When to go to the Turkish Riviera: weather and sea by month

Planning a vacation on the Turkish Riviera and not sure when to go? The difference between a May and an August vacation in Antalya is huge. In high season, daytime temperatures reach 40 °C, and the sea stays warm until late October.

The climate in Alanya, Kemer, and Side varies, but the overall pattern is the same: a long, warm summer and a mild winter. Antalya Airport receives direct flights from Germany, and from there you can quickly reach Belek, Side, Beldibi, Manavgat, and Alanya.

We have broken the year down by season: when the sea is warm, when the heat becomes oppressive, and in which months hotels cost less.

Turkish Riviera climate in numbers

💡 In short:

  • Beach season: late May, June, and September-October.
  • Peak heat: July and August, up to 40 °C with high humidity.
  • In winter, swimming is chilly, but hotels are cheaper.
  • Swimming season and water temperature: 09/2026, checked on the Turkish meteorological service website.

The Riviera lies in a subtropical Mediterranean climate, and the weather here is shaped by the Taurus Mountains. The range shields the coast from cold air masses from the north, so winters are mild and summers are long. Humidity is high, and you feel the heat more than in a dry climate.

In summer, daytime temperatures are 25-30 °C, on some days up to 40 °C, rain is rare, and the sun shines almost every day (according to MGM, as of 09/2026). From November to March, rainy days become more frequent. You can vacation on the Riviera year-round, and European snowbirds take advantage of that.

The resorts differ in small details, not in climate. In Belek and Side, the sea breeze softens the heat; in Alanya, summers are drier; in Kas, humidity is lower. If a good night's sleep matters to you, look for hotels one row back from the beach.

Best time for a beach vacation

May opens the swimming season. Daytime temperatures are 25-30 °C, the water warms up gradually, and beach loungers are free. By the end of the month, most travelers find swimming comfortable.

June is a compromise between heat and price. Air temperatures are around 30 °C, water around 23 °C (as of 09/2026, MGM). You don't have to keep children in the room from the morning, and evenings are pleasant for strolling along the promenade. That's why May and June work well for family vacations.

July and August bring the warmest water of the year, but also the toughest conditions. High humidity intensifies the heat, and the sun burns from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's better to hit the beach before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m., and stay in the shade during the day.

  • The catch: in high season, hotel prices are noticeably higher, and good rooms get booked months before the trip.

September opens a comfortable window again. The sea holds its summer warmth, the swelter fades, and you'll want a light jacket in the evening. October also works for a vacation, but the weather becomes more changeable.

Values are approximate: 09/2026, based on the Antalya temperature table and average water values.

The table shows average values, not a forecast for a specific week. One year delivers a steady warm September, another brings thunderstorms and a cold snap. Plan your trip around average data, but leave one flexible day in your itinerary.

Shoulder season and autumn risks

September and the first half of October are the best time for those who want a warm sea without exhausting heat. Daytime air temperatures are around 30 °C, and the water barely cools after August. You can swim comfortably, and the lines at ancient city entrances are shorter.

From the second half of October, the number of rainy days increases, and the coast gets downpours and thunderstorms (as of 09/2026, reise-klima.de). Nights turn cool, and you'll need a sweater.

  • The catch: in November, some hotels close for the winter, and outdoor pools stop operating.

The beach season on the Riviera is longer than it seems. Swimming is comfortable from late May through October, while April and November are better suited for walks and sightseeing.

Wintering and off-season beyond the beach

In winter, the Riviera doesn't empty out. Daytime temperatures are 15-20 °C, it's comfortable in a light jacket in the sun, and you can see two ancient cities in a day. Low season appeals to those who come for history, not a tan.

In the off-season, travelers do sports and hike in the Taurus foothills. The temperature allows walking all day without risk of overheating. Excursions that are scheduled for early morning in summer because of the heat run at convenient times in winter.

  • The catch: in winter, the sea is cold, so a beach vacation isn't possible in these months.

Prices in low season are lower than in August. The same hotel costs less, and the choice of rooms is wider. If you're flexible with dates, look at late November and early March: the weather is still mild, and high season is far away.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

When is the sea warmest on the Turkish Riviera?

The peak comes in July, August, and September. In September, the water stays around 28 °C (as of 09/2026, wohinwann.de), and in August it can be even warmer near the shore. By late October, the sea cools down, but a short swim is still possible. For families, September is more convenient than July: the heat is milder, and the water is just as good.

Can you swim in May?

By late May, the water is usually comfortable, especially around Alanya and Side, where the sea warms up faster. At the beginning of the month, mostly hardy people swim. If you're traveling with children, aim for the second half of May: air temperatures are 25-30 °C, there's almost no rain, and the beaches are half empty.

When are there the fewest tourists on the Riviera?

The main influx comes in July and August. It's quietest from November to March, and among the beach months, in May and October. In May, you get mild heat and free loungers; in October, a warm sea and noticeably fewer people. Prices in these months are lower than at the peak of the season.

Is it worth going to the Riviera in winter?

Yes, if your goal is sightseeing, sports, and mild weather. Rain falls more often than in summer, but the sun also makes an appearance. Swimming in winter is uncomfortable, but hotels are cheaper and ancient cities are open. A beach vacation is better postponed to other months.

Which months should you choose if you can't stand the heat?

Late May, June, and September-October. In these months, air temperatures stay in a comfortable range, and the humidity feels less intense. July and August, with temperatures up to 40 °C, suit those who spend all day in the sea or by the pool. June and September often win on price too.

In short: what to book

If you want a warm beach and tolerable heat, go for late May or September. If you want the warmest sea, plan for July and August and be ready for high prices. If you're coming for sightseeing and wintering, choose the period from November to March.

Selection matrix by season:

  • Warmest sea: July, August, September.
  • Family comfort: late May, June, September.
  • Cheap hotels and sightseeing: November-March.
