Karlovy Vary sanatoriums with treatment: how to choose a profile and how much it costs

Karlovy Vary is built around thirteen thermal springs. The main one, Vřídlo, shoots a jet of water almost 12 meters high (as of 09/2026, official resort website). The water temperature in the springs ranges from 30 to 72 °C (as of 09/2026, resort guide).

The resort treats the stomach, metabolism, and musculoskeletal system, and it has been doing so for centuries. People come here not for the beach but for treatments: drinking courses, baths, mud therapy, massages. Karlovy Vary (formerly Karlsbad) has held its reputation as a therapeutic resort for centuries. As far back as the 18th century, Peter the Great tried the local mineral waters on himself. Turgenev wrote the novella "Asya" under the impression of Karlsbad.

The town sits in the valley of the Teplá River, where water emerges from springs with different compositions and temperatures. Local therapeutic mud complements the water treatments. The resort has preserved a measured, aristocratic atmosphere: clean, calm, and full of walking paths along the colonnades.

Fans of Becherovka liqueur jokingly call it the 14th spring. Besides treatment, there are excursions, exhibitions, concerts, and shopping along the river.

The practical difference between sanatoriums is not in the stars but in two things: where the building stands relative to the spring and what is included in the treatment program. The upper town with its hillside hotels is more scenic, but you get to the water by funicular or walk uphill. The lower center near the Mill Colonnade is more convenient for a daily drinking course.

The hotel has five stars and stands in the very center of the resort and wellness zone. Excellent treatment facilities are combined with first-class service. The rooms were recently renovated and the furniture updated. The hotel stands in the center of Karlovy Vary with its own grounds and a cozy garden for walks. The spa complex offers guests a traditional range of services. Elegant rooms are located in a late 19th-century building, with the entire interior done in a classic style. The city's main attractions and a thermal spring are within walking distance. Two restaurants serve international cuisine, and dietary meals can be arranged.

This used to be three separate hotels that were merged a few years ago. Guests now have access to 360 rooms of varying comfort levels. The main advantage is its own balneotherapy center with an indoor pool, hot tub, saunas, fitness center, and beauty salon.

The four-star Imperial has one of the largest and most modern treatment facilities. It stands in a picturesque spot on a hill. The complex consists of two buildings: the main building, which resembles a medieval castle, and the spacious Hoffman villa.

The main treatment focus in Karlovy Vary is natural mineral springs. They belong to the bicarbonate-chloride-sulfate-sodium type and differ from each other in temperature and carbon dioxide concentration. The other components are present in roughly equal amounts. Thanks to this composition, the local waters are considered among the most effective in the world for drinking and balneotherapy.

Treatment here is not built on a single procedure but on a combination: a drinking course, water treatments, massages, and physical therapy. The program is always prescribed by a doctor after an examination. Below we break down what exactly spa treatment includes.

Thermal mineral water treatment

Drinking courses of Karlovy Vary thermal waters are used to treat gastrointestinal conditions. The rich chemical composition of the spring water affects not only the stomach and intestines but the entire body.

Hydrotherapy
