11 4-Star hotels in central Venice: where to stay near San Marco

11 4-Star hotels in central Venice: where to stay near San Marco

Venice is compact, but choosing a hotel in its center is harder than it seems. Between San Marco and Rialto there are dozens of four-star properties, and the difference between them is not in the stars, but in the distance to the pier, the view from the window, and the floor. There are no cars in the historic center, so you walk to the door with your suitcase or take a vaporetto.

We picked 11 four-star hotels in central Venice and listed for each the distance to St. Mark's Square, whether it has its own pier, and who it suits. Check prices for your dates: in high season, rates in the center change every week.

How to choose a four-star hotel in central Venice

Four stars in Venice guarantee neither space nor a canal view. Hotels here occupy 16th to 18th century palazzos, and rooms differ even within the same building. Look at three things: distance to the vaporetto stop, the floor, and the side the windows face.

💡 In short:

  • There are no cars in the historic center: from the vaporetto stop or the taxi stand at Piazzale Roma you walk with your luggage.
  • The city tax is 1-5 € per person per night and is charged for a maximum of 5 consecutive nights (as of 09/2026, Comune di Venezia rates).
  • The one-time entry fee for the center in 2026 applied for 60 days from April 3 to July 26 (verified on 14.09.2026 on the official Venezia Unica website).
  • Fees and entry conditions (as of 09/2026, official city website).

Distances in the table are shown on the map and help you compare hotels at a glance.

⁉️🤔 Frequently asked questions

How much does a 4-star hotel in central Venice cost?

The exact price depends on the season and dates: in high season, rates in the center are noticeably higher than in winter. A city tax of 1-5 € per person per night is added to the price, capped at 5 consecutive nights (as of 09/2026, city price list). Check the price for your dates on Trip.com.

Where to stay in Venice for the first time?

For a first trip, it's convenient to stay between St. Mark's and Rialto: the main attractions are nearby, and so is the vaporetto. If you want a Grand Canal view, look at Monaco & Grand Canal and Hotel Rialto. For a quieter stay, Hotel Colombina and Savoia & Jolanda are good options.

How to get from Santa Lucia station to a hotel in the center?

From Santa Lucia station to the center, you take a vaporetto along the Grand Canal. Lines 1 and 2 go to St. Mark's and Rialto, and the trip takes about half an hour. On bridges, you'll have to carry your suitcases up the steps, so a hotel near a pier saves you a lot of effort.

Do you have to pay to enter Venice in 2026?

A one-time entry fee for the historic center was in effect for 60 days from April 3 to July 26, 2026: 5 € with early payment and 10 € later, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM (verified 14.09.2026, project page). From July 27, 2026, the fee is no longer charged.

Which Venice hotels have their own pier?

Hotel Bonvecchiati, Splendid Venice, Hotel Don Palace, and Hotel Colombina have their own piers. This saves you effort when arriving and departing with heavy luggage. Savoia & Jolanda stands right next to a water bus stop. Albergo Cavalletto & Doge Orseolo has a pier with sightseeing gondolas nearby.
