Why Glühwein gets more expensive every year

Electricity at a market stall costs more than in a permanent shop. In Frankfurt am Main, vendors pay 43 cents per kilowatt-hour, and that is one reason for the high price (as of 11/2025, electricity costs).

Raw ingredients have risen by more than 45% over five years (as of 2025, expert interview). Fruit, spices, and baked goods have all become more expensive, and the second major cost item is the fee for a market stall.

At tourist venues, a stall costs several thousand euros, and that amount is immediately built into the price of the drink (as of: 2025, watson.de).

Staff also costs more. Working at a market means long shifts in the cold and a high volume of visitors, so pay has to be above the minimum rate. After the terrorist attacks of recent years, security costs have also risen.

The overall scale helps explain where these prices come from. According to Deutscher Schaustellerbund, there are about 3,250 Christmas markets in Germany, and in 2024 they were visited by roughly 170 million people. Average spending per guest reaches 24.50 € per day, and market turnover is estimated at 4.17 billion euros (as of: 2025, market report).

Christmas markets and city economies

Many German city centers are losing shoppers because of vacant storefronts and online retail. A Christmas market brings people back downtown and creates foot traffic around cafes, shops, and hotels.

Frank Hakelberg from Deutscher Schaustellerbund says that city centers are now full of the same chains, and individuality has largely been lost (as of: 2025, expert quote). The pandemic intensified the structural problems of city centers and accelerated this process.

The tourism business around the markets is growing too. Groups arrive in cities by bus, and the revenue goes to restaurants and retailers across entire regions.

Not every season repeats the record. In the 2025/26 season, fewer people visited the markets than the year before, especially in early December (according to tagesschau.de).

How to pay less: practical tips

Compare markets within the same city: in Berlin, the difference between locations is noticeable, so walk a couple of extra stops and find the same cup for less.

Go to a market in a small town, where mulled wine is cheaper than in the regional capital (as of: 11/2025, city comparison). A 20-30 minute trip will pay for itself by the second cup.

Factor in the deposit and return your cup if you are not building a collection.

Order the regular red mulled wine: special varieties and organic mulled wine cost noticeably more, and the difference in taste is not that big.

Come on a weekday evening, when lines are shorter and the festive atmosphere is the same.

Check the entrance fee, because several Berlin markets charge admission, and it can eat up all your savings.
