When to go to Georgia: best time by seasons and goals

When to go to Georgia: best time by seasons and goals

Georgia surprises with its diversity in a small area. The high Caucasus mountains call you to trekking, while the Black Sea coast breathes with almost Mediterranean warmth. The peak travel period falls on June through August, and the quietest time is from November to March. Now you just need to figure out when you should go. Below we break down the best time by purpose and the weather by season.

When to go to Georgia: in short

💡 In short: the best time depends on why you are going.

  • Cities and wine: April through June and in September, mild and without heat.
  • Trekking in the mountains: July and August, when high-mountain roads are open.
  • Beach on the Black Sea: May through late June, before the peak begins.
  • Alpine skiing: from around December 20 to late March.
  • Climate and seasons: checked 09/2026 based on data from the Georgian National Tourism Administration.

Best time overall: the velvet season

For most trips, choose May-June and September-October. This is the so-called velvet season: the weather is mild, and there are already or still few tourists. According to Wander-Lush (09/2026), the coast has the clearest skies and warmest sea from mid-September to early October.

The least rain falls in April, May, and September. At the same time, the climate varies greatly across the country. On the Black Sea coast it is humid subtropical, with heavy rainfall and high temperatures. Inland, the climate is temperate continental, with distinct seasons. The plateaus and slopes of the Lesser Caucasus are drier, closer to steppe. And in the highlands it is cool even in summer, especially in the mornings. Be sure to bring warm clothing.

Trekking in the Caucasus mountains: summer only

People go trekking in Georgia for the mountains and remote villages. Here peaks rise above 5,000 m, and medieval watchtowers stand in far-flung settlements. But the mountains are not open year-round, and that is the main thing to keep in mind.

High-mountain routes are accessible only in summer. Tusheti and Khevsureti usually open no earlier than June: the roads are bad, and in spring it rains. For Svaneti, July and August are ideal. From mid-October, snow closes the passes, and entire regions become inaccessible.

In winter, the mountains are extremely cold. Temperatures drop below -30 °C, and there is a lot of snow. So the best time for trekking is July and August. Planning the highlands? Take this window and do not risk the shoulder season.

Most travelers come from May through September. April and October are the shoulder season, and the quietest time is from November to March. Weather depends heavily on the region, so check your specific destination.

The coast. It is warmest by the sea. Even in winter it stays at plus 3-6 °C, and in summer the air and water warm up to 24-26 °C (as of 09/2026, Wander-Lush). If you come from May to late June, you will avoid the high-season rush that starts in July. From July, locals also head to the coast, and prices rise noticeably.

The east of the country. It is cooler here than on the coast, but noticeably warmer than in the mountains. In winter it ranges from -3 to 0 °C, and in summer the average is around 27 °C. During peak heat, as in Tbilisi, the air warms up to 40 °C. Humidity is lower than by the sea, so the heat is easier to bear.

Tbilisi. In summer the capital sometimes heats up to 40 °C (as of 09/2026, Wander-Lush). In winter the temperature drops below 10 °C, but usually stays above freezing. The best months for the city are May, June, and September. That way you avoid both the summer heat with humidity and the winter cold.

What to consider in each season

General seasonal guidelines will help you pack and plan your route. Weather varies from region to region, but the logic is simple.

Spring (March-May). An excellent time to walk around Tbilisi. Popular spots include the historic districts, the botanical garden, and the cable car ride up to Narikala Fortress. In the lowlands you can walk among wildflowers. For culture, come for Easter or Georgia's Independence Day. Note: the country follows the Orthodox calendar, so holiday dates differ from Catholic ones.

Summer (June-August). While Tbilisi swelters in the heat, the highlands beckon with cool air. It is cold there at night, so warm clothes are a must. Summer also works for the beach. But from July the coast gets crowded.

Autumn (September-November). The weather changes often, so be ready for both warm and cold days. The foliage bursts into color, and you catch the grape harvest. For many, this is the best compromise between warmth and crowds.

Winter (December-February). Winters in Georgia are cold. At night it is often below 0 °C, and almost everywhere except Tbilisi there is snow. This is the ideal season for alpine skiing. Popular resorts: Bakuriani, Gudauri, Mestia, and Goderdzi. The 2025-2026 season started on December 20 in Bakuriani, while the other resorts opened from December 27 and operate until around late March (as of 09/2026, Georgia Today). If you do not mind the cold for city walks, you get low prices and few tourists around.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a trip to Georgia overall?

The universal months are May-June and September-October, the so-called velvet season. The weather is mild, there is little rain, and fewer tourists than in July and August. This time is comfortable in cities, on the coast, and on lower-elevation trails.

Which month should I go trekking in the mountains?

Choose July and August. High-mountain regions like Tusheti, Khevsureti, and Svaneti open only by summer, and from mid-October snow closes the roads. In the shoulder season, the mountains are risky due to rain and rough roads.

When is the beach season open on the coast?

The best time for the beach is from May to late June. That way you avoid the crowds and high prices. The peak starts in July, when Georgians themselves head to the sea.

Is it worth going to Georgia in winter?

Yes, if you are into alpine skiing or a quiet city break. The season at resorts like Bakuriani and Gudauri runs from December 20 until around late March. In Tbilisi it is chilly in winter, but there is almost no snow, and prices and lines are noticeably lower.

What is the weather like in Tbilisi in summer?

In summer the capital heats up, at times to 40 °C, and humidity stays high. It is more comfortable to come in May, June, or September.

In short: which month to choose

Georgia is good in any season, but each purpose has its own month. Spring and autumn suit cities, wine, and mild weather. Summer is made for high-mountain trekking and the beach. Winter hands the slopes to skiers and offers quiet streets.

  • If you want cities and wine: take April-June or September.
  • If you want to head into the mountains with a backpack: take July and August.
  • If you are going to the beach: take May and June, before the rush.
  • If you love skiing: take the period from December 20 to late March.

Decide on your purpose, and the calendar will tell you the rest.
