Indian summer in New England: when to go and what to book in advance
Autumn colors in New England last only a couple of weeks. Predicting their peak in advance is nearly impossible, so the route is built from north to south and leaves room to maneuver. We put together the timing, a proven route, and budget benchmarks so your trip doesn't end in front of bare trees.
In 2026, foliage in Maine started turning around September 16, and the peak in northern areas fell on late September and the first week of October (as of 09/2026, New England peak map). Southern New England ripens through mid-October, so you can adjust the dates to fit your vacation.
Below you'll find when to go, which route to take, where to stay, and what it actually costs.

💡 In short:
- Start from Boston, Montreal, or New York, and book your car and lodging two to three months ahead.
- Move from north to south: Maine and northern Vermont turn first.
- Allow at least a week on the road, ideally two.
- Park status and entrance fees: 09/2026, verified on the National Park Service website.
The short warm spell in early fall is often called Indian summer. In North America, a similar period is known as Indian Summer: several warm, sunny weeks after which the foliage changes color. For your trip, what matters isn't the warm weather but the leaf color itself.
Foliage peak and its short window
Fall color (foliage) starts with maples, birches, and oaks, but the red, orange, and gold tones don't appear all at once. Region, elevation, and weather all play a role. The foliage peak lasts only a few days, so you're chasing a narrow window. Miss it by a week and instead of a fiery forest you'll see a brown grove.
Leaf peeping and fall foliage tourism
That's what trips for autumn colors are called in the US, and the travelers themselves are called leaf peepers. In New England, scenic drives, trails, and overlooks were built for them. You can drive along them and stop at every viewpoint. New England consists of six states.
Best airport to start from
Three airports cover nearly every trip scenario. The choice depends on the route and the car price, not just the ticket.
Airport | Who it suits | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
Boston (BOS) | Pure New England | Short drives, but flights and rentals cost more |
Montreal (YUL) | Starting with Canada | Often cheaper flights and cars, easy border crossing |
New York (JFK, EWR) | Many flights | Farther from New England, you have to drive through the city |
From Boston to Acadia National Park it's about 440 km (on the map), while from Montreal to Vermont it's only about 150 km. If you're flying from Europe, compare the total cost: ticket plus rental for the whole period. Sometimes Montreal works out cheaper than Boston, especially when you return the car in a different country. It's convenient to compare your dates and connections using the flight selection on Kiwi.com.
Car rental: what to plan ahead
Roads in New England are smooth and well marked, so you don't need all-wheel drive. Get a car that fits all your luggage. During foliage season, rentals get more expensive, and the cheap rates go first.

Compare rental companies and book a rate with free cancellation so you can rebook if the price drops.
Check one-way returns in a different city: rental companies charge a one-way fee.
Check the rental agreement for rules on crossing the border into Canada.
Return the car with a full tank, otherwise you will pay a high price for fuel.
Rental companies do not always allow you to return the car in a different country. Check cross-border returns with the rental company. You can compare options in this car rental selection.

Crossing the US-Canada border
If your route includes both countries, you need to arrange permits in advance. Without them, you will be turned away right at the checkpoint.

eTA for Canada costs 7 Canadian dollars and is required for entry by air (as of 09/2026, Government of Canada website).
Fruit, meat, and plants cannot be brought in without restrictions; check the rules in advance.
Small border crossings are not open around the clock, so allow extra time for the border.
It is best to cross the border in the morning before the line builds up.
When to go: peak foliage timing
Foliage moves from north to south and from higher elevations downward. Peak timing varies by state, and you can use that gap to your advantage.
Region | Peak foliage |
|---|---|
Northern Maine and Acadia National Park | late September - first week of October |
Vermont and New Hampshire | early to mid-October |
Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island | mid to late October |
Start in early October at Acadia and head toward the White Mountains and Vermont. That way you follow the peak rather than working against it and cover several regions at once (as of 09/2026, regional foliage forecast). If your vacation dates are fixed, choose the southern option and do not chase the north.
New England road trip route
The route works well as a loop. You start in the north, head south, and fly out of the same major city.

Acadia National Park opens the northern section. Entry costs $35 per vehicle and is valid for 7 days (as of 09/2026, National Park Service website). Acadia is one of 11 parks where foreign visitors pay an additional $100 per person. Driving up Cadillac Mountain requires a separate reservation for $6 per vehicle, valid from May 20 through October 25 (as of 09/2026, reservation page).

White mountains and the Kancamagus highway
From Acadia to the White Mountains is about 330 km (on the map). In New Hampshire, the route follows the Kancamagus Highway, a section of NH-112 between Lincoln and Conway. It is 34.5 miles long (as of 09/2026, White Mountains tourist office). The road runs through a national forest and is considered one of the best for fall foliage.
- The catch: there are no gas stations or cafes on the highway itself, so fill up and buy food in advance.

Vermont delivers the classic fall postcard. Stowe combines charming wooden houses and steep slopes, while Route 100 stretches along the Green Mountains. You drive through Smugglers' Notch on a narrow road between cliffs, which closes in winter. From the White Mountains to Stowe is about 140 km (on the map).

The Berkshires in western Massachusetts offer hills and old farms. Cape Cod stretches out into the ocean and is great for quiet days by the water. Both are worth adding to the end of the route, when the north has already faded.
How many days to plan for
Allow at least a week for the trip. Two weeks is enough to cover all of New England, and with three weeks the route becomes truly unhurried. Distances between stops here are shorter than on the US West Coast.

Accommodation: when and what to book
There is one rule: the earlier, the better. Stowe in Vermont, Lincoln and North Conway in New Hampshire get booked months in advance, and in October they are expensive.
Hotels are pricier, but usually include breakfast.
Motels are cheaper and simpler.
Guest houses (B&Bs) are cozier and more personal, but they get snapped up first.
If you find a nice guest house on its own website, booking directly is often cheaper. You can check hotels on Trip.com.
How much does the trip cost
Your budget depends heavily on your dates and how early you book. Here are rough benchmarks by expense category.
Flights: in fall, tickets from Europe cost more than summer charters, so start looking three to four months out.
Car rental: rates rise during foliage season, so book one with free cancellation.
Accommodation: in popular small towns, a night in October costs several times the national average.
Food: restaurants in the US are expensive, while supermarkets and fast food are noticeably cheaper.
Admission tickets: from a few dollars to significant amounts, and parks charge per vehicle.
Toll roads: there are few in New England, so keep a card or small bills handy.
Starting in 2026, foreign visitors to the 11 most visited US parks pay a surcharge of 100 dollars per person (as of 09/2026, overview of the new rules). Among the parks on this route, Acadia is on the list.
⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to see fall foliage in New England?
Northern Maine and higher-elevation Vermont peak in late September and early October. Central and southern states turn color from mid-October. This year the season has shifted slightly later than usual. If this is your first foliage trip, aim for the first half of October and keep a couple of extra days as a buffer.
How many days do I need for the route?
Plan for at least a week, which is enough for Maine and the coast. Two weeks cover all of New England.
Do I need a visa and what permits should I arrange?
For the US, the trip starts with ESTA at 40.27 dollars per person (as of 09/2026, CBP notice in the Federal Register). For entry to Canada by air, you need an eTA at 7 Canadian dollars. Both permits are completed online before departure. If your trip is US-only, Canadian documents are not required, but ESTA is always mandatory.
Can I tour New England without a car?
Without a car, the route falls apart, because the best roads and viewpoints are far from train stations. Trains connect major cities, but not mountain passes or national parks. If you do not want to drive yourself, stick to Boston and its surroundings, and book tours for anything farther.
When should I book the hotel and car?
Book the hotel and car two to three months before your trip. Popular small towns fill up earlier in October, and rental prices go up every week. Choose a rate with free cancellation and check the price every couple of weeks. That way you will not overpay and you will stay flexible.
In short: what to book
If you have two weeks and are starting from Montreal, take the Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire loop. If you are flying into Boston for a week, stick to Maine and the coast. For a short trip, choose the south and Cape Cod once the north has already faded.
Book the car and accommodation in advance, and buy tickets after you have settled on your direction. That way you will catch peak foliage in one of the states and will not end up without a room. You can check available hotels for your dates on Trip.com.
