Where to stay on Koh Samui: 7 areas and hotels by budget

The area you stay in affects your vacation on Koh Samui more than the hotel category does. In Chaweng bars stay open until morning, while in Ban Tai the only sound after sunset is cicadas. Your choice of area determines whether your trip will be loud or peaceful.

The island is built up unevenly. Hotels of all categories are concentrated in the east and north, while the west has a limited selection of places to stay. That's why you choose the area before the hotel, and you pay for the rhythm of the place, not just for the room.

Below are seven areas of the island, from Chaweng to Ban Tai. For each one we give the character of the place, an honest catch, and one hotel with prices on Trip.com. If you're visiting for the first time, start with Chaweng or Lamai.

How to choose an area on Koh Samui

💡 In short:

  • Choose the area by its rhythm: Chaweng and Lamai put restaurants and shops right next to you, while Silver Beach, Ban Tai, and Bang Por offer quiet.
  • Book the north and Silver Beach in advance: there are few hotels there, and available dates go faster than on the east coast.
  • Factor in travel time: USM airport and Bang Rak Pier are in the northeast, while Nathon Pier is on the west coast.
  • Areas and beaches: 09/2026, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand names Chaweng, Lamai, Taling Ngam, and Natien as the island's top beaches (as of: 09/2026, official website). The last two are on the west coast, where hotels are scarce. Below you'll find seven areas with a wide choice of accommodation and beaches that are easy to reach on foot.

The rule is simple. If you want to walk to restaurants, pick the east coast. If you want to wake up under palm trees without music from the bar next door, look at Mae Nam, Ban Tai, and Silver Beach.

1. Chaweng: hotels along a long beach

Chaweng welcomes more tourists than any other area of Koh Samui. The main street runs along the shore, so restaurants, pubs, bars, and clubs are five minutes from your room. The beach is long, and there's room on the sand even in high season.

The first line is taken up by hotels and resorts, while hostels and guesthouses sit deeper in the blocks. This spread of prices attracts both couples and groups of friends. At night the area doesn't sleep, and music can be heard on the streets almost everywhere.

During the day Chaweng works well as a base. From your hotel you can reach the island's viewpoints and markets without changing accommodation. Shops and a shopping mall are also here, so forgotten items are easy to pick up.

  • Upper-tier hotel: Sheraton Samui Resort sits right by the beach. Guests are drawn to the infinity pool, the design, and the spacious rooms. Check prices at Sheraton Koh Samui on Trip.com.
  • Design hotel: SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort opens onto the sea and bets on room design and views.
  • Family option: Banana Fan Sea Resort offers a quiet property with a pool near the shore.
  • Who it's for: those who want everything nearby and don't mind evening activity.
  • Not for: those seeking quiet and secluded bays.
  • The catch: this is the most touristy area, and in season it's crowded and noisy.

2. Lamai: white sand and boulders

Lamai is quieter than Chaweng, but not boring. The white-sand beach ranks among the best on the island, and its southern part is known for large rounded boulders. The streets have less traffic, but there are plenty of restaurants and laid-back bars.

Hotels and bungalows here come in different categories, so the area suits families, couples, and long-term travelers alike. During the day you walk along the shore, and in the evening you sit at a bar by the water without loud music.

Near Lamai lie well-known natural landmarks: the Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks, Overlap Stone, and several waterfalls. Temples stand a short walk from the beach, so the area is convenient for quick outings.

  • Boutique hotel on the best stretch: Beluga Hotel sits by the most beautiful part of the beach, with rooms decorated with attention to detail.
  • Boutique hotel with a pool: Rocky Boutique Resort gets praise for its pool and breakfasts. Check prices at Rocky Boutique Lamai on Trip.com.
  • Budget option: Phannarai House puts you a few minutes' walk from the water and suits those watching their budget.
  • The catch: fewer evening entertainment options than in Chaweng.

3. Fisherman's village and Bophut beach

Bophut lies in the north of the island between Mae Nam and the Big Buddha temple. The area is known for Fisherman's Village with its historic houses, boutiques, and cafes. Once a week the street turns into the Walking Street night market.

The Fisherman's Village walking street market runs on Fridays, and the Maenam market on Thursdays (as of 09/2026, night market overview). Come at opening time; by late evening there's a line at the food stalls.

Bophut Beach is lined with palm trees and is good for swimming. Many bungalows sit right at the water's edge, so in the morning you step out of your room onto the sand. The atmosphere here is calm, and the area attracts independent travelers and couples.

  • New boutique hotel: Karma Resort opened recently, and some rooms have their own pool. Check availability at Karma Bophut on Trip.com.
  • Hostel with a pool: Samui Us Hostel suits backpackers: a pool, clean rooms, and a social atmosphere.
  • Small beachfront complex: Pico Beach Bungalows & Resort consists of several bungalows on the first line.
  • The catch: the area is quiet in the evening; there are no clubs here.

4. Maenam: palm trees and a long beach

Maenam is considered one of the best beaches on Koh Samui. The palm trees grow densely and provide shade, so the sand stays comfortable even at midday. The shore is even and long, which makes it good for walks along the water.

The village is quieter than Chaweng, but it has restaurants, bars, and shops. Once a week a night market opens on the street with food and local goods. It's close to the Big Buddha temple and Wat Plai Laem, so the area is convenient for sightseeing.

Some hotels sit right at the water, others further inland. If waking up by the sea matters to you, look for beachfront accommodation and book early.

  • Resort with an infinity pool: Saree Samui stands out for its well-kept garden and sea views from the pool.
  • Boutique hotel: W Koh Samui is in the eastern part of Maenam, and some villas have a private pool. Available dates: W Koh Samui on Trip.com.
  • Hotel for long vacations: Explorar Koh Samui offers large rooms and a big pool.
  • The catch: things wind down early in the evening; there are no loud clubs nearby.

5. Silver Beach: a small bay for peace and quiet

Many consider Silver Beach the most beautiful beach on the island. The bay is surrounded by huge round boulders, and the water stays clear even on windy days. The bottom slopes gently, so it's comfortable for families with children and for those who don't swim much.

The spot sits away from the major resorts. There isn't much accommodation here: a few bungalows and small hotels right by the water. You live in peace and quiet, but you'll have to drive for restaurants and shops.

For a romantic trip, this area works better than the eastern beaches. In the morning you swim almost alone, and in the evening you watch the sunset from the rocks.

  • Well-kept resort: Thongtakian Resort occupies the best spot in the bay, and the grounds are well maintained.
  • Hotel with a view: Crystal Bay Beach Resort sits at the edge of the bay, and the large rooms open onto a sea panorama. Prices: Crystal Bay Koh Samui on Trip.com.
  • Club-style hotel: Crystal Bay Yacht Club has a pool and tidy bungalows by the water.
  • The catch: the choice of hotels is minimal; without booking ahead you may not find a place.

6. Big Buddha area: Thongson Bay and Samrong Beach

The northeast of the island offers a quiet stay close to infrastructure. Thongson Bay and Samrong Beach are not as crowded as Chaweng, and the water here is clean. The area suits those who don't want noisy evenings.

From here it's easy to get to USM airport and Bang Rak Pier, where ferries leave for Koh Phangan. The Big Buddha temple and Wat Plai Laem are nearby. Ferry schedules to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are updated by the operators themselves, so check them before your trip on the Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery websites.

Luxury hotels are here too. If you want a villa with a pool and a sea view, this area is worth considering first.

  • Luxury with an infinity pool: Six Senses Samui is known for its breakfasts and panoramic pool. Prices: Six Senses Koh Samui on Trip.com.
  • Beach resort: Melati Beach Resort & Spa has two restaurants and a large pool.
  • Pool villas: Kerem Villas work well for a group or family trip.
  • The catch: nightlife is almost nonexistent here, and evening entertainment options are limited.

7. Ban Tai and Bang Por: the north without the hustle

Ban Tai occupies part of the long Bang Por beach in the north of the island. The shore is lined with palm trees, and there is no dense development along the water. On a clear day you can see Koh Phangan from here.

The area is chosen by those looking for quiet. In the morning you walk along an empty beach, in the afternoon you swim, in the evening you have dinner at one of the small restaurants. There are few shops and bars, so stock up on everything in advance.

There are almost no large hotels here: one luxury resort and several small complexes operate in the area. Because of this, places in the north get booked faster than you might expect.

  • Hotel by the sea: Mimosa Resort & Spa offers well-kept grounds, a pool, and rooms near the beach.
  • Luxury with a private beach: Belmond Napasai has a private stretch of shore and attentive service. Prices: Belmond Napasai Samui on Trip.com.
  • Waterfront villas: Jasmine & Tea House is a good fit for a romantic trip.
  • The catch: infrastructure is limited, and without a scooter or taxi you're confined to the hotel.
