10 Doctor Who locations you can see in Britain
For fans of Doctor Who, the blue TARDIS box has long stopped being just fiction. Many locations from the series exist in reality, and you can see them with your own eyes. Filming took place across almost all of Britain, but most often in Wales and London.
We have put together ten places that appeared on screen more often than others: beaches, churches, mansions, and museums in Cardiff. Entry to the main museums of Wales is free (as of 09/2026, Amgueddfa Cymru).

The season two finale "Doomsday" still moves fans to this day. In this episode, Rose Tyler says goodbye to the Doctor on a shore. According to the plot, they meet in Norway's Bad Wolf Bay, but filming took place at Southerndown Beach in Dunraven Bay.
Steep gray cliffs and large boulders are scattered along the entire shore. Tourists love this beach, and you will easily recognize these spots on screen at any time of year. At low tide, rock pools open up here, and you can wander through them for hours. Fossils are preserved in the cliffs.

Later, angels walked along this beach in "The Time of Angels" and "Flesh and Stone." It also stood in for the engine room of the ark ship in "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship."
- The catch: the rock pools are only accessible at low tide; at high tide part of the shore is underwater
2. St Paul's Church in Cardiff
The episode "Father's Day" from season one made fans shed a tear. Rose travels to the past with the Doctor to be with her father at the moment of his death. All the events unfold near the church and on the neighboring street.
© Mark Healey · CC BY-SAPhoto: Mark Healey, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsThe main action was filmed at St Paul's Church in Cardiff. The foundation stone was laid in 1889, and on February 5, 1890, the church opened to visitors. Today part of the building belongs to a housing association, and renovation work is underway in another part.
The exterior of the building is still easily recognizable: you will find it by its stone walls and clock tower. You cannot walk past that kind of texture.
- The catch: part of the building is occupied by a housing association, and the courtyard is closed to tourists
3. Treowen and Craig-y-Nos Castle
The episode "Tooth and Claw" from season two was filmed at two Welsh estates at once. According to the plot, the Doctor and Rose get the date wrong and end up in Scotland in 1879, where they meet Queen Victoria. They spend the night at the Torchwood estate, and then the mysteries and hostile aliens begin.
© Colin · CC BY-SAPhoto: Colin, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsThe exterior shots were filmed at Craig-y-Nos Castle in the Swansea Valley. The castle was built between 1841 and 1843 as a country house in the Scottish style. It stands in parkland on the banks of the River Tawe, on the edge of the Black Mountain. A hotel now operates in the building, and you can stay overnight there.
The interior scenes were not filmed here but at Treowen. This early 17th-century mansion stands about 1 km from the village of Dingestow. For three centuries it was used as a farmhouse. Cultural events are now held there.

Prices at Craig-y-Nos Castle on Trip.com are worth checking before your trip.
- The catch: the interiors of the Torchwood estate were filmed at a different property, so you will not see them at Craig-y-Nos Castle
4. The globe theatre in London
In the episode "The Shakespeare Code" from season three, companion Martha Jones finds herself in London in 1599 and meets William Shakespeare himself. Villains in the form of aliens lead the heroes onto the stage of the most famous British theater.
The first theater building was destroyed by fire on June 29, 1613. The structure was rebuilt in June 1614, but it too stood only until 1642. Filming for the series took place in the third building, reconstructed from descriptions and the remains of the foundation. The Globe Theatre reopened in 1997.

Today the venue hosts productions and exhibitions. Guided tours include entry to the exhibition on the theater's history (as of 09/2026, Shakespeare's Globe). Book tickets and guided tours for the Globe in advance, they sell out quickly in season.
- The catch: it is a 1997 reconstruction, not the original Shakespeare building
5. St Fagans and Treberfydd
A real test for Martha was the trip to 1913 in the episodes "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood." The Doctor locks his memories in a watch and temporarily becomes an ordinary teacher named John Smith. He teaches at a private boarding school, and Martha works there as a maid.
Most of the episodes were filmed at St Fagans National Museum of History near Cardiff. The museum opened in 1948. Outdoors, it brings together typical Welsh cottages, shops, and pubs that you can walk around in a couple of hours. Entry to the grounds is free (as of 09/2026, Amgueddfa Cymru).
© Llywelyn2000 · CC BY-SAPhoto: Llywelyn2000, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsThe school itself was played by the Victorian Gothic mansion Treberfydd. It was built in 1847-1850 south of Llangorse Lake, in Brecon Beacons National Park. The building has belonged to one family since it was built, but it is open to visitors.
- The catch: the boarding school classrooms and bedrooms were filmed at Treberfydd, not at the museum itself
6. St John the Baptist in central Cardiff
The Christmas episode "The Runaway Bride" introduces Donna Noble. She vanishes in the middle of her wedding and ends up in the TARDIS. After a brief argument, they work together to stop yet another attempt to take over Earth.
© No Swan So Fine · CC BY-SAPhoto: No Swan So Fine, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsThe night chase was filmed on St Mary Street in central Cardiff, the metal railing is easy to recognize. The wedding scenes took place at St John the Baptist Church. It is the only medieval church in the city center, dated to the 12th century.
You will find it right among the shops and cafes, a stone's throw from the pedestrian street.
- The catch: in the frame, fans more often recognize the metal railing on St Mary Street than the church itself
7. Llansannor Court in Wales
The episode "The Unicorn and the Wasp" from season four takes the characters to a tea party in December 1926. There, Donna and the Doctor meet Agatha Christie on the eve of her mysterious disappearance. Together with the writer, they unravel a crime.
The entire plot unfolds in one mansion and on its grounds. Llansannor Court in the Vale of Glamorgan was chosen for filming. The house dates back to the 16th century, but it was rebuilt several times over the following centuries. The simple two-story gray stone building fit the story perfectly.
© FruitMonkey · CC BY-SAPhoto: FruitMonkey, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0), Wikimedia CommonsIf you are looking for a quiet corner in Wales for a walk, this estate is a good choice.
- The catch: due to numerous rebuilds, 16th-century features are hard to find here
8. Llandaff and Llandaff Cathedral
In the episode "The Eleventh Hour" from season five, viewers meet the new companion, Amelia Pond. For a significant part of the episode, she runs around her hometown of Leadworth. In reality, filming took place in Llandaff, a suburb of Cardiff.
You will easily recognize the neat houses with stone fences, lawns, and local landmarks. The cathedral, over which an alien ship hovers in the story, draws particular attention. Llandaff Cathedral was built in the 12th century, and since then the building has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Admission is free, donations are welcome (as of 09/2026, Llandaff Cathedral).
© Bill Boaden · CC BY-SAPhoto: Bill Boaden, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0), Wikimedia CommonsThe cathedral appeared again in the episode "Vincent and the Doctor." There it played the church in Auvers from Vincent van Gogh's painting, and you can easily compare the frame with the canvas.
- The catch: the cathedral has been destroyed and restored several times, so few ancient details remain
9. National Museum Cardiff
This place is rightly called the record holder for the number of appearances in the series. The halls and corridors of National Museum Cardiff appeared with enviable regularity across different seasons. The reason is simple: the endless exhibits and staircases can easily pass for parts of different buildings.
The halls first appeared in the episode "Dalek" from season one as a private museum of alien artifacts. In "The Lazarus Experiment," the lobby and staircase became the research center of an eccentric scientist. In "Vincent and the Doctor," the art department stood in for the Musée d'Orsay. And in the natural history section, young Amelia Pond hid among the stuffed animals.

The museum played its biggest role in the anniversary special "The Day of the Doctor." Admission is free (as of 09/2026, National Museums Wales website).
The museum deserves your attention on its own: it houses collections in archaeology, botany, art, geology, and zoology. Cardiff tours on GetYourGuide will help you cover the city in a day.
- The catch: the museum is large, and without a plan you can easily walk past the halls you want
10. Cardiff Bay and Roald Dahl Plass
We can't forget the locations that appeared many times in the spin-off "Torchwood." In the story, the secret organization's base was located on Mermaid Quay. It's hard to walk past this spot: there is now a memorial plaque to Ianto Jones, a character from the series. Fans regularly leave notes and messages nearby.
The secret entrance to Torchwood was hidden elsewhere, at Roald Dahl Plass under the water tower fountain. This same square also appeared in "Doctor Who" itself. In the episode "Boom Town" from season one, the TARDIS lands here with Rose, Captain Jack Harkness, and the Doctor. Later, the Doctor and Martha fly here in "Utopia."
© Thomas Davey · CC BY-SAPhoto: Thomas Davey, CC BY-SA (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/), Wikimedia CommonsThe characters return here with Captain Jack in the season three finale "Last of the Time Lords." If you come in the evening, the lights of the bay and the tower look especially recognizable.
- The catch: the entrance to Torchwood is marked only by the tower, and without a hint the spot is easy to miss
⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
Where was Rose Tyler's farewell to the Doctor filmed?
The scene from the season two finale "Doomsday" was filmed at Southerndown Beach in Dunraven Bay in Wales. The location is easy to recognize by the gray sheer cliffs, large rocks, and rock pools that appear at low tide.
Can you stay overnight at the Torchwood estate?
The interiors of the estate were filmed at Treowen House, which mainly opens to visitors for cultural events. The exterior shots were done at Craig-y-Nos Castle in the Swansea Valley. Today the castle operates as a hotel, so you can stay overnight within those very walls, just like in the series. Before your trip, check that the hotel is accepting guests.
How much does it cost to enter the museums in Cardiff?
Admission to National Museum Cardiff and St Fagans National Museum of History is free (as of 09/2026, Amgueddfa Cymru). Some temporary exhibitions occasionally have their own terms, so it's best to check the official website before your trip.
Where is the Ianto Jones memorial?
The memorial plaque to Ianto Jones stands on Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay. Fans regularly bring notes and messages to the plaque, so you will definitely notice it while walking along the bay in the evening.
Can you do the whole route in one day?
In one day you can realistically cover only the Cardiff cluster: the cathedral, the museums, and Cardiff Bay are close together and connected by bus. Southerndown Beach and the estates in the Swansea Valley are farther away, so it's better to set aside a separate day by car. And London and the Globe Theatre are best seen on a separate trip.
In short: what to book
The "Doctor Who" route is best split into two days: one for Cardiff, the second for the Welsh estates and the beach.
- If you have one day in Cardiff: the cathedral, National Museum Cardiff, and Cardiff Bay
- If you have a car: add Southerndown Beach and Craig-y-Nos Castle
- If you're going to London: don't miss the Globe Theatre tour
Where to stay depends on your plan. Hotels in Cardiff on Trip.com are convenient for the museums and the bay, while a base in Swansea works if you want to visit the estates.
