Where to stay in Tromso for the northern lights: 10 hotels and cabins

The northern lights in Tromsø can realistically be seen from September through March. The question isn't whether they'll appear, but where you'll be looking at the sky at midnight. The city center is convenient for tours and restaurants, but streetlights wash out the sky. Rural cabins and resorts on Senja, Kvaløya, and in Malangen offer dark skies, and sometimes a private hot tub on the terrace.

This list has ten options for different budgets: from glass igloos 40 minutes from Tromsø to fishermen's cabins in the Lyngen Alps. For each hotel, we've included directions and amenities.

Where to stay in Tromsø for the northern lights

The short answer depends on your travel style. If you want to walk around the center, book a hotel in Tromsø: you'll reach tours, the port, and restaurants in minutes. But city lights swallow faint auroras, so you probably won't see them from your room window.

If you want to improve your chances of seeing the lights with your own eyes, stay outside the city. Hotels on the fjord shore, lodges, and traditional cabins give you dark skies and a sense of wild nature, while the center is usually a short drive or bus ride away.

A separate category of accommodation includes glass igloos, Arctic domes, and resorts with panoramic windows. They were built specifically for aurora watching, so some hotels wake guests when the aurora appears above the horizon. Choose based on three factors: distance from Tromsø, the view from the window, and whether there's a hot tub.

💡 In short:

  • Tromsø center: convenient for tours and dinners, but light pollution interferes with the aurora;
  • rural cabins on Senja, Kvaløya, and in Lyngen: dark skies and hot tubs;
  • travel time from the center ranges from 5 minutes to 3 hours, some hotels offer shuttle service;
  • distances and hotel amenities: 09/2026, according to the Aera website, the Malangen Resort website, the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel website

1. Aera Glass Cabins

Each cabin has its own kitchenette and private bathroom, so you can cook dinner yourself and not depend on the kitchen schedule. The center of Tromsø is about 40 minutes away by car on the map: you get both quiet and proximity to the city.

The common area with a sauna, hot tub, and grill is open to all guests, and the snack bar serves hot drinks. You can order food in advance if you don't feel like cooking. Skis, fishing, snowshoes, and guided tours can be booked right at the front desk, so you can put together your itinerary on the spot. In the evening, the sauna and hot tub are waiting for you, so the day doesn't end in your room with your phone.

The property has an outdoor hot tub and sauna, and the restaurant prepares fresh fish and local dishes. • Who it's for: you're traveling with a group or family and want a kitchen, hot tub, and restaurant all in one place.

5. Norwegian Wild

Norwegian Wild sits on the shore on the island of Senja, about 2 hours and 45 minutes' drive from Tromsø on the map. This is an option for those who want to choose their price point: there are budget cabins with shared bathrooms as well as separate cabins with glass panels instead of windows. For families, they keep an old mill that you can stay in.

You'll need a car: without one, you won't get to Senja. On the plus side, the hotel has direct access to a ski trail, an outdoor fireplace, and a hot tub, and there's a playground for children. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and in the evening you can head down to the bar. The hotel is right by the water, so brave guests can take a dip in an ice hole.

The farm keeps horses, chickens, sheep, and rabbits, so guests with kids quickly find something to do.

Rooms and suites vary in price: there are budget options with a shared bathroom and upgraded ones with a sea view. Guests have access to a hot tub, sauna, and a panoramic terrace where yoga is held in the mornings. The city is less than an hour away, so restaurants and tours remain within reach.

The hotel is modern and requires no compromises: large rooms with a TV and a private shower in each. If you prefer to cook for yourself or are traveling with a big group, take a cabin with a living room and kitchen. The distance from the city works in your favor here: there are no city lights over the water.

The property has a restaurant, bar, and a wellness area with a sauna, so after a long walk on the beach you can warm up without going outside.

  • Location: about 50 minutes from Tromsø according to the hotel.

Some cabins have their own hot tub on the terrace.

Each house has its own kitchen, bathroom, and lounge area, so you're fully independent. The owners help arrange activities, from snowmobile tours to whiskey tastings at one of the world's northernmost distilleries.

  • Location: about a 2-hour drive from Tromsø on the map, Lyngseidet.
  • Who it's for: you want quiet, water right outside your window, and full independence from restaurants.

Shops and restaurants stay nearby, but outside your window it's already wild nature. All apartments were designed with large windows, so you can catch the aurora from your room.

Ski lovers will appreciate the slope access right from the house: gear can be rented on site. A shared hot tub and a children's playground are available to all guests. Accommodations vary: panoramic apartments with glass walls, a house for eight people, and a glass hut for sleeping under the stars. The largest rooms have a separate bathtub by the window.

Comparing hotels: driving distance, kitchen, and hot tub

Build a shortlist based on three factors: how far you're willing to drive from the city, whether you need a kitchen, and whether you want to warm up in a hot tub after a walk. Hotels with their own restaurant are more convenient in winter, when roads aren't cleared right away.

Can you see the northern lights from central Tromsø?

Yes, but city light pollution noticeably weakens the display. There are two spots in the city itself where your chances are higher: Telegrafbukta beach on the south side of the island and the Fjellheisen cable car, which takes you up to a viewing platform above the rooftops. From the platform you can see both the city and the sky over the fjord.

You'll find the cable car schedule and prices on the official Fjellheisen website. Arrive at opening time or after eight in the evening: in summer there are lines at the ticket office, while in winter the weather matters more than the hour. If the sky is overcast, going up won't do you any good.

Another option: an organized northern lights chase. A guide takes the group 2-4 hours out of the city and looks for a window of clear sky: this is often the only way to see the aurora on a cloudy night. Northern lights tours on GetYourGuide depart from the center, so a hotel in or near the city saves you time.

When to book a hotel in Tromsø

The winter season is short and packed. From November through February, rooms at popular hotels go first, and prices rise closer to the date. Book several months ahead if you want to choose your area and type of lodging.

Don't just look at the price, look at the cancellation policy too. Arctic weather can change within a day, so a flexible rate often pays off: you'll be able to move from a cloudy city to Senja or to the fjord where the sky is clear. Glass igloos and overwater cabins sell out earliest, so those should be booked as far in advance as possible.

How many nights you need to see the lights

According to local wisdom, three nights in Tromsø is enough for any visitor, because the city sits above the Arctic Circle. In practice, weather decides everything: cloud cover over the city can linger for a week, and then you won't see anything.

Northern lights over a quiet lake at night

So plan for at least three nights and keep one more in reserve. A countryside hotel with dark skies improves your chances without extra driving, and a hot tub or sauna makes a cloudy evening more enjoyable. If seeing the lights is the main goal of your trip, combine both options: a night in the city for tours and two or three nights outside the city.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Can you see the northern lights directly from your hotel in Tromsø?

Only from accommodation with large windows and no city light pollution. Aera Glass Cabins with its glass roof and Aurora Fjord Cabins with panoramic windows are the best fits. The lights do appear in central Tromsø too, but streetlights and neighboring windows wash out a weak aurora, and you risk sleeping through the peak of activity.

When does the northern lights season start in Tromsø?

The aurora is visible from late September to early April, when nights stay dark. The darkest weeks fall in November and December, while in February and March the darkness is joined by equinox activity. The dates when the lights appear shift, so check the activity and cloud cover forecast for your travel dates.

Do I need a car if I'm staying outside the city?

For Senja, Lyngen, and Kvaløya, a car is almost essential. Without one, you can realistically only reach Tromso Lodge and Camping, which has a bus connection, and Malangen Resort, which offers a transfer. Other hotels may have a shuttle, but only if booked in advance.

How many nights should I book in Tromsø?

Three nights is a sensible minimum, and four or five is better. Each additional night raises your chance of catching clear skies, since cloud cover here tends to stick around. A countryside hotel on Senja or in Lyngen gives you dark skies every night, even when clouds sit over the city.

Is it worth taking a northern lights tour if I'm staying outside the city?

Yes, if you want a more reliable chance of seeing the aurora. Guides track the forecast and drive to wherever the sky is clear, sometimes a hundred kilometers away. A countryside hotel can be a pickup point along the route, but it's best to confirm the route and departure time when you book your spot in the group.

In short: what to book

If you're short on time and don't have a car, go with Tromso Lodge and Camping: you're 5-10 minutes from central Tromsø, and in the evening you get away from the city lights. If your budget allows and you want to see the lights from bed, choose Aera Glass Cabins or Aurora Fjord Cabins with panoramic windows.

For a family with kids, Yggdrasiltunet Gårdshotell with its animals and Sommarøy Arctic Hotel with large rooms and beaches are more convenient. A group with a car should look at Malangen Resort with cottages and a kitchen, or Norwegian Wild with a range of price points. For quiet and water over two or three nights, XLyngen in the Lyngen Alps and Aurora Borealis Observatory on Senja fit well.
