Where to stay in Stockholm: 5 districts and hotels for any budget

Stockholm sits on 14 islands, and where you stay changes the whole trip. A hotel in Gamla Stan and a hotel in Norrmalm give you a different experience and a very different nightly bill. Below we break down five central districts of the city and name specific hotels and hostels in three price segments for each.

How to choose a district to stay in

💡 In short:

  • Pick the district first, then the hotel: Stockholm's districts differ more in price and atmosphere than the hotels themselves do.
  • On your first visit, go with Gamla Stan or Norrmalm, and for quiet and lower prices head to Kungsholmen.
  • The most expensive nights are in the old town, the cheapest are in Kungsholmen and in Södermalm hostels.

Stockholm's districts almost line up with its islands, and each has its own character: the medieval center, elegant boulevards, the trendy south, quiet residential blocks. That's why the same budget gets you completely different hotels in different districts, and the district choice should be made before booking.

Below are five central districts that work well for staying overnight. For each we've gathered hotels in three price segments, and at the end of the article all districts are marked on a map.

1. Gamla Stan, the old town

Gamla Stan looks like a postcard from Stockholm: narrow medieval lanes, colorful houses, and small squares with cafes. There are more tourists here than anywhere else in the city.

The district is home to the city's main sights: the Royal Palace, Storkyrkan, and the German Church, and some archipelago boat tours depart from here. If you stay in the old town, all of this is right at your doorstep, and the rest of the districts are easy to reach by metro or tram.

The district's popularity shows up in the price: fewer rooms are available, and a night costs more than in other central neighborhoods (as of 09/2026, Stockholm tourist office). On the plus side, you don't need transport to walk to the main sights.

The catch: in summer the lanes are very crowded, and prices are above the city average.

Budget segment

There are only two cheap options in the old town, and both are worth booking in advance: in summer they're the first to sell out.

  • Castanea Old Town Hostel: a hostel in a lane a stone's throw from Stortorget, with both dorms and private rooms. Prices on Trip.com
  • Castle House Inn: a small guesthouse by the Royal Palace, rooms are compact, but the palace is around the corner. Prices on Trip.com

Mid-range segment

The mid-range segment is dominated by boutique hotels in historic buildings, where rooms are compact, but you step out the door straight into the old town's lanes.

If a quiet room matters to you, ask for a courtyard-facing room when booking.

Premium

Premium hotels occupy waterfront buildings and quiet streets: you are expected to pay extra here for a view of the bay or the old town rooftops.

  • Lady Hamilton Hotel: a boutique hotel opposite Storkyrkan with antiques in the rooms; the same family also owns Lord Nelson and Victory. Prices on Trip.com
  • Hôtel Reisen: a hotel on the Skeppsbron waterfront; from the water-view rooms you can see ferries and Södermalm. Prices on Trip.com
  • Victory Hotel: the most expensive of the three "nautical" old town hotels, with a restaurant and a historic cellar. Prices on Trip.com

2. Östermalm and nightlife

Östermalm is considered the most elegant district in Stockholm.

Its wide boulevards are good for a shopping stroll, if you are ready for boutique prices. Between Östermalm and Norrmalm lies the center of nightlife with bars, restaurants, and clubs, so the area suits those who want to go out in the evening without wasting time on travel.

The catch: shops and restaurants are pricier than the city average.

Budget segment

There are almost no inexpensive hotels in Östermalm; the only notable option sits on a side street between the boulevards.

  • ProfilHotels Riddargatan: a simple city hotel on Riddargatan, a couple of minutes from Östermalmstorg metro. Prices on Trip.com

Mid-range

The mid-range here is made up of hotels near the shopping streets, and you can walk to both the metro and the nightlife.

  • Mornington Hotel Stockholm: a hotel with a library in the lobby on Nybrogatan, next to Östermalms Saluhall market. Prices on Trip.com
  • Hotel Esplanade: a small hotel in an Art Nouveau building on the Strandvägen waterfront, with windows facing the water. Prices on Trip.com
  • Story Hotel Stockholm: a design hotel on Riddargatan with a lively ground-floor bar that gets busy in the evenings. Prices on Trip.com

The area is noisy in the evenings, so a room facing the courtyard will be quieter.

  • The Sparrow Hotel: a hotel on Sturegatan with stylish rooms, a gym, and a hearty breakfast. Prices on Trip.com

3. Södermalm, the trendy south

Södermalm is considered Stockholm's trendiest and most characterful district. It has plenty of cafes and restaurants, and prices are lower than in the northern part of the city. Global cuisine, signature cocktails, small shops by young designers, and lots of second-hand stores.

The crowd here is young and lively, and the nightlife is varied. Walk along Monteliusvägen with a waffle and a coffee and take in the view of the bay, then stop by one of the beer gardens in the evening. For overnight stays, the area is convenient because of its prices: by Swedish standards they remain reasonable, and there are more hostels here than in other parts of the city.

The catch: the area around the bars is noisy in the evenings, with little quiet.

Budget

The cheapest options in Södermalm are hostels and small guesthouses. There are more of them here than in the city center, but popular dates should be booked in advance.

  • Skanstulls Boutique Hostel: a hostel near Skanstull metro on the southern edge of the island, with private rooms. Prices on Trip.com
  • Långholmen Hotel: a former prison on Långholmen island, rooms in former cells, with a beach and park nearby. Prices on Trip.com
  • Hotel Hellstens Malmgård: an 18th-century manor with a garden near Zinkensdamm metro, affordable rooms with history. Prices on Trip.com

Mid-range

The mid-range segment has plenty of designer hotels, and you can walk to cafes and bars in a few minutes.

  • Hotel Hornsgatan: a small hotel on one of the island's main streets, between Slussen and Mariatorget metro stations. Prices on Trip.com
  • NOFO Hotel: a boutique hotel in an inner courtyard on Tjärhovsgatan, in the SoFo district of bars and shops. Prices on Trip.com

There are many options here, so compare not only the price but also the location relative to the metro.

Premium

Premium hotels sit by the water and on streets overlooking the bay.

  • Hotel Rival: a hotel on Mariatorget square with its own cinema, owned by Benny Andersson of ABBA. Prices on Trip.com
  • Hotel Frantz: a boutique hotel in a 17th-century building near Slussen, five minutes across the bridge to the old town. Prices on Trip.com

In this segment, you typically pay extra for a bay view, so check what is included in the price.

4. Kungsholmen, the quiet island

Kungsholmen lies on the island of the same name not far from Central Station. The name translates as "King's Island," and it is primarily a quiet residential area.

If you came for entertainment and constant sightseeing, you will most likely be bored here. But the island is good for a few calm days: long walks along the waterfront, kayaking in the bay, two beaches, Smedsuddsbadet and Fredhällsbadet.

Prices here are noticeably lower than in the rest of the center, both for food and accommodation. And it is quick to get to the central districts, so the option is worth considering.

The catch: there is almost no evening entertainment in the area, so you will have to head to the center for that.

Budget segment

Inexpensive hotels are more common here than in the center, and quiet streets and proximity to the water come as part of the package.

  • City Hostel: a hostel on the eastern edge of the island, within walking distance of Central Station. Prices on Trip.com
  • Aiden by Best Western Stockholm City: a chain hotel with small rooms in the residential part of the island. Prices on Trip.com

Mid-range segment

Mid-range hotels sit along the waterfronts and in residential blocks, from where you can quickly reach the center by metro.

  • VANDER Kungsholmen: a hotel on Hantverkargatan next to City Hall, ten minutes on foot to the station. Prices on Trip.com
  • Courtyard by Marriott Stockholm Kungsholmen: a large chain hotel near the park Rålambshovsparken in the west of the island. Prices on Trip.com
  • Clarion Hotel Amaranten: a large hotel with a rooftop terrace near Rådhuset station, one stop to the station. Prices on Trip.com

There is no premium segment as such on the island: for luxury, head to Östermalm or Norrmalm, and choose Kungsholmen for the quiet and the price.

5. Norrmalm, the center and the station

Norrmalm is located in the very center and looks more modern than other districts. It is home to the Central Station and the Arlanda Express, which goes straight to the airport, and the main street Drottninggatan has gathered most of the hotels, restaurants, and fashion stores.

The district is considered the city's shopping center: it is busy both day and evening, with many tourists. Nearby stand Kulturhuset, the National Museum, and Kungsträdgården, Stockholm's central park.

There is less character here than in the old town. The buildings are mostly modern, and the district itself looks impersonal and commercial. But a hotel in Norrmalm is convenient if you need the center, the widest choice of accommodation, and a couple of minutes to the station.

The catch: modern development, almost no historic streets.

Budget segment

Cheap options are concentrated on the streets around the station. It is noisy here during the day, but you are two minutes on foot from the trains, which is convenient for one night before a longer journey.

  • City Backpackers Hostel: the city's best-known hostel on Upplandsgatan, five minutes from the station, with a kitchen and sauna. Prices on Trip.com
  • Scandic Go Stockholm: Scandic's budget format with compact rooms and self check-in. Prices on Trip.com

Mid-range

Mid-range hotels line Drottninggatan and the shopping streets, and you can walk to the metro.

  • Downtown Camper by Scandic: a hotel by Brunkebergstorg square with bike rental and a rooftop pool. Prices on Trip.com
  • Hotel With Urban Deli: a hotel above the Urban Deli grocery store and restaurant on Sveavägen, with a rooftop terrace. Prices on Trip.com
  • Nordic Light Hotel: a hotel with light installations in the rooms, right by Central Station. Prices on Trip.com

The shopping streets are nearby, so the area is busy during the day, and a room facing the courtyard will be quieter.

Premium

Norrmalm's premium hotels occupy buildings in the very center, with views of rooftops and water from the windows, and the station is an easy walk away.

  • Lydmar Hotel: a hotel on the Blasieholmen waterfront next to the National Museum, with a view of the Royal Palace across the water. Prices on Trip.com
  • At Six: a design hotel with a contemporary art collection on Brunkebergstorg, with a rooftop bar nearby. Prices on Trip.com

Rooms on the upper floors are usually quieter and brighter, so ask for one at check-in.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Which Stockholm neighborhood is best for a first visit?

For a first visit, Gamla Stan and Norrmalm are good choices. In the old town you stay right among the sights, while Norrmalm puts you closer to the station and offers more hotel options. Both neighborhoods are connected to the rest of the city by metro and bus, so you can easily get back to your hotel in the evening.

Which Stockholm neighborhood is cheapest for accommodation?

Kungsholmen is the cheapest place to stay: housing and food prices there are lower than in the center. Södermalm also has plenty of budget options, with a concentration of hostels. Gamla Stan is the most expensive: there are few hotels and demand is high.

Is it noisy to stay overnight in Gamla Stan?

During the day the old town is crowded with tourists, but it gets calmer in the evening once the tour groups leave. Rooms facing inner courtyards are quieter than those on the main streets. If peace and quiet matters to you, pick a hotel on a side street rather than on Västerlånggatan.

How to get from Arlanda Airport to the hotel?

The Arlanda Express train takes 18 minutes from the airport to Central Station (as of 09/2026, verified on the carrier's website). Trains run every 12-15 minutes, and the ticket is valid for any departure. From the station you can walk to the hotels in Norrmalm.

Can you stay on a ship in Stockholm?

Yes. In Gamla Stan there is a hotel on a ship, more about it in the old town section (ship hotel page). Boat hotels are also located north of Södermalm. It's an unusual option, but popular dates should be booked in advance.

In short: what to book

Choosing a hotel in Stockholm depends on how you envision your trip. If you have little time and want to stay among the sights, go with Gamla Stan. For budget and quiet, head to Kungsholmen, for a trendy atmosphere to Södermalm, for nightlife to Östermalm. If the train station and Arlanda Express matter to you, Norrmalm is a good fit.
