Athens by season: when there are fewer tourists and the heat is not a problem

Athens welcomes visitors year-round, but the city changes a lot from month to month. In April it's around 20 °C during the day, in July above 33 °C, and in January it stays near 13 °C (as of 09/2026, Weather and Climate). The month determines how much you'll walk and how long you'll stand in line at the Acropolis entrance.

April, May, September, and October offer the best balance of weather, prices, and lines. In summer, Athens is hot and crowded, but the sea is nearby. In winter, you get museums without lines and cheap hotels, but the days are short and there's more rain. Below, we break down each season by the facts: Acropolis opening hours, free admission days, weather, and how busy the city is.

When Athens is most comfortable

💡 In short:

  • Best months for sightseeing: April, May, September, and October.
  • July and August work for the sea and evening walks, but not for long daytime routes.
  • From November to March there are almost no lines and prices are lower, but it rains more often.
  • Acropolis tickets and hours: 09/2026, verified on the official page of the Greek Ministry of Culture.

In spring and fall, daytime temperatures range from 20 to 28 °C, rain is rare, and the sky is clear most of the day (as of 09/2026, Weather and Climate). You'll appreciate this weather on long routes: the climb to the Acropolis, the descent into Plaka, the walk to Panathenaic Stadium.

April and May: soft sun and blooming hillsides

In April and May, daytime temperatures are 20-25 °C, and the sun shines about 10 hours a day (as of 09/2026, monthly averages). There are noticeably fewer tourists than in high season, so lines are short and you don't waste half a day waiting.

Start with the Acropolis: it's cool there in the morning, and the climb is easy.

Then head down to the Agora and Plaka, where the narrow streets provide shade. In the evening, walk to Philopappos Hill: from there you can see the entire Acropolis, and it's the best photo spot in the city.

September and October: warm sea and fewer people

In September, daytime temperatures are around 28 °C, in October around 22 °C, and the water along the Athenian Riviera stays warm enough for swimming (as of 09/2026, Weather and Climate). The days are still long, so you can combine city sightseeing and the beach.

A tram runs along the coast to Glyfada, taking about an hour from the center. Beyond that, only a bus goes to Vouliagmeni. In September, swimming is comfortable even in the evening; in October, it's better to head to the sea in the first half of the day.

In autumn, it's pleasant to wander through Anafiotika and Monastiraki: there are fewer guided groups than in summer, and tavernas operate as usual. Keep in mind that rain becomes more frequent in the second half of October, so it's worth setting aside one day for a museum.

  • Who it's for: those who want to walk a lot and also swim.
  • The catch: evenings are cool in April and October, so a light jacket will come in handy.

How July and August heat changes your trip

From mid-June, dry heat settles over Athens. In July and August, daytime temperatures are usually 33-35 °C, and on some days the air heats up above 40 °C (as of 09/2026, summer month data). Climbing the Acropolis in the middle of the day with no shade becomes an ordeal, especially with children.

How to plan your day in the heat

In summer, the Acropolis is open from 08:00 to 20:00, with the last entry at 19:30 (as of 09/2026, official Acropolis page). Aim for the first hour after opening or the last two hours before closing. In extreme heat, hours may change: current notices are posted on the same page, and it's worth checking them the day before your visit.

At midday, it makes sense to head to the sea. A tram runs from the center to Glyfada beach, and a bus goes to Vouliagmeni. The Aegean Sea is warm in summer, and entry to the city beaches is mostly free. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: you'll find almost no shelter from the sun up top.

In the evening, Athens shifts to a different schedule. Tavernas and bars fill up after sunset, and open-air summer cinemas operate in courtyards. It's convenient to structure your day like this: early morning at the monuments, sea and a nap in the afternoon, then a long walk and dinner in the evening.

Accommodation prices in July and August are higher than in May, so it's better to book a central hotel in advance. In the heat, a midday break helps: you return to your room, rest in the cool, and head out again in the evening.

  • Who it's for: those coming for the sea, evening walks, and nightlife.
  • Not for: families with small children and anyone who struggles with heat.
  • The catch: lines at the main monuments and higher accommodation prices.

Winter in Athens: almost no lines

From November to March, Athens is cool but frost-free. Daytime temperatures are usually 10-15 °C, and snow is rare and doesn't last long (as of 09/2026, Athens climate data). Rain is more frequent than in spring: December and January can have 9-10 rainy days per month. So bring an umbrella and waterproof shoes, and add museums to your plan.

In winter, the Acropolis is open from 08:00 to 17:00, with the last entry at 16:30 (as of 09/2026, winter Acropolis hours). Plan your visit for the first half of the day: the last entry is at 16:30, and after that you'll be left at the gate.

Check public holidays in advance. On January 1, March 25, May 1, and December 25-26, museums and monuments are closed (as of 09/2026, list of closure days on the official website).

On the plus side, there are almost no lines in winter. You can visit the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Benaki Museum, and the Museum of Cycladic Art at a relaxed pace, without crowds of tour groups. In Plaka and Monastiraki, ordinary city life goes on in winter: locals sit in tavernas, and the squares have fewer excursions.

Another winter plus: without foliage, the ancient walls are easier to see, and trees block the architecture less in photos. In some budget apartments, heating is billed separately, so read the booking terms carefully.

If you're coming to Athens for a short stay in December or January, plan two museum days and one for the Acropolis, and fit walks in between the rain.

  • Who it's for: museum lovers, people who enjoy quiet walks, and budget travelers.
  • The catch: short days and seasonal beach bars that are closed.

Acropolis tickets and opening hours

A full Acropolis ticket including its slopes costs 30 €, reduced 15 € (as of 09/2026, official page of the Greek Ministry of Culture). The ticket covers the entire archaeological complex, including the slopes of the hill.

What affects your choice of travel dates

There is no perfect month for everyone. Your choice depends on what you want from the trip: long walks, the sea, or museums.

Priorities: walks, sea, or museums

If you are going for antiquity, aim for spring and autumn. That is when it is comfortable to climb hills and do a lot of walking.

If you want to swim and still see the city, pick early June or late September: the peak heat has not arrived yet or has already eased, while the sea stays warm.

If collections and architecture are your main focus, choose winter. There are few people, museum tickets can be bought without rushing, and you can view the exhibits at your own pace.

Holidays and events

In summer, Athens hosts the Athens and Epidaurus Festival: concerts and performances at ancient open-air venues. In spring, the city revolves around Orthodox Easter, whose dates shift every year, and hotels get booked well in advance for those days. On October 28, Ohi Day, parades march through the center, and museum entry is free that day.

Important: before your trip, check the opening hours of the site you want to visit. In the low season and during extreme heat, schedules change, and updates are posted on the official website of the Greek Ministry of Culture and on museum pages.
