Houses in these towns stand so close to the cliff edge that the street ends in a sheer drop.

Five towns in this selection cling to the edge of the rocks: a fortress in Bulgaria, villages in Liguria, an Andalusian plateau, and white houses above a caldera. We checked how much entry costs, which months to go, and where to book accommodation in advance.

The Via dell'Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola is open again. You can only walk it with a reservation and a park card (as of 09/2026, Cinque Terre park). For Ronda or Santorini, set aside two days. You can cover the villages of Cinque Terre in a weekend.

The cliffs also shape the logistics. There is almost no parking in the old quarters. In Cinque Terre, you leave your car in La Spezia and continue by train. Below, each town has a line on how to get there.

1. Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria

The old town of Veliko Tarnovo climbs three hills above the Yantra River. The historic part ends with a fortress wall on Tsarevets Hill. This was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. You can cover a good part of the town on foot in one day.

The fortress walls and the Patriarchal Cathedral survive on Tsarevets. In the evening, a light and sound show is projected onto the walls. The story tells of the siege of the fortress. Dates are published on the official show website, so it is worth checking the schedule before your trip.

Another reason to go to Tarnovo specifically is wine. Wineries with tastings operate in the old town. In the evening, you will end up in bars on the main street: some of them are open around the clock, especially on weekends.

How to get there: buses from Sofia and Varna run all day. The nearest rail hub, Gorna Oryahovitsa, is a few kilometers from the center.
Cost: fortress tickets and show tickets are sold separately, check the current rates in advance.
Who it's for: those who combine history and wine and do not take a car.

2. Riomaggiore in Liguria

Riomaggiore is carved into a cliff that drops straight into the Ligurian Sea. The village sits south of the others in Cinque Terre. From the pier, narrow staircases climb between houses in every shade of yellow and pink.

The Via dell'Amore, the Path of Love, runs through the village. The trail connects Riomaggiore to Manarola and follows the cliff edge right above the water. You can only access it during your reserved time slot (as of 09/2026, Path of Love entry rules). You'll catch the sunset over the sea. Bring water before you set out.

Below the pier, small stone coves are tucked away. People swim here after a hike. Further on, seafood restaurants and local white wine await. For divers, there are underwater crevices and caves near the rocks.

How to get there: regional trains on the La Spezia, Levanto line connect the five villages. Riomaggiore station is right in the center of town.
Cost: paid trails are covered by the Cinque Terre Card for 1-3 days, sold online and at station info points. For the Path of Love, you also need a separate time slot reservation in addition to the card.
Who it's for: those who want to combine trekking, sea, and wine in one trip.
The catch: trails close during yellow, orange, or red hazard levels. Check trail status before heading out.

3. Manarola in Liguria

Manarola sits on a sheer cliff above the Ligurian Sea. The village is considered one of the oldest in Cinque Terre. Houses crowd along a single street that descends to a small harbor. Matters important to the village are still discussed in the central square.

Grapes here grow on terraces right above the houses. Sweet wine is made from semi-dried grapes. Local winemakers are convinced that their wine was prized as far back as the Roman Empire. You can test that yourself at a tasting.

There is no beach in Manarola's harbor. People swim off the rocks and in nearby coves. On the plus side, fishing boats depart from the harbor, so restaurants on the waterfront serve fresh local fish.

How to get there: you can reach Manarola station by train; stairs lead from the platform down to the water.
Cost: the same park card as in Riomaggiore, with paid trail access included.
Who it's for: those coming for the views, wine, and trails rather than a sandy beach.
The catch: the harbor has no beach, and in high season the park limits visitor flow on the trails.

4. Ronda in Andalusia

Ronda stands on a plateau split by the deep El Tajo gorge. Houses sit right at the edge of the cliff. Bridges span the gorge, and the tallest of them, Puente Nuevo, is visible from almost anywhere in town.

Ronda's bullring operates as a museum; entry prices are listed below under "Cost." It is open every day, but hours depend on the season: from April through September 10:00 to 20:00, in March and October until 19:00, in winter until 18:00 (as of 09/2026, official bullring website). This summer, renovation work is underway at the bullring. Some areas may be closed.

You'll walk across bridges at dizzying heights. Far below flows the Guadalevín River. Descending into the gorge and climbing back up requires stamina and basic fitness. Bring plenty of water.

Ronda isn't the best choice as a base for your entire vacation. But it fits easily into an Andalusia itinerary, and in the old town you'll find small museums about local legends.

Getting there: trains run from Malaga and Algeciras, and the station is within walking distance of the old town.
Cost: €10 for entry, €12 with an audio guide, €8 for groups (as of 09/2026, current entry prices).
Who it's for: for those traveling through Andalusia who want to see the gorge and one of the country's oldest arenas.
The catch: in the evening there aren't many entertainment options, and the descent into the gorge requires a good supply of energy and water.

5. Oia on Santorini

Oia sits at the northern tip of Santorini. White houses are built right on the edge of the caldera. The streets are so narrow that cars are banned. You'll be left with walking.

People come here primarily for the sunset. The sun drops behind the caldera, and the sky over the Aegean Sea shifts from white to orange in a matter of minutes. In summer, the streets are packed at that hour. Arrive early.

Accommodation and food in Oia are expensive: a week in a white house above the caldera is not within every tourist's budget. In return, you get the view that people come to Santorini for.

How to get there: planes fly to Santorini and ferries run from Athens and Crete, and buses and taxis go from the port and airport to Oia.
Cost: walking the streets is free; you'll pay for accommodation, food, and transport.
Who it's for: those willing to pay for the view and not afraid of crowds.
The catch: in high season at sunset the town is packed, and prices are higher than in other parts of the island.

Do you need a reservation for the Path of Love in Cinque Terre?

Yes, you won't be allowed on the trail without a reservation. Entry is activated by the park card, and you choose your visiting time at purchase (as of 09/2026, trail status in Cinque Terre National Park). If you're walking to Manarola, leave enough time for the trail and bring water.

How much does entry to the arena in Ronda cost?

In May, June, and September there are noticeably fewer people than in July and August, and the light is almost the same. Claim a spot at the edge of the caldera early: after sunset the streets empty out quickly, but getting there before it is hard.

Can you get around Cinque Terre without a car?

Yes. Regional trains connect the five villages, and the park card gives access to the paid trails (as of 09/2026, Cinque Terre Card fares). Trains run frequently, and the trip between neighboring villages takes just a few minutes.

In short: what's worth booking

If you have one day in Cinque Terre, get the park card and a Path of Love reservation in advance. If you're going to Ronda, keep the arena renovation in mind: some areas are closed, but the lines are shorter. If you want a sunset over the caldera, book accommodation in Oia several months ahead.
