Dates and opening hours for Christkindlesmarkt 2026

💡 In short:

  • The market runs from November 27 through December 24, 2026.
  • On opening day the stalls stay open until 10 pm, on all other days until 9 pm.
  • On December 24 the market closes at 2:00 pm.

The city of Nuremberg has confirmed the 2026 dates: the market starts on Friday, November 27, and ends on Thursday, December 24 (date confirmation for 2026, 09/2026). The hours follow the same pattern every year, so you can plan your trip well in advance.

On opening day the stalls are open from 10 am to 10 pm. After that the market is open daily from 10 am to 9 pm, and on December 24 only from 10 am to 2 pm (press release about the 2025 season, market schedule; as of 09/2026, verified on the official website).

Plan your visit for the evening: the lights on Hauptmarkt come on at dusk, and the market looks completely different than it does during the day. The stalls are open in the morning too, but there are noticeably fewer people. The busiest hours will be after 6:00 pm on weekends.

Where the market takes place: Hauptmarkt and nearby areas

The main Christkindlesmarkt site is Hauptmarkt in the old town. More than 160 wooden stalls with red-and-white roofs are set up here (according to the market organizers, 09/2026). You can walk from Hauptmarkt to the other areas.

Rathausplatz hosts the Markt der Partnerstädte: around 20 stalls with food and gifts from Nuremberg's sister cities (page for the Markt der Partnerstädte, 09/2026). Last season the participants included Ukraine, Romania, Czechia, China, France, Israel, Palestine, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.

Hans-Sachs-Platz is nearby, one block from Hauptmarkt. This square hosts Kinderweihnacht, the children's section of the market. The fourth location is Winterdorf with its Ferris wheel at Weißer Turm; check the current list of locations on the city Christmas market website.

What to eat and buy at the market

Your first lap around Hauptmarkt is for food. Nuremberg classics include mulled wine, Lebkuchen honey gingerbread, Nuremberg sausages, and fruit bread. The sausages are small, served in a bun, and mulled wine comes in souvenir mugs.

You can keep the mug or return it and get your deposit back. Cash is useful because some stalls don't accept cards. Food prices change every season, so check the amounts posted at the stalls themselves.

For gifts, walk along the Hauptmarkt stalls. They sell Zwetschgenmännle, little figures made from prunes, Christmas tree ornaments, wood carvings, handmade soap, spices, and tea. Nearby are stands with 1. FCN football club merchandise. Zwetschgenmännle are easy to take home: they don't break in a suitcase.

If you want to try food from other countries, head to Rathausplatz. At Markt der Partnerstädte they cook dishes from Nuremberg's sister cities, so you can compare them with German classics. Portions there are small, so order one dish at a time and share.

Program: the Christkind prologue and the Hauptmarkt stage

The market opening is the prologue. On the evening of November 27, 2026, the Christkind speaks from the gallery of Frauenkirche, starting at 5:30 PM (opening page, 09/2026). The ceremony is broadcast on television and radio, so arrive early: that evening Hauptmarkt sees the biggest crowd of the entire season.

The role of Christkind for 2025 and 2026 is played by Nora Falk, selected by a city jury (Christkind page, 09/2026). You can meet her on weekdays: on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday around 2:30 PM she visits Kinderweihnacht, then appears in front of Frauenkirche on Hauptmarkt. Check the official website for the exact visit schedule.

The Hauptmarkt stage operates every day. From December 1 at 5:40 PM it features Adventswort, a short Advent reflection, along with choir performances (market program, 09/2026). The stage program is announced day by day, so it's convenient to check it in the evening.

On opening night, shops in the city center stay open later than usual. You can pick up gifts between visiting stalls and avoid a last-day rush. If you'd like to tour the market with a guide and hear its history, there are themed Nuremberg tours on GetYourGuide.

Kinderweihnacht, Lichterzug, and mail coaches

Kinderweihnacht at Hans-Sachs-Platz is a separate area for families. Opening hours are the same: daily from 10 AM to 9 PM, and on December 24 from 10 AM to 2 PM (Kinderweihnacht, 09/2026). In previous years it also welcomed visitors after Christmas, through December 30.

Inside there's a multi-level carousel and a steam railway. Children can decorate a candle in the workshop, and at Nikolaushaus the Weihnachtsmann talks with them. For the youngest visitors there's Sternenhaus (children's page, 09/2026).

In December, the Lichterzug, a lantern procession for children, goes through the center. Dates and route are announced separately (Lichterzug, 09/2026).

Adults should take a ride on the postal carriage. Museum für Kommunikation organizes ten-minute rides, departing from 2 to 7 pm at Waaggasse opposite the IHK. Buy a ticket online or directly from the coachman (Postkutsche, 09/2026).

How to get to the market and where to leave your car

Parking in the old town is difficult. You can count on the Parkhäuser Hauptmarkt and Hans-Sachs-Platz, but on weekends they fill up by midday. It is easier to arrive by train: from Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof you walk to the market through the center.

Public transport runs on the usual schedule. Bus 36 goes to Hauptmarkt, and buses 37, 46 and 47 go to the Heilig-Geist-Spital stop. From the U-Bahn station Lorenzkirche you walk through the old town and see the lights along the way (directions, 09/2026).

Book train tickets to Nuremberg in advance: on Advent weekends trains fill up, and prices rise closer to the date (train schedules on Trip.com).

In practice, this means it is better to leave Friday evening and Saturday for the market, and come by car on a weekday. Then you will not spend an hour looking for a spot.

Where to stay in Nuremberg during the market

Hotels in the center for market dates get booked up in advance, so do not put off booking. Look for an option between Hauptmarkt and Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof: from there you can walk to the stalls and will not depend on evening buses. Streets around Lorenzkirche also work.

If you are going for the weekend, book the night from Friday to Saturday: on Saturday evening the market already draws more people, and a nearby hotel saves you the trip. You can look at options here: available hotels in Nuremberg on Trip.com.

Market entry is free, you only pay for food

There is no entry fee for the Christkindlesmarkt or the city squares. Kinderweihnacht, Markt der Partnerstädte and Winterdorf are also free (nuernberger-maerkte.de, 09/2026). Private Christmas markets near Nuremberg sometimes charge entry, but those are separate events.

Your expenses at the market are food, drinks, souvenirs and the mug deposit. Tickets for carousels, workshops and the postal carriage are bought on site. Take some cash: that way you do not depend on the card terminal at the stall.

In short: what to book

If you only have one evening, start with the Hauptmarkt, then move on to the Kinderweihnacht and Rathausplatz. If you have a weekend, spend the first day at the market and the second at the museums and the Winterdorf. With kids, pick a weekday evening: there are almost no lines for the carousel.

Book accommodation in the center in advance: see hotels in central Nuremberg on Trip.com. Train tickets are also easier to get ahead of time: train tickets to Nuremberg on Trip.com. Come at dusk on a weekday, and you will see the lights without the heaviest weekend crowds.
