From Vienna to Salzburg: Melk, the fortress, and ice

On the way from Vienna, it is worth making a stop in Melk. The abbey is open from March 28 to November 1, 2026, visiting hours are 9:00 to 17:30, last entry at 17:00 (as of 09/2026, Melk Abbey website). Adult admission costs 16.00 €, and a tour of the state rooms adds 4.00 €.

In Salzburg itself, the first thing to see is Hohensalzburg Fortress on Festungsberg mountain. The funicular ride up takes a few minutes. The Panorama ticket only allows entry from 8:30 to 10:00 and from 18:00 to 20:00, which suits those who arrive early or stay until evening.
