Spring in Hungary: tulip fields, Easter villages and festivals at Balaton

Hungary changes fast in spring. As early as April, tulip fields open near Lake Balaton, and the Easter festival kicks off in the village of Hollókő.

Many visitors only come to Budapest and miss the main event: the blooms, village celebrations, and wine festivals between the Danube Bend and Lake Balaton. The Easter festival in Hollókő draws guests from across the country for rituals and music (Visit Hungary events calendar).

Below are flower fields, Easter villages, festivals, and exhibitions with dates and official sources so you can build an itinerary around your travel dates.

When tulips and lavender bloom

💡 In short:

  • Tulips at TulipGarden bloom from April through the first days of May, lavender near Lake Balaton from mid-June.
  • Easter festivals in the villages run for four days in early April.
  • Bloom season and dates: 09/2026, verified on the Visit Hungary portal

Tulips open the spring season in Hungary. The TulipGarden network started in 2018 with a single field near Lake Balaton and now has 13 locations across the country (Hungary Today).

At each location you cut the flowers yourself and pay per bouquet. Picking dates depend on the weather, so check the page for your chosen garden before you go.

Lavender comes later. Kevélyhegyi Lavender Field near Budapest opens for you-pick in late May and June. Near Lake Balaton, the season is marked by the lavender festival on the Tihany Peninsula, which runs in the second half of June (levendulafesztival.hu).

Another spot on the southern shore, Kőröshegy Tulip and Lavender Park, combines tulip fields with a view of the lake. Nearby farms let you pick strawberries, currants, apples, pears, and raspberries.

Easter villages: Hollókő and Mezőkövesd

In Hungarian villages, Easter lasts several days, and throughout that time residents wear traditional costumes, sing folk songs, and treat guests to homemade food. The main celebration takes place in Hollókő, a UNESCO-listed village where Palóc traditions are preserved. In 2026 the festival runs from April 3 to 6 (festival program).

Folk music fills the streets, people dance in costumes and decorate eggs. Children and adults keep up the tradition of splashing each other with water, known here as locsolkodás. Tickets are sold only on site, by cash or card (official festival website).

Mezőkövesd focuses on Matyó culture. Bright embroidery and folklore shape the program presented over the Easter weekend. For you, it is a chance to see one of the country's most famous folk traditions.

Festivals at lake balaton and on the danube

The regional festival season starts in May. The festival in Nagymaros on the Danube Bend combines music with river views and begins in early May.

The spring culinary program is not limited to Lake Balaton. If you plan to stay overnight by the lake, hotel prices at Lake Balaton on Trip.com will help you compare options in advance.

A gastronomic spring

In Szentendre, the Taste of Transylvania festival introduces the cuisine of Transylvania. At Hungaricum Picnic, Egri Bikavér is served, one of Hungary's most famous wines from the Eger region. Restaurants pair local cuisine with regional wines.

Budapest: spring exhibitions

How to plan a spring trip

Spring arrives gradually in Hungary. With the first warm days, villages come alive, and the fields between the Danube Bend and Lake Balaton turn into colorful stages. Build your route around an event: first choose a festival or flower field, then accommodation nearby.

If you are traveling for the blooms, keep a backup date in reserve. The peak shifts by a week or two depending on the weather, so check venue pages before you leave: most pick-your-own gardens operate only during the season.

The largest crowds arrive for Easter, May 1 and Pentecost (Pünkösd). Hotels at Lake Balaton and in Budapest get booked up in advance, so reserve accommodation several weeks ahead. On weekdays, there are noticeably fewer people and cars.

A car is the most convenient way to travel between regions: flower fields, wineries and Palóc villages are located away from train stations. Without a car, choose Budapest as your base and plan day trips.

Arrive at the fields in the morning: fewer people and softer light. Check village program schedules by time so you can combine flower viewing and a festival on the same day.

Bring cash. At village markets and small gardens, card payment is not accepted everywhere, and there may be no ATMs nearby. A jacket and umbrella will come in handy even on a warm day.
