Maldives seems like a story for millionaires until you compare prices. 4-star hotels with an all-inclusive system cost noticeably less than fancy five-star properties, yet they have the same lagoon, reef, and villas. The difference is in the details: fewer restaurants and simpler finishes.

Start with two questions: how far you're willing to travel from Malé and whether you need an overwater villa. The answers will immediately narrow the list down to five or six options.

How to choose a 4-star hotel in the Maldives

💡 In short:

  • Transfer is everything: a nearby atoll is served by speedboat, a distant one requires a seaplane or domestic flight.
  • All-inclusive covers meals and basic drinks; premium alcohol and the spa are usually extra.
  • Visa and entry: citizens of most countries get a free 30-day visa on arrival at Malé airport, verified 09/2026 on the Maldives immigration service website.

The resort arranges the transfer itself; you don't need to look for a carrier separately. Just send your flight details, and a hotel representative will meet you at the terminal exit. A speedboat takes a group and runs from fifteen minutes to an hour. Seaplanes fly only during daylight hours, so if you arrive late, you'll be offered a night in Malé.

The farther the atoll, the more expensive the flight and the less frequent the departures. Distant resorts win on seclusion and reef quality; nearby ones save time and money. If you're going for just four or five nights, pick an island near Malé: you won't lose two days of your vacation to travel.

Activities are scheduled by the hour: a gym and fitness trainer, darts, billiards, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, jet skiing, and beach volleyball. Fishing trips run in the morning and evening, and there's a dolphin excursion. Kids have animation and a separate program.

One of the country's oldest resorts and one of the most convenient in terms of logistics. The island lies seven kilometers from the airport and eight from Male, so the boat ride barely adds to your journey. It works well for both younger travelers and families: the infrastructure is built for different types of groups.

For kids there is a large pool with slides, a nanny, a playroom, and a playground. Adults can use the sauna, hammam, massage, yoga, and pilates. A dive center, two tennis courts, a gym, fishing, badminton, and volleyball round out the activities. The grounds have souvenir shops, stores, and bars, and a bicycle gives you a chance to ride around the whole island.

4. Meeru island resort & spa

A large resort in North Male Atoll that occupies an entire island with its own lagoon. A coral reef runs nearby, and at night stingrays and turtles come up to the shore. Accommodation varies: rooms in the main building with beach access or overwater villas with a jacuzzi.

The rooms are bright, with an airy canopy over the bed. Beach bungalows are more often chosen by families with kids: there is a playground, a play area, and a club nearby. The menu is varied, with plenty of seafood, meat, and fruit, and a snack bar is open between meals. On the all-inclusive plan, you get an excursion and small gifts. Available sports include snorkeling, diving, and windsurfing.

A resort in Baa Atoll for those who combine vacation and sports. There is a pool, outdoor and indoor tennis courts, a fitness center with an instructor, and a volleyball court. The dive center takes guests to the house reef, where sharks, barracudas, rays, and turtles can be seen.

In the evening, guests gather for ray and shark feeding. The cuisine is creative: every day dinner features dishes from different countries, sometimes with spicy local seasonings. The property has three beach bars and two by the pool, and the main bar has billiards and table tennis.

A secluded resort in the middle of the Indian Ocean with a wide white-sand beach. The main attraction is a multi-level pool built into the natural landscape. Guests stay in beach and water villas.

The all-inclusive menu is varied: meat and fish dishes, fresh fruit including guava, passion fruit, and raspberries. For an extra charge, the chef will prepare octopus and lobster. A resort in Ari Atoll for comfort and underwater experiences. The dive center takes you to a coral reef where harmless sharks, rays, colorful fish, and a large turtle live. You can grab a mask and see some of that right from the shore.

The kitchen is run by an Italian chef: pasta, lasagna, and ravioli sit alongside local dishes. Beef and pork are served every day, and tuna is grilled and made into carpaccio.
