Hainan lies in southern China, right at the tropic. EU citizens can enter visa-free for up to 30 days (as of 09/2026, Hainan government). This simplifies planning: you book flights, hotel, and itinerary yourself.
The flight from Europe takes almost a full day and almost always involves a layover. So the trip needs to be thought through in advance. First you choose a bay, then a hotel, then excursions.

How to get to Hainan

The island has three international airports. Sanya Phoenix (SYX) serves the southern resorts. Haikou Meilan (HAK) is in the north, near the provincial capital. The visa-free regime applies to tourism, business trips, and medical treatment (as of 09/2026, National Immigration Administration of China). Work and long-term study do not fall under it. You cannot leave Hainan province under this regime.
There is also a second option. Up to 240 hours visa-free is available when transiting through Haikou and Sanya airports (as of 09/2026, official Hainan portal). A circular railway takes you around the island. The train from Haikou to Sanya takes about 1.5 hours (as of 09/2026, TravelChinaGuide). It is cheaper and faster than flying.
Hainan resorts: which one to choose
The south of the island is occupied by the city of Sanya, which includes three bays: Yalong Bay, Dadonghai, and Sanya Bay. The sea here is warm all year round. Even in January the temperature stays above twenty-five degrees. The choice comes down to budget and atmosphere.

Yalong Bay
Yalong Bay is considered the most upscale bay on the island. Large resort complexes stand here, and the beach stretches for seven kilometers along the shore. Bars, restaurants, and shopping centers operate nearby.

Dadonghai
Dadonghai lies between two mountains in a green zone. The bay is considered the liveliest spot on the coast. There are hundreds of bars and nightclubs here, and seafood restaurants are open. The promenade does not sleep at night, so book a hotel deeper in the blocks if you need quiet.

Sanya Bay works well for a budget trip. Prices are lower, there are fewer people, and the infrastructure is developed. Cafes and restaurants serving every cuisine operate near the hotels. The resort began to be developed recently, so some corners still look wild.

Sanya hosts premium hotels. Tropical forests here come right up to the white beaches. Away from the center, it is easy to find peace and quiet. The city is growing fast and remains the island's main resort for international visitors.

Mid-range hotels offer a similar set of services. The rate includes a pool and internet, and often a buffet breakfast with limited hours. Many have their own green grounds and beach access.

Hainan beaches: where to swim
The island's southern beaches are gently sloping, with clear water. Below are three spots most often recommended to visitors. You can swim all year round.
Yalong Bay
Yalong Bay is often singled out as the best beach on the coast. The strip is equipped with loungers and mats. Part of the entrance to the area is paid. Go in the morning: by midday the water's edge gets crowded.

Xidao Island is a favorite for active vacationers. Weak currents and a rich underwater world attract divers. Hang gliding, water skiing, and jet skis are available here. Nature protection rules are strict. Only bicycles and electric trams take you around the island.

Dadonghai beach is short and shaded. The strip stretches for about two kilometers, with white sand and palm trees at the water's edge. The trees provide relief from the sun at midday. Diving and surfing schools operate nearby.

Monkey Island
Monkey Island lies near Sanya. More than two thousand Guangxi macaques live here. A cable car takes you up to the viewing platforms. Make a separate stop at the circus, where monkeys play the lead roles. Bring water with you, shade on the island is scarce.

Where to go on Hainan
Evenings on the island can be filled with theater, spa, or hot springs. All three options operate year-round.
Theaters
The island has an opera theater and several puppet theaters. The opera theater is considered the oldest. The Qiongshan Gongzi Theater stages performances in the style of Qiong opera. At the Lingao Theater, actors and puppets perform together: two characters share one role.
SPA programs
Spa treatments on Hainan are distinctive but effective. Salons offer body wraps, whitening, and dozens of massage types. The menu includes aromatherapy massage, hot stone massage, and the local "Tui Na". Book in advance: evening slots get taken quickly.
Thermal springs
Thermal springs are found in almost every corner of the island. They are located in tropical forests, in the mountains, and along the coast. The chemical composition and water temperature vary, so they affect the body differently. Check bathhouse schedules on site.
Food on Hainan
The island has cuisines from all over China: Beijing, Sichuan, and local Hainanese. The latter is built around seafood. The region's signature dish is hele crab, large and meaty. It is boiled and served with garlic sauce.
For meat, try Wenchang chicken. It is prepared according to a local recipe and served with a sauce of pepper, herbs, and peanuts. Shrimp, squid, and fresh fish are also popular.

The cost of a vacation on the island suits different budgets. Below are rough figures to plan around. Exact amounts depend on the season and the resort.
For a budget trip, renting a studio away from the beachfront works well. If you are traveling with three or more people, this kind of accommodation is cheaper than a hotel. Plan ahead: a couple of months out, there is more choice and lower prices. A double room farther from the sea usually includes cleaning and breakfast.
Street food is noticeably cheaper than restaurants. Fast food and noodles cost a few euros per portion, and bottled water is the cheapest option.
