Dresden Christmas markets 2026: seven locations, dates and opening hours

Dresden Christmas markets 2026: seven locations, dates and opening hours

Dresden in December brings together seven Christmas markets within the old town. The main one, Dresdner Striezelmarkt on Altmarkt, runs from November 25 to December 24, 2026, daily from 10:00 to 21:00 (as of 09/2026, official Striezelmarkt website).

Almost all the markets are on the south bank of the Elbe, and only Augustusmarkt awaits you across the bridge, in Neustadt. The squares are about ten minutes apart on foot, so you can cover most of them in one evening.

This guide saves you from searching on the spot: below are the dates and hours of each market, addresses, distances, and links to official websites so you can check before your trip.

What to know about Dresden's markets

💡 In short:

  • Old Town markets open November 25-27 and close December 22-24.
  • Augustusmarkt runs the longest, until January 3, 2027.
  • Weekdays during the day are quieter; evenings and weekends draw the biggest crowds.
  • Bring cash: some stalls don't accept cards.
  • Market dates and hours: 09/2026, verified on the official website.

Most markets open in late November and run until December 24, that is, Christmas Eve. Only Augustusmarkt keeps its stalls open until early January. If a market stays open after Christmas, it is usually closed or has reduced hours on December 24 and 31: check the official website for the exact schedule.

Stalls open around 10-11 in the morning, but the market truly comes alive at dusk, when the lights go on. That's also when the biggest crowds arrive. Weekends are more packed than weekdays, so aim for midweek if you want to take photos without the crowds.

Bring cash: some stalls don't accept cards, and some markets charge a small entrance fee. Hot drinks are served in mugs with a refundable deposit. Return the mug and you get your money back, or keep one you like as a souvenir.

1. Dresdner Striezelmarkt at Altmarkt

Dresdner Striezelmarkt is the main and oldest Christmas market in Dresden. It was first mentioned in 1434, and today more than 200 stalls operate at Altmarkt (as of 09/2026, market website). The square was heavily damaged in World War II and was rebuilt.

The market is open from November 25 through December 24, 2026, daily from 10:00 to 21:00; address: Altmarkt in the Old Town.

In December, Altmarkt transforms completely. Each stall is decorated in its own way: bottles of mulled wine, moving figurines, and Christmas wreaths hang above the counters. At the entrance stands a huge Christmas pyramid that made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 1999 (as of 09/2026, organizer's page).

The selection here is the widest in the city. Vendors sell carved wooden figurines, nutcrackers, ceramics, and ornaments. For food, you'll find grilled sausages, elk burgers, pulled pork sandwiches, empanadas, Rahmbrot (filled bread), and Dresden Christmas stollen.

The best view of the market from above is from the balcony of the library across the square. You can also climb the Kreuzkirche tower in the corner of the square for a small fee.

  • Who it's for: if you want to see the city's largest and oldest market.
  • The catch: it gets very crowded in the evening and on weekends, so come at opening time or on a weekday.

2. Frauenkirche: markets at Neumarkt and Münzgasse

Two Christmas markets operate around Frauenkirche, and both are open from November 25 to December 24, 2026, daily from 10:00 to 21:00 (as of 09/2026, official site of the markets at Frauenkirche).

The larger one, Advent at Neumarkt, is made up of stalls that recreate the look of century-old fairs. Here you'll find handmade goods: ceramics, glass, lace, and quality food from various cuisines. Weihnachtsmann comes here every day at set times; the schedule is posted on the website.

The second market, Münzgasse, is smaller and runs along a street lined with restaurants and eateries. It has its own selection of treats and is marked by a Christmas pyramid with wooden figurines. Together, these two spots create a festive atmosphere in one of the most beautiful corners of Dresden.

  • Who it's for: if you want two market areas and good food in one place.
  • Not for: if you're only looking for souvenirs, the selection is more modest than at Striezelmarkt.

3. Stallhof: medieval market

The medieval market occupies the Stallhof courtyard at Residenzschloss, Dresden's castle. Knights' tournaments were once held here, and now tents are set up once a year. The market runs from November 25 to December 23, 2026, daily from 11:00 to 21:30 (as of 09/2026, medieval market website).

The stalls are built to look like castles, taverns, and tents, with flags fluttering above them, and the vendors wear historical costumes. Here you can eat hearty food and drink spiced mead. The shops sell drinking horns, toy swords, and traditional clothing.

The quietest time here is right after opening; closer to evening, the crowd grows noticeably larger.

Jugglers and musicians perform throughout the day, and at the archery range you can try shooting a bow.

  • Who it's for: if you're interested in history and don't mind the historical setting.
  • The catch: it's crowded in the evening, and the courtyard space is small.

4. Romantic Christmas Market

Romantic Christmas Market is small and sits south of Residenzschloss, next to Striezelmarkt. It's also a couple of minutes' walk from Stallhof. The market is open from November 27 to December 24, 2026 (as of 09/2026, Romantic Christmas Market website).

There are about ten stalls here, and they sell traditional Christmas goods. The baroque facades around set the atmosphere. This isn't a market worth making a special trip for, but you'll likely walk past it while strolling through the Old Town.

  • The catch: it's a small market, so you won't make a special trip for it.

5. Augustusmarkt: international market

Augustusmarkt is located across Augustusbrücke, in Neustadt, and stretches along Hauptstraße between Neustädter Markt and Albertplatz. It's about 500 meters long and is Dresden's second-largest Christmas market (as of 09/2026, augustusmarkt.de).

The market is named after Augustus the Strong. His golden statue stands at the entrance, a Ferris wheel spins nearby, and a row of white pagoda-style stalls with golden garlands leads toward Albertplatz. The food here is international, so in one evening you can try dishes from different countries.

Augustusmarkt stays open longer than the others, from November 25, 2026 to January 3, 2027, but it's closed on December 24-26 and January 1. Compared to the Old Town, it's calmer here, though the decor is also more modest.

  • Who it's for: if you're visiting after Christmas or want international cuisine.
  • The catch: if you're short on time, you can skip this market.

6. Finn Village Market

Finn Village Market is very small and cozy, with just a few stalls. It serves Finnish food: flammlachs, glögi, a gin bar, two shops with Finnish products, plus a heated tent and an enclosed area with fur blankets. The market is open from November 26 to December 22, 2026, daily from 12:00 to 21:00, with longer hours Thursday through Saturday (as of 09/2026, finnvillage.de).

Address: Dr.-Külz-Ring next to Altmarkt-Galerie. The quality here is a step above the street stalls, and it's a calm place to warm up after walking the markets.

  • Who it's for: if you want to sit quietly in the warmth with Finnish snacks.
  • The catch: the market is very small and quiet, there's no lively fair atmosphere here.

7. Winterlights of Dresden

Winterlights of Dresden is on Prager Straße, the city's main shopping street. The market is open from November 25 to December 23, 2026 (as of 09/2026, dresdner-winterlichter.de).

It has the usual food and gift stalls and a small ice rink. If you have a free evening, you can stop by; it's not worth setting aside time specifically for it.

  • The catch: apart from the rink and standard stalls, there's little that stands out.

How to get around Dresden

Dresden is compact, and you can walk between the Old Town markets: from Altmarkt to Neumarkt is about ten minutes on foot (per the map). To get to Neustadt and Augustusmarkt, it's easier to take the tram or walk across Augustusbrücke. It's best to leave your car at the hotel in the center: parking is paid and often full.

How much time you need for the markets

One day is enough to cover the main markets and see a couple of sights. In that time you can visit Striezelmarkt, the market at Frauenkirche, Stallhof, and the Romantic Christmas Market. There will be almost no time left for Zwinger, Residenzschloss, or climbing the tower.

Two days is enough to see all seven markets and the city itself. Dresden is small, the center is walkable, and the tram helps save time getting to Neustadt.

Where to stay in Dresden

During the market season, it's most convenient to stay between Altmarkt and Neumarkt. From there you can walk to five markets, and you won't have to figure out transport in the evening.

All five options are within walking distance of the main venues, so you'll be back at your hotel in a few minutes in the evening.

Where to start: a one-evening itinerary

If you only have one evening, start at Striezelmarkt while it's still light. After sunset, head to Neumarkt and Frauenkirche, then walk to Stallhof and finish at the Romantic Christmas Market. That way you'll see the markets both in daylight and in the evening lights.

On the second day, go to Neustadt and Augustusmarkt. Finn Village and Winterlights are in the Old Town, at Dr.-Külz-Ring and on Prager Straße. They're off the route to Neustadt, so visit them separately. This way you'll cover all seven markets without rushing.

Keep in mind that the squares get more crowded on weekends. Plan your walk for a weekday if you want to take photos without crowds.
