What to do in Phuket in three days: temples, water park and a sea day

What to do in Phuket in three days: temples, water park and a sea day

Phuket is sold as an island of beaches. In three days here you can actually fit in more: the golden temples of Chalong, the southern viewpoints, a water park, and a sea excursion.

The catch is logistics. The island stretches almost 50 km from north to south (on the map), so the drive from Karon to the airport takes no less time than a flight between two European cities.

Below is a day-by-day itinerary: what to see, how much it costs, and where the catch is.

What to know before the trip

💡 In short:

  • Day 1: Chalong temples and southern viewpoints, Old Town in the evening.
  • Day 2: a full day at Andamanda water park.
  • Day 3: a sea day, choose between the calm Racha and Coral islands or the Similan Islands.
  • Stay in Kata, Karon, or Patong: most points on the itinerary are 15-30 minutes away.
  • Prices and opening hours: 09/2026, verified on the official Andamanda water park website

Entry. EU and Ukrainian citizens do not need a visa for a short trip, but the TDAC form is filled out online a day or two before departure. Rules change, so check the requirements on the official Thailand immigration service website before you fly.

Money. The island uses baht (THB). Break large bills in advance: at markets, in songthaews, and in small cafes, small change is more useful than a card.

Connectivity. An eSIM is more convenient than roaming: you install the profile before departure and step off the plane with internet access. Grab, Bolt, and map apps start working right away.

Clothing. Temples do not allow bare shoulders and knees. A sarong is often provided at the entrance, but it is safer to bring your own.

Phuket in brief: beaches, culture, first impressions

The west coast is beaches. Patong lives on nightlife, Karon and Kata keep a calm pace, Kamala and Nai Harn suit those looking for quiet. From Patong to Karon is about 9 km by road (on the map): 20-30 minutes with traffic.

The east side is the Old Town with Sino-Portuguese facades, Chalong Bay, and Rassada Pier, where ferries depart. The airport is in the north of the island, and this matters when choosing a hotel: from Kata you drive to it across the entire island.

White sand and turquoise water off the coast of Phuket

Phuket suits you if you want to combine the beach with temples, a water park, and sea excursions. It does not suit those planning to spend two weeks lying by the pool of a single hotel.

Best time to visit Phuket

The dry season is December, January, February, and March. There are 8-9 hours of sun per day, rains are short, the sea is calm, and temperatures stay around 30-34 °C. This is also the most expensive time: hotels in Kata and Karon get booked months in advance.

The rainy season is May to October. Accommodation and tour prices drop noticeably, but the risk rises: waves, canceled sea excursions, up to 20 rainy days per month. If you go during this period, keep a backup land option in case the sea day gets canceled.

Weather data source: Climate Data, 09/2026.

Important: from mid-May to mid-October the Similan Islands are closed to visitors (as of 09/2026, Thailand national park visitation rules). During this same period the west coast is often stormy, and sea tours get canceled.

How to get to Phuket

Phuket Airport (HKT) in the north of the island receives direct flights from Europe, flights from Bangkok, and connections via Doha, Dubai, and Singapore. From the airport to Kata, Karon, or Patong you drive 45-60 minutes depending on traffic (on the map).

Ferries run from Phi Phi, Krabi, and Lanta: departures almost every hour, travel time from one to two hours (per carrier schedules, 09/2026). Tickets are easier to book in advance through 12Go Asia; in high season seats sell out.

Check flight prices by date: Phuket flights.

Airport transfer: what to choose

A private transfer is the most predictable option. The driver waits in the arrivals hall, the car has air conditioning, about an hour of free waiting, and cancellation is possible before the trip. The price is fixed at booking, with no extra charges for traffic.

Classic taxis operate without a meter and ask for a fixed amount. Grab and Bolt are available in Phuket, but they are usually not allowed to pick up at the airport, so you should not count on them upon arrival.

Phuket Smart Bus is the cheapest way to reach the beach areas. The bus goes to Patong, Kamala, Karon, Kata, and Rawai, but it takes 1.5-2 hours: the route winds and sits in traffic. With suitcases, this option is inconvenient.

Book a transfer in advance: Phuket airport transfer.

Getting around the island: Grab, Smart Bus, motorbike, car

The Phuket Smart Bus connects the airport and the main beaches with the city. A ride along the route costs from 50 to 170 baht, buses run roughly every 90 minutes, and you can pay in cash or with a Rabbit Card (as of 09/2026, island guide).

Songthaews, or blue buses, run between Phuket Town and the beaches for 20-25 baht. The vehicles are open-air, run from about 6 am to 6 pm, and you pay the driver in cash. For a short trip without luggage, this is an honest option.

Ride-hailing apps Grab, Bolt, and InDrive operate across the island and are usually cheaper than a regular taxi. Prices are higher than in Bangkok but lower than on Samui.

A motorbike rental costs around 200 baht per day, and a helmet and an international driving permit are mandatory. Only rent one if you have experience riding in dense traffic: the accident rate on the island is high, and damage deposits are paid in cash.

A car with insurance costs from 800 baht per day. The catch is obvious: traffic jams, narrow roads, and almost no parking in Patong and the Old Town. Car rental in Phuket makes sense if you are traveling with a group for several days.

Walking is convenient in the Old Town, Patong, Kata, and Karon. Outside these areas, sidewalks are rare, and the heat makes even a kilometer exhausting.

Day 1: Chalong temples and southern viewpoints

Spend your first day in the south of the island. The temple, the Buddha statue, the capes, and the Old Town are all close together, and the drives between stops are short: from Kata to Chalong takes about 15 minutes (according to the map).

Wat Chalong: the island's main temple

Wat Chalong is the largest and most revered temple complex in Phuket, open from morning until about 5:00 PM (as of 09/2026, the temple's page on Phuket 101). Admission is free. The grounds include several buildings: the main pagoda with murals depicting the life of the Buddha, a hall with gilded statues, and pavilions with mosaics.

Get there at opening time. By midday, buses bring in tour groups, and you can no longer photograph the facade of the main pagoda. An hour is enough to see everything if you don't stop at every display case of offerings.

Shoulders and knees must be covered, and shoes are removed at the entrance to the buildings. Sarongs are provided free at the entrance, but bringing your own is more convenient: there's a line at the distribution point. From Kata, Karon, or Rawai, the drive takes about 20 minutes by Grab (according to the map).

Big Buddha: the statue and the panorama

The white statue, 45 meters tall, stands on Nakkerd Hill. The viewing platform offers a 360-degree panorama: Chalong Bay, Phuket Town, Kata, and Karon. Admission is free, and you can get there by Grab or by motorbike; the road up is steep.

It's important to check the site's status before you go. After a landslide in August 2024, the complex was closed and reopened on March 3, 2026 (as of 09/2026, Window on Phuket). During the rainy season, access may be restricted again due to the risk of rockfall, so check the map listings on the day of your visit.

Southern viewpoints

Promthep Cape is the southernmost point of the island: a parking lot, a staircase, and a view of the Andaman Sea. From the cape, it's about a 20-minute walk to Windmill Viewpoint, where you can see the same coastline without the crowds and buses. Between the two viewpoints lies Yanui Beach: a small cove for snorkeling, where you'll need water shoes because of the rocks at the water's edge.

Nai Harn Beach is a 30-minute walk from the cape: wide sand, trees, and an easy entry into the water. Along the road between Kata and Nai Harn is Karon View Point, with a view of three beaches at once, and Laem Sing View Point is a good spot for sunset.

Old town: Thalang road and Soi Romanee

Sino-Portuguese facades, galleries, and coffee shops begin on Thalang Road, the main street of the Old Town. Soi Romanee is a narrow lane and the most photographed spot, where old residential houses have also been preserved. From Chalong to town takes about 20 minutes (according to the map).

Arrive closer to when the cafes open and leave before sunset. In the evening, the streets turn into a market, and instead of facades you see food stalls and crowds. An hour and a half is enough for a leisurely walk.

Day 2: Andamanda water park

Spend the entire second day at Andamanda Phuket, one of the newest water parks in Asia. This is a case where buying tickets online saves both money and time at the entrance.

Andamanda Water Park with slides and pools

What's inside

  • A dual racing slide: two lanes side by side, great for competing in pairs.
  • Eagle Flyer: a raft slide for groups of up to six people.
  • Sliding Rocks: two high-speed slides with a serious rush at the exit.
  • Rock N' Rafts and Curving Caverns: tube rides with sharp turns.
  • Moken's Boat: a large play and climbing area for kids.

Plus pools, loungers, and a wave zone. The park is themed around Thai mythology, so the scenery is just as impressive as the slides.

Tickets and opening hours

The park is open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM year-round (as of 09/2026, Andamanda official website). An adult ticket purchased online costs 1,800 baht; a child ticket (height 91-121 cm) and a ticket for guests 60 and older costs 1,200 baht (as of 09/2026, Andamanda price list).

Tickets are more expensive at the ticket office, so buy in advance: Andamanda water park tickets. With an online ticket, you enter through a separate entrance and skip the ticket office line.

Practical tips

Arrive 15 minutes before opening: for the first half hour the slides are almost empty, but by midday you'll wait 20-30 minutes for the popular rides. From Kata the trip takes about 30 minutes by Grab or Bolt (based on the map); the alternative is a transfer included with your ticket purchase.

Outside food and drinks are not allowed: bags are checked at the entrance, and inflatable toys are also prohibited. Soft drinks in the park are expensive, but the "unlimited" water system solves that problem. Payments inside are made via a chip bracelet: you load an amount, and any unused balance is refunded in cash at the exit.

Day 3: sea day, Racha and Coral or the Similans

Spend the third day on the water. There are two fundamentally different options: a relaxed tour to the Racha and Coral islands, or a long trip to the Similan Islands. The second option only runs from mid-October, more on that below.

Option 1: Racha and Coral

The tour starts with a transfer from your hotel, then a speedboat takes about 45 minutes to Racha. Racha has a wide, calm beach, clear water, and good visibility for snorkeling: there are plenty of fish even close to shore. Lunch is at a buffet restaurant, which you reach by tractor across the island.

After lunch, it's another 30 minutes on the water to Coral Island. The beach here is noticeably longer, with bars along it, and on the water you can rent a jet ski, ride a banana boat, or go parasailing. The return trip takes about 15 minutes to the pier, followed by a transfer back to the hotel.

The catch with this tour, stated honestly: it's not wild nature, but developed beaches with infrastructure. And one more nuance: at low tide, sea urchins appear in the shallows, so swim in water shoes and don't wade in knee-deep near the rocks.

Option 2: Similan Islands

A strong option for snorkeling. Departure from the hotel at 6-7 AM, then about 1.5 hours to the pier and another 1.5 hours on the boat. Over the course of the day you make four stops: two for snorkeling and two for the beach, with lunch included and served on one of the islands.

The Similans offer the clearest water in Thailand, corals, turtles, and schools of tropical fish. There's no mass crowd like at Maya Bay: quotas and remoteness do their job.

The main seasonal limitation: the park is closed from mid-May to mid-October (as of 09/2026, Thailand Department of National Parks). Park entry is paid separately and is not included in the price of most tours. The new electronic ticket requires a passport number, so arrange it in advance.

Book the Similan Islands tour several days ahead in high season: boats depart with limited capacity.

The catch with this option: about 6 hours are spent just on the round trip, and the day ends up being long. If you only have three days, keep an eye on the forecast: in stormy weather you can swap the sea day with the water park.

Evening program: shows, markets, and nightlife

After sunset, Phuket changes. The choice is simple: a big stage with a Thai show, a night market with street food, or bars in Patong. Below are four options that don't conflict with each other in terms of timing.

Siam Niramit: a big-stage show

The island's largest production runs in Ratsada. More than a hundred performers and over five hundred costumes are on stage, and the program has three acts: ancient kingdoms, religious stories, and traditional festivals with water on stage (as of 09/2026, show's official website).

Colorful Siam Niramit show scene© Kathy · CC BYPhoto: Kathy, CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0), Wikimedia Commons

It's worth arriving early. The grounds open during the day, with a Thai village featuring replicas of houses from different regions, a floating market, and costumed performers you can take photos with for free. The buffet opens at 6:00 PM, the pre-show in the courtyard starts at 7:45 PM, and the main production runs from 8:30 PM (as of 09/2026, schedule on the show's website).

Silver, Gold, and Platinum seats differ in distance from the stage; Gold and Platinum cost more and give you a better view of the entire venue. Get Siam Niramit show tickets online: only leftover seats remain at the door.

Night markets and street food

Markets are the cheapest dinner on the island. A portion of noodles or satay costs a few dozen baht, and you pay in cash.

Next to Kata Night Market, the Kata Walking Street Food Hall operates, a large food court with Thai classics. The logic is simple: get lunch at the food hall, try dinner at the market.

Bars, beach clubs, and nightclubs

The sunset option is the beach clubs in Kamala and Bang Tao: Café del Mar and Catch Beach Club sit right at the water's edge, DJs play in the evening, and cocktails are made from fresh ingredients. Book a lounger for sunset in advance: in high season, front-row spots are taken during the day.

Beyond that, the center of nightlife is Bangla Road in Patong. A mix of signs, street performers, go-go bars, and live music. If you want to dance until morning, check out Illuzion with its large dance floor, as well as Hollywood Phuket, Sugar Club, and White Room Nightclub: the formats vary, from hip-hop to chart hits.

The catch with Patong is obvious: it's noisy, crowded, and pricier than Kata or Karon. From Kata to Bangla Road you'll drive about 30 minutes (per the map), and at night taxis charge a higher rate.

Muay Thai: an evening at the stadium

Thai boxing is a separate attraction. At Bangla Boxing Stadium in Patong, fights take place several times a week: local fighters and foreigners on the same card. Ringside seats give you the full arena feel, but they also cost more.

Muay Thai ring in Patong© USchick · CC BY-SAPhoto: USchick, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia Commons

Tickets are sold at the entrance, but in high season it's better to buy in advance: boxing venues are small, and weekend cards fill up completely.

Where to stay: Kata, Karon, and Patong

The area shapes your day more than the hotel category does. Kata and Karon are calm: long beaches, cafes, minimal nighttime noise. In Patong you live in the center of the entertainment, but you pay for it with noise and traffic.

Kamala and Bang Tao are pricier and quieter, and that's where the beach clubs are. Nai Harn suits a long, relaxed stay, but it's far from the Old Town. From Kata to the airport it's about 45 km (per the map), and from Patong it's roughly the same.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Phuket?

Three days is enough for the Chalong temples, Andamanda water park, and one sea day. If you want to add Phi Phi, Phang Nga, or Muay Thai, plan for at least five days: half of each day goes to transfers, and the drive from Kata to the airport takes almost an hour.

When is the best time to go to Phuket?

The dry season is December to March: 8 to 9 hours of sun per day, short rains, calm sea. From May to October it is cheaper, but sea tours are canceled more often, and the Similan Islands are closed from mid-May to mid-October.

How do you get from the airport to Kata, Karon, or Patong?

The most convenient option is a private transfer or a taxi with a fixed price. Grab and Bolt are usually not allowed to pick up at the airport. The Phuket Smart Bus is cheaper, but it takes 1.5 to 2 hours with stops along the way, so it is a weak option with luggage.

What should you do if your trip falls during the rainy season?

Keep the sea day as one of your options and book a tour to Racha and Coral: the route is short, and it is more often rescheduled than canceled. The Similan Islands are unavailable during this period, but Andamanda water park and the Old Town do not depend on the weather.

Is it worth renting a scooter?

Only if you are confident riding in dense traffic. A helmet and an international driving permit are mandatory, and the deposit for possible damage is paid in cash. For a three-day itinerary, Grab is cheaper and less stressful.

In short: what to book

If you have exactly three days, stick to the plan: the water park on day two, the sea day on day three. With kids, do Andamanda first, then Racha and Coral.
