Greece in May: where it is warm, what is open and what to book in advance

In May, Greece eases into the season, without the July heat and without the summer crowds at the sights. Daytime temperatures in Athens are around 24 °C, and the lines at the Acropolis are still short (as of 09/2026, Athens climate).

The picture varies more by region than it seems: Corfu is cooler and rainier, Crete and Rhodes are warmer, and the Cyclades are windier. Below is a weather table, five regions with specifics, and practical sections for packing and booking.

Weather in Greece in May

💡 In short:

  • Daytime temperatures in Athens are around 24 °C, in Corfu around 22 °C (as of 09/2026, Corfu climate).
  • The sea stays around 18-19 °C, warmest in Crete and Rhodes (as of 09/2026, sea in May).
  • The sun shines 9-10 hours a day, rain falls 3-6 days per month (as of 09/2026, sunshine hours in Athens).

May works as a compromise between spring and the dry season. The air has already warmed up, the sea is still refreshing, and the beaches are half empty. Below are average figures for four regions.

Climate models Meteoblue are based on 30 years of observations, so any single day can easily deviate from the table, and the week-ahead forecast before you travel matters more than the averages.

The south warms up fastest: Crete, Rhodes, and the southern Peloponnese, while Corfu and the northern Aegean have colder water, so you go in briefly and get out quickly.

Rain in May is short and localized, mostly in the afternoon. You will get wet once and dry off within an hour, and a light jacket and umbrella weigh little and save you in the evening.

The sun is already strong in May: 9 to 10 hours a day (as of 09/2026, Athens sunshine archive). Bring high-SPF sunscreen and do not schedule a long walk for the afternoon.

Rain and wind by region

The wind blows almost every day in the Cyclades. It takes the edge off the heat and kicks up waves on exposed beaches. Rhodes and Crete have less wind, but short downpours do happen.

In Athens, rain is rare and ends quickly. Corfu and the Peloponnese get more precipitation, so plan a half-day backup option in advance.

The weather in May is generally mild. The main argument for going now is not the climate, but the empty cities and low prices.

Why you should go in May

In May, Greece lives at a relaxed pace. The beaches of Crete and the Peloponnese are uncrowded, you do not need to book a table at tavernas, and there is plenty of room at viewpoints.

You save on accommodation and flights. Hotel prices have not yet climbed to July levels, and there are more rooms available. Check flights to Greece on Kiwi.com early: in May there are more cheap dates than in peak season.

Sights operate on their regular schedule. Archaeological sites, museums, and ferries are open, and the summer lines have not formed yet. Sports are available too: diving, snorkeling, and paddleboarding are offered on almost all the islands.

Daylight hours are long. You can fit in both a morning beach and an evening in the city, and dinner on the waterfront stretches late into the night. Bring one sweater: it gets cool by the sea at night.

Athens: the Acropolis and the city without the heat

Athens in May is comfortable for walking. Daytime temperatures are around 24 °C, so the climb to the Acropolis does not turn into an ordeal, and in the morning you will get through the entrance faster than in July.

Start with the Acropolis and the Parthenon on the hill above the city, and Acropolis tickets with a time slot on Tiqets will help you pick a convenient time and skip the ticket office line.

The Acropolis Museum sits at the foot of the hill. After that, head down to Monastiraki: the flea market runs during the day, haggling is acceptable, and souvenirs are cheaper than near the main entrances.

From the center to the Acropolis entrance you can walk in 20 minutes (on the map). Bring water and do not schedule the climb for midday.

Cyclades: Santorini and Mykonos

In the Cyclades you will see white houses, blue domes, and open sea. Santorini offers caldera views from Oia and Fira, while Mykonos is louder: beaches, music, and nightlife.

May is good because the beaches are uncrowded and ferries run on schedule. In May, it is better to swim in sheltered bays where there is no wind.

Want to catch the sunset without the crowds? Get to Oia early, before sunset. In May there is plenty of space at the viewpoints.

Hotels on the islands get booked up quickly, so reserve in advance. Check out hotels in the Cyclades on Trip.com.

Crete: Knossos and the Samaria gorge

Crete takes a full week if you want to see the mountains, the beaches, and the archaeological sites. In May the island is still green and the beaches are empty, so you can cover a lot of ground.

Knossos near Heraklion opens up Minoan culture: the palace, the frescoes, and the maze of excavations. In Heraklion itself, visit the Archaeological Museum, which houses the main finds from the palace.

The Samaria Gorge operates seasonally, usually from early May (as of 09/2026, official park website). Before hiking, check the dates and rules, and wear sturdy shoes.

On the west side of the island lies Elafonisi with pink sand and lagoons. The easiest way to get there is by car or on a tour. Tours to Knossos and the Samaria Gorge on GetYourGuide take care of the transportation question.

Rhodes: the old town and Lindos

Rhodes combines a medieval town with long beaches. The old town is surrounded by walls, you can wander around it all day, and in the evening it is lit up.

Lindos sits on a cliff above the bay, and a steep climb leads from the village to the acropolis (about 2 km, per the map). It is better to go up in the morning before it gets hot.

The Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) is open in the warm season. Go there in the first half of the day; by midday it gets crowded.

In May the water around Rhodes is already comfortable, and the beaches are uncrowded. Check out Rhodes hotels on Trip.com in advance: the island is popular with families.

Other islands worth considering

Besides the main destinations, smaller islands are also up and running in May. Corfu in the west turns green earlier than the rest, with more rain and milder air.

Navagio Beach with white cliffs and a shipwreck

Zakynthos offers Navagio Beach with cliffs and turquoise water, reached by boat from the port. On Milos, make sure to see Sarakiniko, the white rock formations by the sea.

Karpathos and Chios suit those looking for quiet. Naxos and Samos are good for hiking, and Skiathos works well for a short beach getaway.

On the islands, you are better off renting a car: buses run infrequently, and parking near the beaches is usually easy to find.

What to do in May

In May, the beach, the trail, and the ancient sites are all equally good. Choose based on the weather and do not try to pack everything into one day.

Beaches and swimming

Elafonisi on Crete, Navagio on Zakynthos, and Sarakiniko on Milos are worth a separate trip. The water in May is cool, but there are few people.

After the cold entry, your body adjusts and you swim longer. Keep a towel in the sun, you will need it in the evening.

Hiking and nature

The Samaria Gorge on Crete, the Vikos Gorge in Epirus, and Mount Olympus in the north are open for hiking. In May the trails are green, and the heat does not yet get in the way of walking during the day.

Bring trekking poles and a supply of water. On long routes, shade is rare, and kiosks do not operate everywhere.

Antiquity without the crowds

History is easy to divide by region. In Athens, see the Acropolis; on the Peloponnese, Olympia; on Crete, Knossos.

In May you can cover the sites without the summer crush.

How many days to allow for each region depends on your pace.

What to take with you to Greece

The basics for May are simple: light clothing during the day and a jacket in the evening.

What to pack

  • T-shirts, shorts, and light dresses.
  • High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a cap.
  • Swimsuit, towel, and sandals.
  • A jacket or sweater for the evening.
  • Comfortable sneakers for walking and hiking.
  • First aid kit: painkillers, insect bite treatment, and stomach medication.

Safety precautions

The sun in May is deceptively strong. You will burn faster than you expect, so reapply sunscreen regularly.

Drink water while walking and do not carry a heavy backpack on climbs. If you take medication, bring a supply for the entire trip.

From our travel experience: a virtual SIM card is more convenient than roaming. Get connected with Yesim before your flight and without visiting a store.

Public holidays

The public holiday calendar in May is short. In 2026, Orthodox Easter fell on April 12, so there is only one day off in the month: May 1. Pentecost falls on May 31, and the non-working Monday after it is June 1 (as of 09/2026, Visit Greece).

On May 1, museums and archaeological sites often change their schedules, so check opening hours in advance on the Greek ticket portal.

Festivals and city events

The cultural program in May is packed. The Medieval Rose Festival takes place in the old town of Rhodes, the open-air concert season opens in Athens, and summer art projects kick off on Mykonos.

The Kalamata Dance Festival has moved to summer: in 2026 it runs from July 17 to 26 (as of 09/2026, festival official website). Check the event listings for your region before you travel, and confirm exact dates on site.

For Pentecost, Greeks travel to visit relatives. Book ferries and hotels for these dates in advance.

Greece and Spain in May

Spain wins on nightlife and beaches. In May, popular coasts are already busy, and bars stay open until morning.

Greece responds with antiquity and water. Swimming in May is more comfortable on Crete and Rhodes than at the northern resorts of Spain.

Tickets and opening hours: what to book in advance

In May, most sites operate without restrictions. The rules are simple.

Major ancient monuments sell timed tickets, and the Acropolis ticket also includes several other Athens sites (as of 09/2026, official slot sales).

Buy tickets only on the official portal or from verified partners. Resellers add a fee and do not always provide a slot.

Book ferries to the islands in advance too. Over long weekends, available spots run out faster than you expect.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

Can you swim in Greece in May?

Yes, but comfort depends on the region. The sea stays around 18-19 °C (as of 09/2026, water temperature in May). On Crete and Rhodes the water is warmer, while on Corfu it is cooler. Kids swim briefly, adults go in twice a day if they like cool water.

Do you need a time slot for the Acropolis?

In high season, yes, a time slot is mandatory. Tickets with entry intervals are sold online: Acropolis tickets online. In May, lines are shorter than in summer, but morning is still more convenient, so arrive 15 minutes before your selected time.

What should you bring to Greece in May?

Light clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, a cap, a swimsuit, and one warm layer for the evening. Choose comfortable shoes: in May you walk a lot on stone and trails. Bring a first aid kit with painkillers and insect bite remedies too, especially on the islands.

Is the Samaria Gorge open in May?

The park operates seasonally, usually from early May (as of 09/2026, official website). Dates depend on snow in the mountains, so check them before your trip. Go in the morning: the route is long, and it gets hot after midday.

Where are there fewer tourists in May?

On the Peloponnese, in Epirus, and on smaller islands like Karpathos, Chios, and Samos. Athens and the Cyclades are already lively, but without the summer density. Rhodes and Crete stay calm almost until the end of May.

Is it a good idea to go to Greece in May with kids?

Yes, May suits families better than July. The heat is mild, the sea is cool, and there are fewer lines. Bring a stroller with wide wheels for old streets and plan a midday break. The water is colder than in summer, so kids swim for shorter periods.

In short: what is worth booking

If you have a week and want sun, choose Crete or Rhodes. If you want cities and museums, plan Athens with the Acropolis. If you are going with a group for nightlife, look at Mykonos. If you are looking for quiet, choose Karpathos, Chios, or the Peloponnese.

In May you get warm weather, empty beaches, and prices lower than in July. Book accommodation and tickets for the first days in advance: long weekends sell out quickly.
