Budapest is the only capital in Europe with the status of a balneological resort. Hot mineral water rises right within the city limits, and dozens of hotels are connected directly to the springs.

But there is a big difference between a "hotel with a spa" and a "hotel with a real thermal bath." In the first, you get a heated pool with a jacuzzi. In the second, you bathe in therapeutic water that rises from beneath the building. This distinction is almost invisible in a booking page.

From Liszt Ferenc Airport to the hotels on the Danube, it is more convenient to take a taxi or a pre-booked transfer. It is worth comparing transfer prices in advance so you do not have to look for a car on the spot.

Three districts cover different scenarios. Buda and Margaret Island suit those who want quiet and greenery. Central Pest is advantageous if you plan to visit museums, restaurants, and baths on foot. The northern outskirts and the Buda Hills are convenient for families with children and those traveling by car.

The hotel stands on the bank of the Danube in Buda, near Árpád Bridge. The main reason to choose it: a thermal complex with two pools right in the building (according to the hotel, 09/2026). The pools come with a spa salon and a lounge bar.

The rooms are decorated in a classic style. They do not shine with newness, but they are clean and have the full set of everyday details you expect from a good city hotel. Guests particularly praise the gym, the open terrace, and the garden; the fitness center, solarium, and sauna are available for an extra charge.

Nearby there are tram, bus, and suburban rail stops, from which you can reach any attraction. There are several restaurants with Hungarian cuisine in the neighborhood. The buffet breakfast is large, with no complaints about the selection of dishes.

The hotel occupies a historic 19th-century building in an eclectic style. Inside, you are greeted by a palatial atrium with a glass ceiling, gilding, and stucco. This is where people come for breakfast at New York Café, one of the city's landmarks.

The restorers managed to preserve the historic facade and original interiors. The elegant rooms, suites, and apartments are done in coffee tones, with windows overlooking the boulevard or the atrium.

Guests have access to three restaurants serving Hungarian, Far Eastern, and international cuisine (according to the hotel, 09/2026). Breakfast in the lavish dining room feels like a museum visit, and the spread ranges from fried eggs to champagne. The cafe serves homemade pies, and the lobby bar features live piano music.

5. Danubius Hotel Gellert

The hotel opened in 1918 in a luxurious art nouveau building at the foot of Gellert Hill, next to the famous thermal baths. We kept it on the list because the property is coming back: the restoration follows heritage preservation rules.

The hotel is currently closed for renovation. It closed in December 2021, and reopening is planned for 2027 (as of 09/2026, CNN). The Gellert Baths operate separately from the hotel and are also closed: from October 1, 2025 until roughly 2028 (verified 09.2026 on the official baths website).

While the renovation is underway, head to the Szechenyi or Lukacs Baths for thermal bathing. We will return to this hotel when it reopens and update the section.

Even seasoned travelers consider this complex one of the best of its kind. The hotel sits outside the city limits, not far from the ring highway, on a large landscaped property. The main draw is the huge water park and thermal pools, but the clean rooms in several categories also play their part.

The resort works for both adults and children. There is a separate kids' buffet and apartments with a kitchen if you want to cook yourself. Fresh groceries are sold at a supermarket a seven-minute walk away (per the map).

Most reviews focus on the water park and the outdoor thermal pool with a water slide. Guests are happy with the gym, spa, and sauna. The kids' club runs an entertainment program, and there is a playroom, playground, and bike rental.

The hotel has 267 rooms in total (as of 09/2026, Ensana). According to guest reviews, bathing in the thermal pools is energizing and improves well-being. Amenities include a gym, table tennis, and bike rental for riding along the park paths.

The hotel is located in the western part of the city, in a quiet outlying area at the foot of Sashegy Hill. Built in a semicircle shape, it is surrounded by the greenery of its own park. The interiors are modern, and the rooms and apartments are spacious, with a balcony or patio.

In the mornings, the Amaretto restaurant serves a hot European buffet breakfast. The bar offers grilled dishes, snacks, pastries, and drinks. The wellness center provides a wide selection of spa treatments. For staying active, horseback riding, golf, bowling, fitness, and aqua aerobics are available. The hotel is housed in a historic mansion in the center, next to Liberty Square. The interiors are modern: flowing lines, cream tones, contrasting fabrics, and bright photo wallpapers.

The hotel occupies a 19th-century building, just a three-minute walk from Margaret Bridge, one of the city's oldest bridges. The rooms are decorated in a modern style, with a homey feel.

A serious advantage is the proximity to a sports swimming center: guests have access to outdoor pools, including 50- and 25-meter ones (per the hotel, 09/2026). There are several accommodation options, ranging from 28 to 68 square meters (per the hotel, 09/2026). Double rooms are in the main building, with a kitchenette and a balcony overlooking the Buda Hills. The wooden chalets for 4-6 people have a full kitchen, a Finnish sauna, and a spacious terrace.

Budapest thermal waters: what you need to know

The healing properties of the hot springs here were known two thousand years ago. The Romans, who ruled this region, built baths for the nobility. This is confirmed by excavations of ancient Aquincum, where more than twenty thermal baths were found.

In the Middle Ages, especially in the 15th century, thermal baths became an important part of Buda's development. The royal Rác Baths survive from that era. The Turks also invested heavily during their 150 years of rule in Hungary: the Rudas and Király Baths in Buda became symbols of their reign.

Thermal water is not unique to Budapest. Eger also has a bath built by the Turks. The country's most famous thermal lake is Hévíz: a balneological resort grew up around it, attracting Germans, Austrians, and Swiss visitors.

The water rises to the surface and mixes with karst deposits, becoming saturated with minerals. The sulfur and carbon dioxide content makes the water medicinal and bicarbonate-rich. Bathing is used for chronic joint and spine conditions, as well as neuralgia.

Some springs are used as medicinal table water for drinking. Hunyadi János, Mira, Parádi, Salvus, and Ferenc József contain magnesium, calcium, and fluoride. Drinking it is recommended for stomach and intestinal conditions, in small sips and on an empty stomach.

There are also contraindications. Acute inflammation, ulcers, heart failure, tuberculosis, and tumors make drinking the water and hot baths dangerous.
