Setubal and Troia in two days: market, fort and ferry to the beaches
⛱️ Setubal and the Troia Peninsula: a free fort with a panorama, a market with oysters, a 5.50 euro ferry and Atlantic…
Read more →Portugal is already chosen, and what remains are the practical decisions. You need to work out how many days to allow, which city to start in and how to link Lisbon, Porto and the coast into one route. A separate question is whether to add the islands or leave them for the next trip. You also have to decide what to buy in advance and what can easily be picked up on the spot. These are the tasks people bring to this section.
The core consists of articles on cities and regions. Lisbon and Porto are covered in the most detail: what to see, how to fit the city into one day, where to go on a day trip. Alongside them are Sintra with Pena Palace and Cabo da Roca, Évora, the Douro Valley, the Algarve with the Benagil Cave, and the Costa Vicentina coast. The islands are represented by Madeira and São Miguel. There are also pieces on a single sight, for example the Livraria Lello bookstore in Porto.
The second large group deals with accommodation and transport. In the roundups on where to stay, we compare the areas of Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and São Miguel and the resorts of Madeira, and we also give a general overview of the country. The transport articles answer questions about getting from the airports of Lisbon, Porto and Faro, about trains, car rental and the journey between Lisbon and Porto. This is the most hands-on part of the section.
The third group helps you choose when to go and work out your costs. We describe the seasons and the weather month by month for the country, Lisbon and Porto, and look separately at trips in spring, fall and winter. There are articles on the budget per day and for the whole trip, ready-made itineraries for ten days and two weeks, and texts on beaches, food and gifts. Events are covered too: the Festa da Flor flower festival in Madeira and the New Year fireworks in Funchal.
Every article opens with a short answer to the main question. Practical blocks follow: how to get there, what to buy in advance, how much time to allow, what restrictions apply. For prices and opening hours we state the source and the date it was checked. We write about the downsides plainly: lines, timed-entry tickets, bans, awkward connections. If the sources disagree, we say so.
The section is meant for those who plan their trip themselves and want to base decisions on facts. It suits a first trip along the classic route and a return visit, when the islands or the south out of season are the focus. If you are looking for a ready-made guided tour or travel sketches without a practical side, the section will give you little. We write reference guides, not travel stories.
A good place to start is the article on when to go to Portugal: it sets the frame for season and weather. Then pick an itinerary for ten days or two weeks and check it against the article on budget. After that, move on to accommodation in the cities that made it into your plan. Read about transport and tickets for individual sights last, closer to your travel dates. That way the reading order matches the order of decisions.
The section is part of "Europe", which belongs to "Destinations". It has no subsections, and all articles sit in a single list. If Portugal is one part of a longer route for you, look at the neighboring countries on the same level: "France", "Germany", "Belgium", "England", "Andorra". To compare it with other vacation options, "Bulgaria", "Denmark" and "Finland" will be useful.
We update the articles as things change. Ticket prices, timetables, visiting rules and border conditions are checked against the official websites of carriers, museums and government services. On entry and documents, we show what exactly to check and where to find the rules in force, but the final answer always comes from the official source. Before you travel, look at the check date in the article you need. If it is an old one, open the original source given there and verify the details yourself.
