Seaside vacation with kids: how to plan a stress-free trip
Planning a seaside vacation with kids? We cover the best season, choosing a location, packing, and a children's first…
Read more →Before a trip there are always questions that do not fit into a single guidebook. How do you get your money back for a canceled flight, do you need a permit for a popular trail, is it worth traveling to an unusual place for one shot? The answers are scattered across different websites, and finding them takes a lot of time. We have gathered them in the "For a note" section.
The first large group of articles is about specific places, most often in the US and Europe. These are natural sites and parks: Zion in Utah, Lake Tahoe, the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, the Soča Valley in Slovenia, Cap de Creus in Spain. Next to them are castles and man-made sites: Leeds Castle, Coral Castle in Homestead, Mount Rushmore, the moai of Easter Island. For each place we cover admission, how to get there, the right season and what has to be arranged in advance.
The second group deals with flights and transport: airline ticket refunds, compensation for a canceled flight, missing your plane, choosing transport in the US, renting an RV. The third group consists of roundups and comparisons, for example Mexico and Thailand by flight, visa and budget. The roundups cover small towns, ghost towns, volcanoes open to tourists, amusement parks, hotels on Phu Quoc and at Bang Tao, the churches and tours of Florence, the main sights of Edinburgh. Texts about risks stand apart: dangerous places that admit visitors only with a guide and a permit, and the swimming closure at Jacob's Well in Texas.
Every article opens with a short conclusion: what this place or rule is and who will find it useful. Then come the practical blocks: tickets, opening hours, getting there, permits and season. Each figure comes with its source and the date it was checked, and if the official source gives no exact answer, we say so. We name the downsides plainly: lines, closed sections, a difficult road, a high price.
The section suits those who have already chosen a destination and want to settle one practical question. It is also useful if you are looking for an unusual stop on a route through the US or Europe. There is no complete guide to a country or city here, and no detailed advice on visas and insurance either. If you need a day-by-day trip plan, start with a guide to the specific city and come back here for the details.
It is easiest to start with the topic that affects money and deadlines. These are the texts on ticket refunds, compensation and choosing transport, and they are best read before you buy. Then move on to the places that lie on your route and check what has to be arranged there in advance: a ticket, a pass or a permit. Read the roundups last: they help you add new stops to a finished plan.
"For a note" is part of "Types of travel", and the neighboring sections solve other tasks. For a trip theme, go to "Vacation ideas" and "Tourist ideas", for ways to cut costs to "Affordable vacation". Trails, rafting and hikes are covered in more detail in "Active recreation", parks and shows in "Entertainment", water parks in "Water parks". Look for short stories about places in "Interesting facts".
Airline rules, ticket prices and opening hours change. That is why we return to published articles and check them against the official websites of parks, museums, carriers and government agencies. The date of the last check is in the text, and it shows how fresh the data is. Be sure to verify visa conditions and permit requirements yourself with the official source before you travel.
The topics in this section vary: a text on passenger rights may sit next to a story about a castle in Colorado. We deliberately do not reduce them to one theme. They have one thing in common: after reading, you are left with a concrete action for your trip plan. Write it down, check the date in the source and move on to the next item of your preparation.
