minutes |
Na Mueang and the south | 700-850 | 30-35 minutes |
As of 07/2026, The Thailand Guides. Prices are per car, not per person.
Farther south and west, the rate is higher. Besides the six zones in the table, the counter serves Bangrak with the Seatran pier, Bang Por, Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam, Hua Thanon, Plai Laem, and Lam Set. The farther your hotel is from the airport, the more expensive the voucher, so compare by zone, not by hotel star rating.
There is no meter or hourly rate at the airport, so a trip to a neighboring area will not get cheaper through lengthy haggling. The only real saving for a solo traveler is the shared minibus, covered below.

Booking a transfer in advance: how to skip the line
Pre-booking on Samui saves time, not money. The driver waits for you at the exit with a sign, helps with your luggage, and takes you straight to your hotel door. Payment is made at booking, so no cash is needed on the spot.
The markup over the counter rate is usually small, around a hundred or two baht, but you will only see the exact amount when booking. For that money you get a confirmed car rather than a line after landing.
Booking a Samui airport transfer in advance is worth it if you arrive at night, travel with children, or are carrying surfboards and large luggage. When booking, you choose the vehicle class: a sedan for a couple or a minivan for a family and a larger group.
Shared minibus: price and pitfalls
A shared minibus is the cheapest way to get to your hotel. Tickets are sold at exit B of the arrivals hall, and the vehicle leaves once it is full. Waiting at the terminal drags on in the low season. Luggage space is limited. A large suitcase often ends up on your lap.
A ticket to Chaweng costs in the low three-digit range in baht per person, the ride takes about 20 minutes, and you are told the price at the counter before boarding. The driver collects passengers according to a list of hotels and drops them off in turn. If your hotel is off the main road, you may be dropped on the highway and have to walk the last stretch.
At night, shared minibuses barely run, and for distant beaches the vehicles fill up more slowly. Book in advance if your arrival is late.
Private minivan: good value for groups
A private minivan is a vehicle all to yourself. Your whole group gets in with the luggage, so the price is split among everyone.
To Chaweng, a minivan for four people costs in the high three-digit range in baht per vehicle, and that amount is quoted at the counter. The counter quotes the price per vehicle, not per person, so for three or more passengers each person's share drops noticeably.
This option is chosen by families with children, groups of friends, and people who met on the plane. It is better to book a minivan in advance: at the counter, vehicles of the right size get taken quickly.
Hotel transfer: when the ride is free
Many hotels and resorts offer their guests their own airport transfer. Some provide it free of charge, some for a small supplement that is usually close to the taxi rate or slightly higher.
Ask about this when booking your accommodation, not after you arrive. The hotel driver waits for you in the hall with a sign, and no time is spent at the counter. Several resorts in Chaweng and Lamai include this pickup in the room rate (as of 07/2026, The Thailand Guides). If the pickup is not included in the rate, ask reception for the fixed price: some resorts arrange a car for the required time themselves.
Car and scooter rental at the airport
Rental counters are right in the arrivals hall, and you can get a car immediately after landing. The island is small, the roads are narrow, and parking in central Chaweng is hard to find, so a car is not for everyone.
For getting around the island, many people rent a scooter or call a local taxi. Samui also has songthaews, shared pickup trucks with two rows of seats: they run between beaches and cost less than a taxi.
If you do decide to rent a car, compare car rental prices from international rental companies. They operate under a written contract, not a verbal agreement on the beach.
How to get to Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao
You cannot fly to the neighboring islands. First a minibus takes you to a pier on Samui, then a ferry goes to your island. The counter at the airport sells a combined package, which is convenient if you do not want to find the pier on your own.

The ferry to Ko Pha Ngan takes 30-50 minutes, and a ticket stays in the low three-digit range in baht per person. A high-speed catamaran runs to Ko Tao, taking 1.5-2 hours, and the ticket there is noticeably more expensive, with the fare depending on the operator (Lomprayah schedule and fares).
Services are operated by Lomprayah, Songserm, and Raja Ferry. The last ferries leave in the afternoon, and in the rainy season the schedule shifts with the weather. Check times in advance.
Back to the airport: how much time to allow
At the end of your vacation, you can get a car at your hotel: taxis wait outside most resorts and charge the same fixed zone rate. The second option is to ask reception to call a car for an exact time.

In high season and in the rain, allow extra time, because traffic jams occur on the approach to the terminal. Check-in at the small terminal is quick, and the departure tax is usually already included in the Bangkok Airways ticket (as of 07/2026, The Thailand Guides).
From Chaweng and Lamai, cars run around the clock, so booking several days ahead is not necessary. For a dawn flight, it is better to arrange a car the evening before, so you are not looking for one at the crack of dawn.
⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Samui airport to Chaweng?
A ride to Chaweng costs 500-650 baht per car and takes 15-20 minutes. The rate is fixed and zonal, so haggling at the car changes nothing: payment is made at the counter in the arrivals hall, where the current price list is also posted. If you are traveling alone or as a couple, compare the minibus option: a seat costs in the low three-digit range in baht.
Does Grab work at Samui airport?
Grab exists on Samui, but cars do not always appear right at the terminal. There is no official pickup zone like in Bangkok, so the service should not be your main plan. Within the island, from your hotel to restaurants and beaches, the app works noticeably more reliably.
How do I get to Ko Pha Ngan from the airport?
You can reach the pier in Bangrak by taxi in 20 minutes and a few hundred baht per car. From there the ferry takes 30-50 minutes, and a ticket costs in the low three-digit range in baht per person, with exact fares set by the operator (Lomprayah schedule and fares). The counter at the airport sells a combined package: a minibus to the pier plus a ferry ticket.
Do minibuses run at night?
No, shared minibuses barely run at night: the last vehicles leave in the afternoon or early evening. Services wait until they are full, so in the low season departure times shift. For a night arrival, book a transfer in advance or take a fixed-zone taxi.
Is it worth renting a car?
The island is compact, from Chaweng to Lamai is about half an hour by car, and public transport is limited. If you plan to drive every day, a car or scooter makes sense. For short trips between beaches, it is cheaper to call a taxi or flag down a songthaew.
