Brocken mountain in the Harz: steam train to the summit and Walpurgis Night sabbath
Mount Brocken rises to 1,141 m above sea level. It is the highest point in the Harz and in all of Northern Germany (as of 09/2026, source). From the lowlands, the mountain is visible for dozens of kilometers, so it is easy to spot on a clear day.
Brocken lies in the Harz National Park, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Since 1899, the narrow-gauge Brockenbahn steam railway has climbed to the summit, so you can reach the top without a long hike.
It is not only its height that made the mountain famous. For centuries it was called Blocksberg and was believed to be the place where evil spirits gather on Walpurgis Night. The practical part is below: how to go up by steam train, what to see on the summit, and where to stay overnight at the foot of the mountain.

Where Mount Brocken is located
💡 In short:
- Brockenbahn schedule for 2026: checked on the official HSB website.
- The summit is about 12 km southwest of central Wernigerode; the resort town of Schierke sits at the foot.
- The summit dome remains treeless, so the viewing platform offers a panorama of the entire Harz.
The summit is about 12 km southwest of central Wernigerode, and the resort town of Schierke sits at the southeastern foot (as of 09/2026, Wikipedia). The border with Lower Saxony is only about 2 km away.
Brocken is made of granite, and its dome above the tree line remains treeless. That is exactly why the viewing platform offers a panorama of the entire Harz. On a clear day, you can make out Magdeburg Cathedral 79 km away (as of 09/2026, Wikipedia).

Until 1989, a closed border zone lay here, and today the summit is open to everyone. The only line you stand in is for a ticket on the steam train.
How to climb Brocken on the Brockenbahn steam train
The narrow-gauge Brockenbahn railway leads to the top. Its trains are pulled by a real steam locomotive, so the ascent becomes an attraction in itself. Smoke billows from the chimney, the whistle sounds, and spruce-covered Harz slopes drift past the window.
The railway belongs to the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) network. Trains depart from Wernigerode and climb via Schierke straight to the summit (as of 09/2026, HSB). In winter, the route is sometimes closed due to snow, so it is worth checking the schedule in advance.
Option | Who it suits | Things to note |
|---|---|---|
Brockenbahn steam train | Those who do not want to walk | Book tickets in advance; cancellations happen in winter |
Hiking trail | Those ready for a long climb | The top is often foggy with strong wind |
Bicycle on Brockenstraße | Active riders | The paved road leads almost to the summit dome |
Car | Those driving to the foot | No vehicle access to the summit; cars are left below |
The paved Brockenstraße is open to cyclists and pedestrians, but private cars cannot drive to the top (as of 09/2026, Wikipedia). Many people walk, but pace yourself: the climb is long and almost always in fog.

From there you walk between the hotel, the museum, and the radio towers. Bring a warm jacket: even in July it is cool and windy on the summit.
The Brocken specter and fog at the summit
Fog on the Brocken is almost constant. The dome is exposed to all winds, and moist air rises up the slopes and settles on the summit. So be glad for every clear hour, and on a bad-weather day do not be surprised by zero visibility.
In the fog you can see the "Brocken specter". That is the name for the enlarged shadow a person casts onto a veil of water droplets. Around it a rainbow halo sometimes flashes, which physicists explain by light diffraction in the droplets.
The specter frightened people for centuries, and it is no surprise that witch stories were born right here. Want to catch the phenomenon? Stand with your back to the sun, and your shadow will fall directly onto the fog.
The dark history and legends of the Brocken
The mountain's reputation as a witches' sabbath site took hold back in the Middle Ages. According to legend, on Walpurgis Night witches flew to the summit and held a feast with black magic there. Residents of Wernigerode preferred not to leave their homes that night.
After World War II and the division of Germany, the mountain ended up in the GDR border zone. Military listening stations and radio towers were placed on the summit, and access was closed for a long time. The towers themselves still stand on the summit today.
Today a museum recalls that past. The mountain lives on tourism: a hotel, restaurants, a viewing platform, and an ancient granite boulder around which, according to legend, evil spirits danced (as of Harzer Tourismusverband).
Walpurgis Night on the Brocken
On the night of April 30 to May 1, Europe celebrates Walpurgis Night, a local equivalent of Halloween. For the Harz it is the main holiday of the season: thousands of people put on witch, vampire, and demon costumes.
Costumes here are made carefully, not with "a couple of scars on the neck". The main festivities take place down below, in Schierke, Thale, and Wernigerode. There the costumed crowd dances to gothic music and waits for the final fire show. It symbolizes victory over evil spirits and the cleansing of the surrounding area.
Want to attend the celebration? Book accommodation in advance, because the closer the date, the more people want to go. On the summit itself there is only one small hotel and two restaurants, so it is more convenient to stay overnight down below.
Goethe also had a hand in the Brocken. The poet climbed to the summit more than once and featured it in "Faust" in the Walpurgis Night scene. One of the Harz trails bears his name, and the long Hexenstieg route leads through the mountains to Thale.
What to see on the Brocken summit
On the dome everything is close together, so you can cover it in one loop. You come out to the viewing platform, walk around the radio towers, and stop by the museum. The museum halls lay out the whole history of the place: from witch legends to the military past of the 20th century.

In clear weather you can see far beyond the Harz from here; in fog everything disappears within a few steps. Plan half a day for the ascent: the journey, the walk, and lunch all take time.

Where to stay at the foot of the Brocken
The most convenient place to stay overnight is Wernigerode. It is an old town with a town hall, half-timbered houses, and a castle above the town (as of Stadt Wernigerode). The steam train to the Brocken leaves from here, so in the morning you do not waste time on travel.

There are fewer houses here, but you are closer to the Brockenbahn. Osterode and Thale remain alternatives: they work if everything in Wernigerode and Schierke is booked for Walpurgis Night.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
Can you go up the Brocken without a car?
Yes, and it is the most convenient option. The Brockenbahn narrow-gauge steam train runs from Wernigerode via Schierke straight to the summit, so you do not need a personal car. The journey is unhurried, but you get to the top without any hiking. Check timetables and tickets on the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen website.
When is the best time to visit the Brocken?
The best time depends on your goal. For panoramic views, come on a clear day and early in the morning, before the fog rolls in. For atmosphere, choose Walpurgis Night from April 30 to May 1, but book accommodation well in advance. In winter, some routes are closed due to snow.
What is the Brocken spectre?
It is your own shadow cast on a bank of fog. Due to an optical effect, it appears huge and upright, with a rainbow halo around it. The phenomenon is often seen on the Brocken, where fog lingers almost constantly. Stand with your back to the sun and you will catch the spectre.
Is it true that witches hold a sabbath on the Brocken?
It is a legend, not a historical fact. In the Middle Ages, the mountain gained a reputation as a place where evil spirits gather on Walpurgis Night. Today, the witch imagery has become the basis of a town festival. Thousands of people in costumes gather mainly in Schierke, Thale and Wernigerode and wait for the fire show. That is how an old legend turned into a major tourist event.
Where can you stay overnight near the Brocken?
At the summit there is only one small hotel and two restaurants, so places are limited. It is more convenient to stay down below: in Wernigerode, where the steam train departs, or in Schierke at the foot of the mountain. For Walpurgis Night, book accommodation months ahead, otherwise the only options left will be in Osterode and Thale.
In short: what to book
If you are going for the panorama, buy your Brockenbahn ticket in advance and head up in the morning: during the day, fog often blocks the view. If your goal is the festival, book a night in Wernigerode around Walpurgis Night, when there are almost no rooms left.
For an overnight stay, the center of Wernigerode near the Brockenbahn station is the most convenient: hotels in Wernigerode on Trip.com.
