Sanatoriums of Jurmala: where they treat with mud and mineral water

Jūrmala is known as a resort destination on the Gulf of Riga. People come here for more than just the beach. Treatment here uses therapeutic mud, mineral water and pine forest air, and it follows medical protocols.

According to the Jūrmala tourism office (as of 09/2026, official list of centers), the city has five rehabilitation centers and medical resorts: the national rehabilitation center Vaivari, the SIVA center, the Jaunķemeri resort rehabilitation center, Baltic Beach Hotel & SPA, and Clinic Dzintari in Melluži. Older sanatoriums are not on this list: they are located in Ķemeri and near the Dzintari concert hall.

Let's go through them one by one: what they treat, how the centers differ, and how to choose a program.

What they treat in Jūrmala

💡 In short:

  • They treat the musculoskeletal system, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, skin, and metabolism.
  • The core of the treatment is therapeutic mud, mineral and gas baths, and the pine forest climate.

The list of indications at local centers is broad. It includes heart and vascular diseases, respiratory tract conditions, musculoskeletal disorders, skin conditions, and digestive issues (as of 09/2026, list of indications). Neurology, gynecology, urology, metabolic disorders, and care for elderly patients are listed separately. Rehabilitation courses are offered after COVID-19 and after cancer treatment. Each center has its own set of procedures.

All of the resort's health facilities are located on the Baltic coast. Some are tucked away in pine forests, and for respiratory treatment that matters more than the stars on the sign. Inside you'll find restaurants, cafes, parking, beauty salons, concert halls and cinemas. In the evening you're not walking into a hospital corridor but into a resort town with fairs and festivals.

Jaunķemeri

The Jaunķemeri resort rehabilitation center is located in the dune zone. It is surrounded by pine forest, with small lakes around the perimeter. The program here is put together individually, based on your diagnosis and goals, not handed out from a template.

The course is built on natural factors. They use mineral baths with hydrogen sulfide and bromide water, naphthalan-hydrogen sulfide baths, sapropel mud applications, and inhalations. Hardware-based methods are used alongside: magnets, laser, ultrasound. Dental services are also on the list (as of 09/2026, center listing in the tourism office list).

This is where peloid therapy is still done the old way: therapeutic mud is added directly to a bath of warm hydrogen sulfide mineral water (as of 09/2026, tourism office page on mud therapy). The mud is heated before the procedure and kept on the skin only briefly, so peloid therapy is prescribed as a series.

The center's facilities include a hydromassage pool with underwater spinal traction, functional diagnostics rooms, mechanotherapy, physical therapy, and dry massage. For children with hyperactivity there is an occupational therapy program, and horseback riding is used as hippotherapy. You can come for outpatient treatment or a day hospital stay. The infrastructure covers leisure: a cascade pool with a sauna, a concert hall and cinema, a beauty salon, a solarium, a bar and cafe, and excursions. Facilities are accessible for wheelchair users, and there are dedicated rehabilitation programs for seniors.

  • Who it's for: you need a full rehabilitation course, not a short spa weekend.
  • Not for: if you only want a massage and a pool for two days, book a hotel in Majori.
  • Location: dunes and pine forest, a few minutes' walk to the sea.
  • Price: consider the package as a whole, accommodation plus procedures; you can compare options on Trip.com.
  • The catch: mud treatments are not done during flare-ups, for cancer patients, or when you have a high fever.

Jantarnij Bereg

Jantarnij Bereg is called one of the oldest health resorts in Latvia. The six-story main building and a cottage with premium-category rooms stand on the grounds of Ķemeri National Park. The property has a sauna with a pool, volleyball and tennis courts, a billiards club, a gym, and a movie theater. The beach is nearby and belongs to the sanatorium, so after your treatments you step out almost directly to the sea.

The programs here are narrow and clear: post-operative eye rehabilitation, body shaping, and wellness rejuvenation. Diagnostics are done before prescriptions, and treatments are selected for these three areas. This sanatorium is not on the current list of the Jūrmala tourist office, so check arrival dates directly with the center.

  • Who it's for: you value the quiet of the forest and a measured pace of treatment.
  • Not for: if you want evening city life, you'll have to travel to central Jūrmala.
  • Location: Ķemeri National Park, a couple of minutes' walk to the beach.
  • Price: the level of a sanatorium package in Ķemeri, rates depend on the season; check accommodation on Trip.com.

Belorusija

Belorusija stands in central Jūrmala, next to the Dzintari concert hall. From the street it's urban development, while on the other side a pine forest on sandy dunes comes right up to the buildings. Inside there is a sauna, a Turkish bath, an infrared cabin, a mechanical massage room, and an indoor pool with mineral water.

It's easier here with children than at most health resorts. There's a playroom for them, the library has a children's section, and discounts apply to accommodation and treatment. Adults still get a gym, sports grounds, a court, a movie theater, and a library.

This sanatorium is not on the current list of the Jūrmala tourist office (as of 09/2026, list of centers). Check arrival dates and programs directly with the center.

  • Who it's for: you need a sanatorium in the center, with a pool and child-friendly facilities.
  • Not for: if you're looking for the quiet of a national park, there's a concert hall and city life nearby.
  • Location: central Jūrmala, a few minutes' walk to the shore of the Gulf of Riga.
  • Price: the level of a city sanatorium near Dzintari, rates depend on the season; look for accommodation on Trip.com.

Hotels, guesthouses, and bed and breakfasts

Not everyone needs a course of treatment. If you just want to live by the sea, Jūrmala has plenty of guesthouses and B&Bs, and they cost noticeably less than a sanatorium.

Pensija Jomas occupies a house on the pedestrian Jomas iela, not far from Majori Beach. Guests note the cleanliness, comfort, and convenient location. Guest house Naiza is a garden with a picnic area, a cottage with clean rooms, its own kitchen, and free Wi-Fi. You can walk to central Majori with its attractions.

From the official list for accommodation, Baltic Beach Hotel & SPA and Hotel Jūrmala SPA are suitable, and Clinic Dzintari operates at the clinic in Melluži (as of 09/2026, official accommodation list).

Natural healing factors

Treatment in Jūrmala rests on three things: mineral water, mud, and amber sand. Water from local springs is divided by composition, and each center uses its own set. In the official list of treatments you'll see bromine, hydrogen sulfide, and gas baths, a Charcot shower, and underwater massage (as of 09/2026, official list of treatments).

Therapeutic peat for the resort is extracted from a bog near Lake Slokas, on the grounds of Ķemeri National Park. The mud is applied to joints, and after the procedure you're advised to rest indoors. The effect accumulates, so peloid therapy is prescribed as a course of treatments.

Local sources also include sapropel mud, which is part of the health resorts' arsenal. Amber sand is considered a separate treatment.

Wellness programs

Programs in Jurmala are updated every season. Classic courses are combined with new methods, and dentistry and prosthetics form a separate track. You can get treatment year-round: in winter you get procedures without queues, and in summer the beach and concert evenings are added.

There are also restrictions. The resort is not recommended during flare-ups of chronic conditions, oncology, and infectious diseases, and mud treatments are not done after a stroke or with a high fever. For women in late pregnancy, doctors advise choosing a program without mud treatments.

For leisure, the city has bowling, billiards, karaoke cafes, restaurants, and bars. Add to that the festivals and concerts that bring people to Jurmala even without treatment.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Where in Jurmala do they treat with mud?

Peloid therapy is still offered at the Jaunķemeri rehabilitation center. The therapeutic peat is sourced from a bog near Lake Slokas, and the bath is filled with hydrogen sulfide mineral water. The full list of procedures is kept by the Jurmala tourist office (as of 09/2026, official list).

How much does treatment at a Jurmala sanatorium cost?

The price is made up of accommodation and procedures, so a package is always more expensive than a regular room at a spa hotel. There are no ready-made rates without a request: the cost depends on the season, room category, and length of the course. Calculate the cost of the entire course, not just one night.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

The program is put together on site after diagnostics: the centers have functional diagnostics and a day hospital. If you arrive with a ready-made program from your own doctor, it is usually adjusted to local methods. For a course with mud treatments, a medical check-up before the procedures is mandatory.

When is the best time to go to Jurmala for treatment?

The resort operates year-round. In summer you get the beach and concerts in Dzintari as a bonus. For post-surgery recovery, it is calmer to choose the off-season.

Can I come with a child?

Yes, some centers are family-oriented. At Belorusija there is a playroom and discounts for children. At Jaunķemeri there is an occupational therapy program for hyperactive children and horseback riding sessions.

In short: what to book

The choice depends on the length of the course and your goals. If you want a full rehabilitation course with mud treatments, go with Jaunķemeri. If you prefer the quiet of the national park and a classic sanatorium, Jantarnij Bereg in Ķemeri is a good fit. If you are traveling as a family and want a pool in the city center, look at Belorusija near Dzintari. For a simple seaside getaway, head to the guesthouses and boarding houses of Majori.
