Luxury hotels sell predictability, not just a bed.

"Luxury" in a hotel name and "luxury" in a room name do not mean the same thing. A luxury hotel maintains a high standard in everything: dining, housekeeping, entertainment, guest transportation. A luxury room is simply a large room with expensive furniture.

Beyond the standard set, the guest is offered a personal concierge, a secretary, and a car with a driver. Some services are included in the rate, others the hotel bills separately. Check the list of inclusions before check-in.

Stars on the sign do not guarantee the same service in Dubai and in Bulgaria. It is an advisory standard, not a law. Each country decides for itself how to assign a category.

A common catalog of criteria did not exist for a long time. In Europe, the system was assembled in 2009; today 22 countries belong to Hotelstars Union, and the criteria are revised every five years (as of 09/2026, criteria catalog).

National designations change over time. Crowns in the UK, keys in Sweden, and letters in Greece are no longer used. Sweden belongs to Hotelstars Union, and hotels there are assigned stars.

Hotels with six and seven stars are a marketing move. The official scale ends at five stars, so Burj Al Arab in Dubai formally remains a five-star hotel. Rooms there cost more than the city average, and service is maintained at a high level.

On your second visit, you will be surprised that they remember you. It is not good memory but a guest database where preferences from every visit are recorded. Being addressed by name at the first meeting is considered the norm for a premium hotel.

A personal concierge handles almost any request. You need a helicopter to see the city from above, a private guide, or a table at a restaurant with a closed reservation list. You set the task, they find the solution.

In-room dining operates around the clock. You can order food at night. Food in the room is usually paid separately; it is not included in the rate.
