Spirit Island in Jasper: how to get to the postcard island
Spirit Island is one of the most recognizable landscapes in Canada. You can only reach it by water. The island lies 14 km from the north shore of Maligne Lake, and no road or trail leads to it (as of 09/2026, official Maligne Lake page). Here is how the cruise works, when to go, how much it costs, and what has changed in the park since the 2024 wildfire.
Getting here takes some planning. The dock sits at the dead end of the Maligne Valley, scheduled buses run infrequently, and boat tickets sell out in advance during high season. We checked the schedule and prices on the operator's official website and put together practical details for your trip.

Where Spirit Island is located
💡 In short:
- The island is only reachable by water; there are no roads or hiking routes to it.
- The cruise dock is at the north end of Maligne Lake, about an hour's drive from the town of Jasper.
- Check cruise schedules and prices on the operator's official website.
Jasper National Park in Alberta was established in 1907. Today it is one of Canada's largest protected parks: its area exceeds 11,000 sq km (according to the park's official website). Access to the most protected areas is restricted, and vehicle entry is prohibited in some places. You explore most of the territory in your own car or as part of a guided tour.
The Maligne River flows through the valley. The French name means "wicked": explorer Pierre-Jean De Smet named it that for its wild character during spring floods. The river flows into Maligne Lake, the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. The lake is about 22 km long (according to Parks Canada).
Mountains surround the lake on all sides, and the water is cold and clear. The color shifts from soft blue to deep turquoise. Walking along the shore is nearly impossible, so the lake is best viewed from a boat. The lake is home to trout, pike, and other fish species.

Along the way you will see waterfalls, a canyon, and viewpoints. Leave Jasper in the morning to catch the first cruise and avoid crowds at the dock.
What to see and how:
Sight | How to see it | Best time |
|---|---|---|
Spirit Island | cruise, shore stop at the viewpoint | morning, calmer water |
Maligne Lake | cruise or kayak | morning, fewer people |
Maligne Valley | by car, on the way to the lake | first departure from Jasper |
What Spirit Island looks like
Spirit Island lies almost in the middle of the lake. It is a small patch of land covered with grass and spruce trees. A narrow strip of land connects it to the shore, so it only becomes a true island during spring floods. From the viewpoint you see it against a backdrop of mountains, water, and coniferous forest.

Two lovers from warring tribes met secretly at this spot. The girl's father forbade her from coming, and she stopped. The young man waited for her by the trees until he died there. That is how the place got its name, Spirit Island.
You cannot set foot on the island itself; there are no steps or trails there. The cruise docks at the Spirit Island viewpoint, and passengers go ashore. That is where the iconic view opens up. Calm water reflects the mountains, and neat rows of pines stand at the base. This angle appears on postcards and magnets all over Jasper.
Take the postcard shot from the viewpoint on the shore. In the morning the water is calmer, and the mountains reflect more evenly in the lake.
Maligne Lake cruise
The only type of excursion to the island is a boat tour on the lake. The classic cruise lasts about 90 minutes and runs on a schedule (as of 09/2026, Banff Jasper Collection). There is also an upgraded option with a fuller experience. Book tickets in advance: in July and August, slots for popular times sell out quickly.
- The catch: you are not dropped off on the island itself; photos are taken from the viewpoint on the shore.

In autumn, deciduous shrubs and trees turn red and yellow. The lake reflects the blue sky, dark pines, and orange shrubs, making the landscape high-contrast. Wildlife is out in the open here: you may spot a moose, deer, or a grizzly fishing near the water. Wolves and mountain goats live in the forests, and birds fill the sky. Stay behind the barriers and close to the boat.

Where to stay in Jasper
The town of Jasper is the most convenient place to spend the night: it has dozens of hotels, motels, guesthouses, and campgrounds. Deer roam calmly right in town, so drive slowly. Outside town there are campgrounds and forest cabins: cheaper and closer to nature.

In July 2024, the town experienced the largest wildfire in a century. About 25,000 people were evacuated from Jasper, and the fire burned more than 32,000 hectares (according to Tourism Jasper). Some homes and commercial buildings were lost, but the park and main attractions have been restored, and visitors are still welcome. Before your trip, check road status and open sites on the Parks Canada website.
Some hotels are closed or operating at limited capacity, so book in advance: see hotels in Jasper on Trip.com.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
Can you get to Spirit Island without a tour?
You cannot get there on your own: there are no roads or trails to the island, and it lies far from the dock. Only excursion boats and private non-motorized boats travel on the water, and kayaking requires experience and gear. For most travelers, the cruise remains the easiest way to see the island.
How much does the Spirit Island cruise cost?
Check the exact price on the operator's official website; it varies by season. Booking early helps with both price and time slot.
When is the best time to visit Maligne Lake?
The cruise season opens in late spring and runs until early fall. July and August have the warmest days, but also the largest crowds. In autumn there are fewer tourists, and the deciduous trees add contrasting colors for photos.
Is the park open after the 2024 wildfire?
Yes, Jasper National Park is open, and most roads and viewpoints are operating. The town is recovering, and some hotels are already welcoming guests. Check road status and closed areas on the Parks Canada website before you leave.
What should I bring on the Maligne Lake cruise?
Bring a warm jacket even in summer: it is colder on the water than in town. A hat, sunscreen, and a charged camera will also come in handy.
In short: what to book
Spirit Island is worth seeing at least once: it is Canada's most recognizable landscape, and it looks even better from the water than on a postcard. For a short trip, the classic Maligne Lake cruise is enough. If you are traveling with a tent, add a night at a campground near Jasper. If you are into photography, choose a morning departure with calm water.
