Paphos was the capital of Cyprus during the Roman Empire, and a particularly large number of monuments survive here. Today it is one of the island's most scenic and well-kept resorts. It's near Paphos that Aphrodite's Bay lies: according to legend, the goddess of love emerged from the sea foam right here.

6. Protaras

Protaras is considered a young resort in a bay called Fig Tree Bay, next to Ayia Napa. The village grew up on a spot where, half a century ago, only fig trees grew. Protaras is separated from Ayia Napa by Cape Greco. The name of Fig Tree Bay beach comes from a fig tree that has been growing here since the 17th century (according to Visit Cyprus).

Clear aquamarine sea, white sand and picturesque rocks have made the place popular. Until recently it was quiet and secluded here, but now Protaras matches the island's well-established resorts in visitor numbers.

7. Pissouri

Not long ago, the site of Pissouri was just a pier with a lone taverna. Travelers who made their own way here appreciated the wide pebble beach and clean sea, and the place gradually turned into a resort. Shops, hotels and a bank appeared.

Pissouri Bay beach lies in the bay of the same name, sheltered from the wind by the massive Cape Aspro. You can swim along its entire length, but the center is more convenient: there are fewer stones and less seaweed. The least crowded part is on the right, where the rock meets the water. Locals come here on weekends.

8. Coral Bay

Coral Bay lies about six kilometers north of Paphos, in the municipality of Peyia (on the map). Travelers come here for the island's best beach. The crescent-shaped beach sits comfortably between limestone headlands.

If you're traveling with children, especially young ones, plan everything in advance. It's best not to schedule your trip for the hottest months, July and August. Choose 5-star hotels: they guarantee kids' facilities, pools, playgrounds, entertainment staff, and special menus in restaurants.

What to see in Cyprus
