In a hotel description you will come across dozens of English terms. Some of them hide extra charges, some describe the view from the window, and some relate to check-in times.

The check-out time is the time by which the room must be vacated. At most hotels, check-out falls around midday, and check-in starts in the afternoon. The exact schedule depends on the chain and the city: at airport hotels it is more flexible, while at resorts it is tied to transfer bus schedules. If you arrive at night or early in the morning, contact the hotel in advance, because the room is still being cleaned by the housekeeping shift after the previous guest.
Early check-in and late check-out are granted based on room availability, so nobody promises a guarantee. Extending your stay is arranged at the front desk for an additional fee. Before check-in, luggage can be left in the luggage room, and this service is usually free of charge.

Reception: what the front desk handles
Reception (also spelled "ресепшен" and "рецепшн" in Russian) is the front desk. This is where you check in and check out, book excursions, a restaurant table, spa services, and a babysitter. This is also where you request a safe if there is none in your room, and where you leave your luggage after check-out.
Come with your questions before the evening rush. During check-in hours a queue forms at the desk, and a free staff member only appears closer to night.
On your bill you will find a deposit and a city tax. The deposit is blocked on your card for the duration of your stay, and its amount depends on the hotel category and the country. The resort tax (city tax, Kurtaxe, tourist tax) is paid on site, and it is usually not included in the booking price.

Room types: standard, suite, and standalone units
Category names differ even within the same chain, so look at the floor area, the number of beds, and the view. The table shows what each term usually means.

A patio is an inner courtyard in Spanish-Moorish architecture. It is neither a balcony nor a terrace, although you will still have an exit from your room. Such courtyards are found in hotels in Spain, Portugal, and southern Italy.
Bed types: twin, french, and king-size

Swapping a twin for a double bed is not always possible: the furniture is assigned to a specific room. Send your request in advance, and the hotel will confirm it in the booking. If you are traveling with a child, ask whether they provide a baby cot and whether there is a charge for it. Connecting rooms are also booked in advance, because their number at a hotel is limited.
Views: sea view, garden view, and side sea view
The view from the window is the most common reason for an extra charge. The term sea view means a view of the sea, garden view describes a view of the garden, and pool view means a view of the pool. Between them there is an intermediate option: side sea view, where the sea is visible from the side and only partially.
Read the prefixes carefully. Partial sea view and side sea view mean the same thing: you are not promised a full view of the water. Another term, ocean view, appears at hotels on the Atlantic, and it also does not always equal a view of the beach.
Check the floor. On the ground floor, a sea view often runs into greenery or the edge of the pool. If the view matters, ask for confirmation before paying: the photos in the hotel gallery are taken from the best rooms.
Services with a separate price tag: room service, butler, and turn down service
Room service means delivery of food and drinks to your room, usually for an extra charge. Turn down service is the evening preparation of the bed in higher-category rooms. A butler is a personal attendant: he handles the guest's everyday requests and sometimes helps with luggage.
Before ordering, check the service charge. At some hotels it is added to the bill automatically, so the final amount on the check is higher than the price on the menu. Paid sun loungers by the pool and a paid in-room safe are typical for resort hotels. Hotels write meal plans as abbreviations, and in the booking you see a pair of letters. BB gives breakfast only, HB adds dinner, FB includes lunch, and AI covers drinks and snacks throughout the day. An important detail: with half board drinks are usually paid, and with all inclusive not all brands are free by any means.
Compare rates by the number of meals, not by the size of the word in the description. Sometimes a hotel with half board near the city is more interesting than the AI format: you dine differently and still have time to see the city.
Stars and categories: what the classification means
Stars in Europe are assigned according to the common Hotelstars Union catalog, which unites hotel associations from different countries (according to the official website). The criteria catalog is revised every five to six years, and the current version covers 2025-2030 (according to WKO and DEHOGA Baden-Württemberg).
Each criterion describes furniture, lighting, the bathroom, guest reception, and sound insulation. The Superior designation in the name means that the hotel meets more requirements of its category. Therefore hotels in the same category still differ: what matters is how many criteria above the minimum each one meets.
Stars also affect the set of services: the category sets the minimum amenities, room size, and front desk opening hours. For you this means a simple thing: compare not the sign on the door, but the list of services in the description.
What to check in the booking before paying
Reread four lines in the booking: check-in/check-out time, bed type, view, and meal plan. If the view is not specified, ask the hotel directly, because at the front desk there are more options than in search results.
Check whether the city tax is included and what exactly the meal plan gives you. Save the booking confirmation: hotels sometimes change the terms of early check-in and late check-out on the spot.
