Tram T4 and bus 2: how to get from Tallinn Airport to the center
Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport sits four kilometers from the city center (according to the airport website). That is closer than most European capitals. The tram from the terminal to the center takes about twenty minutes (as of 09/2026, T4 line schedule).
The biggest change for anyone who has been to Tallinn before concerns fare payment. The old advice about paying cash on the tram is outdated, and this trips up almost everyone. We cover how to pay now in the tram section below.
Below we break down all the ways to get from the terminal to the city, ticket prices, the train from Ülemiste station, taxis, parking, and car rental. You will see which option fits your hotel, arrival time, and number of suitcases.

How the Tallinn airport transfer works
💡 In short:
- Trams T2 and T4, buses 2 and 65, plus taxis and Bolt run from the terminal to the center.
- Ticket prices and payment rules are collected in the fares section below.
- The train does not work for the terminal: the nearest station, Ülemiste, is 800 meters away (per the map).
- Prices and schedules: 09/2026, checked on the official public transport page

The tram is the cheapest and does not sit in traffic. The bus helps if you are heading to the ferry terminal or the Lasnamäe district.
A taxi is convenient at night and with a lot of luggage. But during the morning rush hour a car drives on the same streets as the tram, so the advantage melts away fast.
Option | Price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
Trams T2 and T4 | 2 € per hour | Anyone heading to the center or the port |
Buses 2 and 65 | 2 € per hour | Those heading to the port or Lasnamäe |
Elron train from Ülemiste station | per Elron fare | Those continuing on to Tartu or Narva |
Taxi and Bolt | taxi by meter, Bolt price is fixed in the app | At night, with luggage, in a group |
Prices in the table are as of 09/2026, city fares on Visit Tallinn.

The tram is the simplest way to get from the airport to the center. The stop is right in front of the passenger terminal, on the city side, so you barely need to walk with your suitcase. From there you just follow the signs to the platform and board a tram.
© Smiley.toerist · CC BY-SAPhoto: Smiley.toerist, CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0), Wikimedia CommonsLine T4 connects Tondi, the airport, and the Lasnamäe corridor. Along the way it passes through Viru, Hobujaama, and Vabaduse väljak, in other words straight through the city center. From Viru väljak the ride takes about twenty minutes (as of 09/2026, T4 line map). Line T2 runs from Kopli through the Vanasadam passenger port to the airport and is convenient if you are heading straight to a ferry.
A ticket costs €2 and is valid for one hour with transfers (as of 09/2026, city transport fares). You cannot buy a ticket from the driver. You tap a contactless bank card or phone on the validator and get a single ticket automatically. The alternative for anyone without a contactless card is a QR code, which you buy on pilet.ee and scan on the same validator.
The Ühiskaart is sold and topped up at the R-Kiosk in the airport's public area, next to the arrivals exit. For Tallinn residents registered in the city, travel is free; tourists are not eligible. You must validate your card or code every time you board, even if you already have a multi-day pass (as of 09/2026, payment rules).
- The catch: the tram does not go into the Old Town; from the Viru stop you walk to the hotels.
Buses 2 and 65 from the terminal
The bus stop is next to the tram stop. Bus 2 runs from the city center to Mõigu and stops at the airport in both directions. Its main advantage is that it connects the terminal with the passenger port, where ferries from Helsinki and Stockholm arrive.
Bus 65 heads toward Priisle via Lasnamäe and suits those who have booked accommodation in that area. For schedules for both routes and exact platforms, see the airport page (as of 09/2026).
Payment on the bus is the same as on the tram: validator, card, or QR code. Long-distance Lux Express buses to Tartu and Võru also stop at the airport, but because of new tram track construction the stops are sometimes moved, so check the signs on site.
- The catch: bus 2 does not stop right outside the terminal exit, but at the parking lot on Tartu maantee, a few minutes' walk away.
Train, Ülemiste station, and Balti jaam station
There is no direct rail link to the terminal. The nearest station is called Ülemiste, 800 meters away (on the map), and Elron trains stop there. From the station to the terminal you take a tram or bus 65; they connect the railway with the airport.

From there the most convenient way to the airport is by tram through the center, and the station itself is served by buses 21, 21B, 41, 41B, 43, and 59, as well as trams 1 and 2.
You can find schedules for Elron suburban and long-distance trains on the carrier's website (as of 09/2026).
- The catch: from Ülemiste station to the terminal you still have either a walk or another ride on city transport.
Taxi and Bolt to your hotel
Taxis and Bolt wait outside the terminal exit. The car takes you straight to your hotel door, and with heavy luggage this is noticeably easier than hunting for a validator after a long flight. The drive is shorter than the tram ride, but in the morning rush hour the difference almost disappears: same streets, same traffic, same traffic lights.
The services do not have a fixed fare. The price depends on demand, time of day, and vehicle class, but in the app you see the final amount before you get in, so there are usually no surprises. If you arrive at night or are traveling in a group, check private airport transfer in advance: the driver will meet you in the arrivals hall.
- The catch: in rain and at rush hour the wait stretches out, and the price in the app rises along with it.
Parking and car rental at the airport
If you arrive in your own car, there is a short-stay parking garage at the terminal. You leave the car in a secured area and walk a few minutes to the terminal entrance. Long-term parking at the airport costs more than a park-and-ride lot on the outskirts, so for a week-long trip, work out your options in advance.
The city Park & Ride fare costs €3 and covers a driver with four passengers (as of 09/2026, the Park & Ride program on the city website). The condition is simple: the car stays at the park-and-ride lot, and from there you continue by tram or bus. For trips around Estonia outside Tallinn, compare car rental terms before you fly: in season there are fewer available cars.
- The catch: the cheap Park & Ride fare only works together with city transport and does not cover parking at the terminal.
Fares and tickets for city transport
One ticket system works on both the tram and the bus. You pay for time, not for the type of transport: a single ticket is valid for one hour, and during that hour you can transfer as many times as you like. Prices below are as of 09/2026, fares on Visit Tallinn; official rules and service updates are published by the city operator.
Ticket | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
Single | 2 € | One hour of travel with transfers |
Discounted | 1 € | For schoolchildren and seniors with ID |
Day ticket | 5.50 € | 24 hours, no limits |
3-day | 9 € | 72 hours of travel |
5-day | 11 € | 120 hours of travel |
30-day | 30 € | A month for people living in the city |
Park & Ride | 3 € | A day of parking and travel for the driver and passengers |
Riding without a ticket carries a fine under the public transport act; check the operator's website for the current amount. Inspectors board trams regularly, and money on your card without validation will not help you. If you use more single tickets in a day than the cost of a day ticket, the rest of your rides until the end of the day are free, but your card must hold at least enough for three single tickets.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to get from Tallinn Airport to the city center?
A single one-hour ticket costs 2 € (as of 09/2026, fares). Other tickets and payment rules are covered in the fares section above.
Does the tram run from the airport at night?
Tram service ends around midnight, and the first trams leave early in the morning. At night you can only get from the airport by taxi or Bolt. Check the line schedule in advance, because departure times sometimes change due to track construction work.
Can I buy a ticket from the bus driver?
No. Payment methods via the validator are covered in the section on trams T2 and T4. Without validation, your ride counts as fare evasion.
How to get from the airport to the ferry terminal?
Bus 2 connects the airport with the passenger port, so you do not need to transfer. The second option is tram T2, which runs from Kopli via Vanasadam to the terminal. Both routes accept the same city ticket. Check in advance which terminal your ferry leaves from, because they are located some distance apart.
What is cheaper to get to the hotel, a taxi or city transport?
City transport is cheaper and does not depend on traffic. Taxi and Bolt cost more, but they take you right to the hotel door. During the day with one suitcase the price difference is obvious; at night or with children a car is more convenient. The final taxi fare is shown in the app before you board, so you see the price in advance.
In short: what to book
If you arrive during the day and your hotel is in the center, take tram T4: about twenty minutes with no traffic. If you are heading to a ferry, bus 2 to the port will get you there. At night, with children, or with a lot of luggage, book a transfer in advance and do not go looking for a validator while half asleep.
If you have | Take |
|---|---|
Hotel in the center, daytime arrival | Tram T4 or T2 |
Ferry from the port | Bus 2 to Vanasadam |
Night arrival and a lot of luggage | Private transfer |
Long-term parking for your own car | Park & Ride for 3 € per day |
Trips around Estonia |
A hotel on the tram line saves you a taxi every day. Check hotel options in Tallinn on Trip.com and compare locations with the T2 and T4 stops before your trip.
